Announcing Bike Races is Fun!
My good friend Marky and I did some announcing at a the Diablo Twilight Criterium in Menasha last weekend. Man, what a blast. We did this last year as well, and were surprised to get quite a few compliments. We've known each other for a long time, so we have a good rapport, but we tend to assume we're simply entertaining ourselves since there are not too many people watching (c'mon, it's cycling...), and many of them are drinking beer and conversing amongst themselves. But like last year, and again to our surprise, we received a lot of compliments.Â
People liked our music (thanks, Spotify - really, we barely had anything to do with that); they liked our banter, and our jokes (we teased the masters racers because, well, they're old, we played Whitesnake's Here I Go Again during a solo break, we made up nicknames for some particularly fast juniors who cleaned up all day long, etc.); and people seemed to appreciate our excitability and enthusiasm for the sport (we were so juiced on caffeine by 10am, neither of us could stop dancing on stage.) Basically we were just trying to make each other laugh.
We were even invited to announce the State Crit championships in July, but unfortunately, I can't make it. I too am an aged masters racer ("retired"), and I got what I like to refer to as, "baggage." Wife, kids, the whole nine. Except of course, for the "jobby-type-job" part. The kiddo's birthday is that same weekend, so, I'm out.Â
Marky has taken the gig, and I will be ably replaced by another good friend of ours who is probably much funnier than we are. Hopefully he's not so good I don't get asked to do any more of this sort of thing. It is too much fun!Â
