"you won't even guess, so disappointing." the lilt in the god's voice is pronounced as he appears before the general's eyes. legs are crossed in mid-air as he stares at the general mahamatra through sunglasses-covered eyes.

such a world normally HAS no sunglasses to speak of, but hermes cares little for what the rules of each world and domain are. his eyes, per his own rules, are to be covered when in the company of mortals until they guess for sure who he is.

"i would ask if you're normally this serious all the time, but as i'm somewhat related to the spirit inside you, i already know of you to some extent. namely, i am very well aware of how rigid you are." he lets out a dramatic sigh, before reaching up to idly play with his helmet, still taking in cyno's appearance. his own helmet, the clothes he's wearing ― which, hermes is guessing are ceremonial in some nature. he's not entirely familiar with all the customs of this particular world.

"one simply can't go without meeting the great general mahamatra at least once, am i right?"

Dear Mortal,

Ah, sweet child of fleeting mortality, let the words of Aphrodite weave through your consciousness like a gentle breeze on a summer's eve. Listen closely, for my advice is both a gift and a warning.

In a world where beauty is revered, recognize the allure that dances within your being. Do not let it wither in the shadows, for to neglect your own radiance is to defy the very essence of existence. Vanity is not a sin but a celebration of the divine craftsmanship that molded your form.

Yet, beware, for my heart harbors a flame that flickers with jealousy and vindictiveness. Neglect not the beauty around you, for arrogance blinds and invites the wrath of a goddess scorned. Acknowledge the splendor in others, and in doing so, you pay homage to the intricate tapestry of creation.

In matters of love, tread lightly, for the heart is a delicate vessel. Be witty in your pursuits, employing the charm and cunning bestowed upon you by the gods. Do not be blind to the affections bestowed upon you, for the arrows of Eros are capricious, and love, a tempestuous sea.

Remember, beauty is both a gift and a responsibility. Carry it with grace, and let not the shadows of envy cloud your path. In recognizing the divine within yourself and others, you shall navigate the tumultuous seas of existence with the wisdom befitting a mortal touched by the hand of a goddess.

❝  excuse  me  —  ?  ❞   the  eyes  gazing  back  at  him  are  akin  to  twin  shards  of  quartz.  captivating,  eerie  and  devoid  of  any  imperfections.  utterly  impenetrable.  he  takes  a  step  back  —  compelled  by  an  instinct  that  feels  woven  through  every  fiber  of  his  being.  the  fear  that  grips  all  living  things  (  big  or  small,  human  or  otherwise  )  whilst  in  the  presence  of  something  occupying  a  far  loftier  position  on  the  proverbial  food  chain.  flight  without  fight  —  for  there  is  no  chance  of  the  latter  succeeding  when  one  stands  face  to  face  with  a  true  god.

yet  sunday  is  a  thinking  creature,  and  one  who  has  both  venerated  and  manipulated  the  divine  at  differing  points  throughout  his  life.  in  a  way,  it  has  left  him  uniquely  suited  for  this  conversation.   ❝  ...  ❞  he  inhales  deeply  and  smooths  out  the  fearful  arch  of  his  shoulders.  he  crushes  down  that  traitorous  prey  animal  instinct  like  smoothing  an  errant  wrinkle  from  a  tablecloth.  then,  exhaling  slowly,   ❝  you're  a  divine  messenger.  ❞  the  halovian  says,  voice  free  of  any  doubt.  ❝  a  god.  ❞  although,  presumably  not  of  the  pantheon  he  finds  himself  most  familiar  with.  such  an  interesting  guest  he's  been  tasked  with  entertaining.  in  any  case,  the  stranger  isn't  being  especially  subtle  about  his  identity  —  and  there's  some  comfort  to  be  found  in  that  peculiar  bluntness.  he's  laying  his  cards  on  the  proverbial  table  quite  readily;  it  saves  sunday  the  anxiety  of  not  knowing  precisely  what  (  or  rather,  who  )  he's  dealing  with.  ❝  although,  judging  from  the  way  you've  been  acting,  i  presume  you're  here  not  to  deliver  a  message ...  but  rather,  to  satisfy  your  own  curiosity.  if  that  is  the  case,  i'm  flattered.  ❞

