In an impatient age of the quick fix and ephemeral culture, it is refreshing to see a long term project with real depth being realised. For over 3 years Japanese artist Ikeda Manabu put his heart and soul into this surreal triptych, a catharsis following on from the Tsunami of 2011. No wonder he cried when it was finished!

Grimes is a musical genius.

Her third album Visions, is one of my favourite albums ever. I must have listened to it thousands of times and it never gets boring.

Astronomers are gearing up to listen for evidence of aliens from a mysterious interstellar object

Is E.T. about to phone home?

Aliens are out there for sure, but Oumuamua  probably isn’t them.

This is really exciting, an interstellar object swinging by to say hi. But it doesn’t really add up to me. This object has come from deep space, something we really know very little about. Up until the 1920s, astronomers still thought that everything in the night sky was in The Milky Way.

I think the shape of the object is interesting and definitely the likely shape and size of an interstellar space craft. But a few things make me wonder. Why did it take such a trajectory? Going so close to our Sun? If it was aliens I doubt they would need to utilise the gravity of the Sun, if they can travel interstellar then surely their tech doesn’t need such basic aids? But maybe it’s a coach load of alien space tourists, gawping out the windows at planet Earth (their pocket binoculars will be strong enough to see you brushing your teeth from Mercury). Perhaps there’s an Universal alien treaty to not interfere with humans until our pathetic monkey brains are ready and these guys just came for a little look.

But on the other hand it is a strange shape for an asteroid. Although we simply don’t know enough about what’s out there. Maybe it’s made from an element we haven’t encountered before. Or it could just be the remnant of some kind of collision in space. A big chunk of asteroid, broken away from something larger.

Whatever it is it will soon be gone and we may never know, but as our abilities to detect objects in space improves expect a lot more stories like this. And this is the truly exciting part of this news.
