He doesn’t know what had happened or how he got here – but he instantly knows where HERE is. And a look at the only person in the room’s face also confirms his suspicion, leading to a growing feeling of unease. HOW? The last thing he remembered was following Osgood through HQ, because she had wanted him to have a look at something a team had picked up in the Lake District, that looked similar to something mentioned in a file signed by him some thirty-odd years ago. But…
“Yes, you do.” His answer pressed out between his teeth; partially because everything in him just didn’t want to be here with HIM, partially because his whole body still seemed somewhat unstable and the odd feeling in his stomach reminded him of what it felt like to be back on the ground, after spending some time in free fall.
Resisting the urge to hold onto something to stabilise himself, his gaze remained fixed on the familiar face of the Doctor. The very first face he had ever met when he had been just a soldier in his mid 30s. “ – I don’t think you will actually remember… What you could do instead is tell me HOW DID I GET HERE?”
" do i? " he rises to his feet, raising himself upwards with his trusty umbrella. he's slow to walk over, deliberate steps taking him a while. his melancholy mood, well, that might cause him to try and infuriate to amuse himself. it'll take him out of that mood, certainly. " ah, yes, you were... UNIT? the dastardly plot by morrrgaine. " he notices the tension in him, the gritted teeth, and smiles. " you don't seem pleased to see me. "
" yes, that's an excellent question. how did you get here? some sort of plot? " he considers it for a second and shakes his head, " no, why would you be used for that? i'm sure there's other UNIT grunts that could be more palatable. "
he sighs, putting his free hand in his pocket and rummaging through it all. " yes, yes, i can see you're anxious to leave the wonders of the universe to me and get back to your humble roots. let us see if we can't figure that out, hm? you haven't been dosing on huon particles lately, have you? that's very dangerous. "

simply thinking about eight's final words before regenerating, they're just so perfect, man.

for a moment, fionn looks like he might protest. aliens aren't real, he was going to say, or this isn't star trek, or what do you mean you live in a spaceship? but he takes a breath, looking down at his absolutely ruined PPE, designed to withstand fire, thinks about watching people — people he knew, people he shared meals with, trusted, liked — turning to ash in a way that is abnormal, and he swallows down any of those words. instead, he laughs briefly, incredulous and shaken. ❝ yeah, okay, we're in a fire-proof time and spaceship, why the fuck not? ❞ it is, it turns out, probably not the weirdest thing he's experienced today.
his jacket is more hindrance than help, now; fionn takes it off, which will at least give him more manoeuvrability, and then realises that it's probably rude to dump ruined clothing in someone's spaceship, leaving him holding it awkwardly.
❝ i don't know anything about, uh, fire aliens. apparently what i know about fire wasn't any help, either. ❞ what's the use of a firefighter who can't fight fire? he's not good at anything else, not really. but the doctor...the doctor is doing a very good job of pretending he knows what he's talking about, if he isn't actually an expert. and fionn does want to help. people are dead. he's not okay with that. ❝ but, yeah, i-i'll do my best. i'm fionn, i don't know if i said that. ❞
" good man, that's a good attitude. " he refrains from bragging about how it's everything proof, he doesn't need to hear that right now. he may have overestimated how much he's following along but he'll have to do, won't he? he always does better with help. he hops over to the console, turning the monitor around to look at it. " pyroviles, pyroviles, what are they weak to? fire, fire, fire... " he stares at the blank screen, his thoughts rattling around in his brain at a mile-a-minute. " oh, doctor, you are very stupid today, aren't you? " he mutters to himself, a self-assured grin spreading across his face.
somewhat abruptly, he snaps the monitor away and rushes back to him. " you're alive still, aren't you? that's something to be grateful for. " the only one alive, possibly. not something that he wants to let him dwell on. " fionn, that's a lovely name, beautiful name. " he grasps his shoulders for a moment, " you know about fire, i know about aliens. that's a killer combo, don't you think? " he finds himself laughing for a moment, " what do you think their weakness is? big, rock-fire aliens? water. lots of water. " he lets go of his shoulders, " preferably cold, mind you. freezing water! it'd snuff them out, make them frigid. they can't survive without their fire. " he, somewhat awkwardly, clears his throat, " i'm pretty confident about that. we get some cold, cold water and we throw it on them and that's it! invasion stopped, london isn't in any danger of becoming pyrovilia beta and we can have a chat, fionn. sound good? "
just watched some episodes of capaldi's era w/ some friends and god, i miss THAT show
in a weird way it does feel good to have a sense of finality to that run. i dunno if i've ever disliked my favourite show so much but that does allow me to try and think about how i want to write fifteen as a character now that it's done.
i've been thinking about how m.offat brought gallifrey back in the 50th anniversary and i know this will be a controversial take but i think i want to make gallifrey still being around (and the time lords being alive) my official canon.
tbc, i like nine's arc in series 1 as much as anyone (great stuff) but as somebody who loves classic who i think having the time lords around & kicking offers a lot more interesting stories than them being dead does tbh, especially considering they'd already done the angsty sole-survivor thing for almost a decade.
i've always preferred the time lords to be this living counter to the doctor, a reminder of why he's an outsider, why they've never truly fit in. as opposed to nu who's sanitisation of them as this wonderful society that so often gets referenced.
(fair play to the m.offat years, he does present time lord society as a bit more reprehensible but still not to the levels of like deadly assassin or trial of a time lord)
Doctor Who The Lodger | 5.11
needless to say, i think i'll ignore the, uh, the billie piper doctor thing lmao. n.cuti will be the incumbent doctor on my blog for the foreseeable future
n.cuti will always be one of the greatest missed opportunities this show has ever had, man. i think i'll try and do something with fifteen because it really does suck what he was given
very ironically the show being put on hiatus makes me more excited to write here than i've been in ages
ah, well, the show is cancelled again