honeyed  eyes  follow  the  strange  deity  as  he  flits  about.  the  halovian  patiently  listens  to  him  speak,  countenance  schooled  into  a  polite  yet  impenetrable  facade  of  neutrality.  though  his  guest  maintains  a  playful  exterior,  there  is  a  sharp  intellect  that  simmers  just  beneath  the  surface;  the  distinction  between  humble  fool  and  magnificent  trickster.  ❝  the  conviction  you  hold  in  your  perspective  is  commendable.  ❞  sunday  says,  as  the  god  settles  before  him.  it  sounds  more  like  a  backhanded  compliment  than  intended  —  although  the  only  one  he  directs  any  criticism  towards  is  himself.  he  would  like  to  believe  in  the  inherent  strength  of  his  fellow  man  —  that  people  can  change,  grow,  better  themselves  through  sheer  force  of  will  alone.  yet  even  now,  seeds  of  doubt  still  fester  within  him.   ❝  ...  i  would  even  call  it  enviable.  however ...  ❞

there's  a  pause.  perhaps  it  may  be  greedy  of  him  to  pose  another  question  so  soon  after  the  first  —  but  he  would  rather  ask  for  forgiveness  than  permission  when  the  thought  burns  in  his  mind  like  a  shard  of  hot  iron.  if  he  can  see  the  merit  in  their  dreams.  if  he  looks  tenderly  upon  those  who  reach  so  desperately  towards  the  sky.  ❝  if  a  god  who  cares  for  humans  unconditionally  truly  does  exist,  ❞  his  throat  feels  tight  with  some  emotion  he  cannot  place,  ❝  why  do  people  continue  to  suffer  —  ?  ❞

A GOD ― comes sunday's reply. the exclamation would be comical if sunday also didn't look perturbed at the same time. it's not hermes' intention to SCARE the mortals he comes in contact with, though it seems to happen regardless.

"in the flesh," he responds, giving the halovian a grand sweeping bow. he can already imagine the chants of irony, but hermes is polite almost to a fault ― it would be rather undignified of him to return genuine awe with mocking. even if said mocking was on the playful side. when the messenger straightens back up, his own expression is carefully schooled into something more sincere, the 'trickster' side of himself fading into the background.

"even the gods have curiosity that needs to be sated." his own tone is deepening, showing that he is taking all of sunday's questions and concerns very seriously. mostly. "i for one am never content to sit still lording above all. there are so many other things i'd rather do. conversing with fellow intellects, for one." he does pause for a moment, tilting his head ever so slightly to the side. "though, i'm not one of your aeons that humans of today are familiar with. i'm FAR more ancient than that."

it's a quick throwaway, a small clarification that should probably have been addressed first, but it's also a minute detail that needs no further explanation.

"you have concerns." he holds his arms behind his back, lacing his fingers together in a stoic position. tilting his face downward, the sunglasses slide back down, though hermes makes no move to correct them. "you see humanity in its current form and decide they're suffering. while that's true, i fear we have different viewpoints."

of course, it's TRUE that people do suffer tragedies to an extent. with humans and even other races having taken over the cosmos, there's bound to be a fair amount of strife and trauma. it's never been hermes' place to directly interfere with ANY of it though. not that he can't directly intervene ― he could if he felt so inclined. but with the rise of aeons and such pantheons, his own pantheon (and numerous others) has been reduced to near forgotten, and even mythical entities; no one prays to them anymore.

"i view life as a road, of sorts." he floats up in the air, crossing his legs and relaxing his posture. "one must always travel in order to reach their destination. doesn't matter what kind of travel that is. from what little i've learned about you, you made a long journey in order to reach your goal of commandeering penacony, correct?" there's a faint smile offered, a small signal for sunday to correct him if he's mistaken. hermes most likely IS, he can't be all knowing. that's the king of the skies, though most of the other gods have long been dormant. "roads are not always paved to be smooth and steady. there are going to be bumps and potholes, and broken edges. there's going to be trials and hardships for those who are traveling the road of life. but the destination. the end of your trip. that is the ultimate goal. it's not the gods place to interfere with that sort of travel."

he pauses for a few moments, allowing his words to sink in. during the few moments of silence, he summons his caduceus and idly plays around with it, balancing it on his fingertip, letting it hover in front of his face. though the whole time, he's watching sunday carefully.

