Pleased to report that after a day of this i am not longer craving caper brine and my mouth is not dry as usual. There's some good suggestions in the notes too that I want to try.

So while SecUnit is rebuilding itself after the catastrophic shutdown, it has this exchange with Gurathin:

"I don't want to be a pet robot."

"I don't think anyone wants that."

After which, we get this sequence of events:

Arada offers it a job. Gurathin says she should pay it with hard currency cards, which can be used anywhere it travels to. (We learn later that Preservation citizens use a complicated bartering system, so Arada might not have considered hard currency otherwise.) Then Pin-Lee comes in, gives SecUnit some hard currency cards just to have, as well as fake IDs that Gurathin specifically made for it, and tells it that it's not a pet.

Up until the "pet robot" exchange, SecUnit has said two things: "Fine" and a canned buffer phrase about searching for information. The first full sentence it says is "I don't want to be a pet robot." Gurathin holds his shit together until he’s with Pin-Lee (maybe others, but definitely her), and then immediately crashes out hard enough that the two decide to make sure SecUnit has enough hard currency cards and fake IDs to stay on the run forever if it'll make it feel slightly less like a pet robot.

This goes beyond down to clown. They're the whole damn circus at this point.

I also want to point out that when Pin-Lee says it's illegal, they're back in Preservation space at this point, so they're actually breaking the laws of their own polity by doing things like providing it with fake IDs. They could get in real trouble for that.

not just like. Trouble the way any citizen would get in trouble. Trouble as in "this will destroy our government if it gets out."

Pin-Lee is The Expert on contract law. She is The Lawyer for anything to do with the Corporation Rim. She is the Person To Call if something is Politically Fucked. She's the one who forces the Company to uphold its bond, she's well-known as someone who will fight the Corporation Rim on things, she is - to borrow a phrase - the Combat SecUnit of lawyers. She is close to most of Preaervation's administrators. She is implied to be the one responsible for making sure their interplanetary trade agreements are up to snuff.

So if word gets out that she's willing to play fast and loose with the law, what do you think is going to happen to Mensah? How much leverage will she have to enforce contracts when she's known to be dirty? How can she be trusted to write contracts when she's willing to aid and abet a construct's identity theft?

If she gets caught, jail time is the absolute least of her worries. In a society like Preservation, which values trustworthiness and justice, this is the kind of action that will cause mass protests at minimum. There's more at stake than Pin-Lee getting jail time here, and she knows it, even if Murderbot hasn't spent enough time there to realize.

Gurathin and Pin-Lee decided they were okay with that possibility. And they aided and abetted identity theft for someone not considered fully sentient under their own laws. They probably kept it from everyone else, to give them what protection they could.

They're so far beyond ride or die there are no words for it. They're at "destroy our people's belief in government" levels of commitment.

i love it actually when nonnative speakers make mistakes that reveal how their native languages work.

lots of koreans online say they "eat" drinks which would assume they only have one word which covers the concept of consumption.

arabic immigrants in sweden (my mother included) have a hard time differentiating between "i think/i believe/my opinion is" which suggests that in arabic these different modalities of speaker agency is treated as one or at least interchangeable.

swedish speakers in english will use should/shall/have to/must with much higher nuance precision than native english speakers, to the point where they sound well awkward, because the distinction between these commands in swedish is much clearer than in english. i make mistakes between is/am/are and has/have constantly because swedish only has one pronoun covering all grammatical persons.

i've heard speakers of languages without gendered pronouns (finnish, the chinese dialects, and a tonne more) make he/she mistakes because it's hard(!!) to learn two or more gendered pronouns and when to use them correctly.

how neat is that?! it add a charm to international english usage in particular and make our appreciation of both our native languages and our learnt ones stronger...!!

i love this! one thing i notice with a lot of people (native speakers of polish, romanian, french and others) is no differentiation between present simple (i go) and present continuous (I am going), because those languages only have one present tense to cover both. it's so lovely every time i hear it

i always think one of the most fun things about learning languages is that it teaches you how weird your own is! especially english phrasal verbs (the very different meanings of stand up, stand down, stand off, stand up to), or trying to explain the difference between being up to something and being up for something to my french friend. I love it!

another tag reminded me of how spanish speakers often mix up /v/ and /b/ because in panish they pronounced identically!

I wish more people had the ability to become bilingual because you're right, it makes you understand your own language at a more intimate and analytical level!!

People whose native language is heavily gendered often apply gendered pronouns to English words that don't have them. For example, my Brazilian sports coach referred to my knee as "she" instead of "it". It's even more interesting when you realise that Old English did have gendered nouns, much like German, and we've essentially lost that entire element of our language.