"you wouldn't cage a wild hawk and expect it to thrive. as much as i'd like to protect all mortals and keep them from harm, sometimes the best protection i ―and other gods― can offer, is to let people travel how they please. they always find their way in the end."

it's almost HEARTBREAKING to admit that. it's not his intention to scold sunday, either. more, hermes is talking about his own viewpoint on everything that had happened for eons and eons. advancements, empires rising and falling, and entire planets and civilizations being abandoned until the universe is the form it is today ― hermes had little choice but to watch it all happen from the sidelines. he'd have loved to collect so many souls and deliver them to where they were meant to go. unfortunately, every pantheon's version of the underworld had emptied in favor of the aeons and new cultures of life passing.

this conversation is certainly giving him plenty to contemplate, too.

THIS IS DELICIOUS ― not very many people engage him in discussion such as this! it's all too enticing, which is why hermes is gently landing on the ground. he's not quite as tall as sunday is, though there's still a fair amount of height to him. brown, curly hair is poking out from 'neath his helmet, and the sunglasses are pulled off to reveal bright, pure white eyes. the grin on his face grows even wider. "what are manners?" he teases.

the truth of the matter is that hermes is just as drawn to this strange being as much as people are drawn to him. his own curiosity is driven and charged by how mysterious sunday always appears to be. he's somwhere in between mortal and divine, and hermes can't quite figure out what that exactly means. even if he never figures it out, he's certain that their conversation will be enlightening to some degree. hopefully, more conversations could occur in the future, as well.

"dreams are a vehicle, hmm?" sunday's answer is fairly satisfactory. this does fall in line with what people tend to venerate hermes for; being the god of messages and prophetic dreams. while he's far from the only god who DEALS with dreams, simply put, hermes is here now, and the others of his pantheon aren't.

"i think i like the way you think," he continues. lifting himself into the air again, though hovering mere inches off the ground, hermes moves around sunday to study him better. the halovian is interesting. more interesting than just moments ago ― BEFORE he'd spoken. but it seems as though his own desires can align with what hermes holds dear; there's no reason not to like the man. "there are ancient gods who send dreams to humanity, and there are gods who deliver those dreams as messages. it's up to you to figure out which is which, and who you might venerate." of course, this is OPTIONAL. hermes doesn't require people to worship or venerate him. though it's a bonus if they do. "i think i'd like to believe that messages in the form of dreams are more important than anyone realizes. those messages have the ability to change one's way of life, should they follow their dreams." OH, he does enjoy puns from time to time. let no one say the gods don't have a sense of humor.

"as for your question to me." he's not sure how else to explain his own complex thoughts on the matter to sunday. even for ancient gods such as himself, there are matters too complex to dive into with others. be it deities from other pantheons, or newer ones, it doesn't matter. hermes feels as though he stands out even among his own ― he can't even understand his own thoughts and emotions half the time.

it's probably why he's seeking out sunday in the first place. sunday is a very complex being, with way too much on his plate. he also has family that cares deeply about him, something ELSE hermes can relate to. yes, he hopes the two of them get along fairly decently from this point on.

"i cannot speak for every other ―what most mortals would call cosmic entities― but i can speak for myself." he lowers himself to the ground again, expression turning more serious as he remains in front of sunday. "there are those of us who DO care for humanity. not all of us. but myself specifically, i feel as though humans and other mortals have the capacity to learn and grow and better themselves. why not protect them? they all have their own dreams and goals, do they not?"

i have spent the past few days doing whatever research i could get my hands on. watching videos, even looking for books i can read, in order to learn more about hermes and how he still plays an impact in the world today. because BOY there is a lot.

i now have a better idea on how i want to write him and how i can combine the epic version of hermes, where he only plays a tiny role in the grand scheme of things, with the more classical version of him, where his role is far bigger and more impactful than most people even realize.

hermes is not JUST a messenger god. he is also the god of travelers, athletes, thieves and deceit, as well as a psychopomp ― he is one of the gods that conducts souls to the underworld.

i would argue that hermes has one of the most important roles, being that he's so incredibly versatile. it's not just that he's treated as myth, but a lot of what made hermes, hermes, is the fact that he extended far beyond just being a mere greek god.
