Fuck it was AI nm. Gross. I hate it here.
@unitlead asked: You're shaking. Here, take my jacket. - for Mel ?
The voice grabbed her attention, sat on the low wall as she tried to wrap her head around everything that had happened.
“Oh-” The jacket is warm, like it’s just been taken off and Mel isn’t going to refuse it. The breeze is cold…and she’s left in the aftermath of whatever the hell it was that had happened here.
If she is going to be honest, Mel doesn’t understand what has happened. She had just been in the park and all hell had broken loose. It sounded odd to her, to say that she had been in the right place at the right time, but for the people who had been hurt that was very much the case - for her, it was a nightmare.
Strange, Mel wasn't entirely unaccustomed to such events, she just usually was an active participant in the aftermath rather than the actual incident itself. Now the place is crawling with people in uniforms and…they’re not ones she recognizes entirely. There’s just enough context for Mel to figure out they are military? Or something military adjacent?
“Do you know what that….thing was?” She asks, bypassing just about all pleasantries but she figures they are something she’s not good at so shes not going to try under these circumstances. “One of the patients said it was….dinosaur like? Maybe they had a head injury…”
❝ Yes, something like that ... ❞ A noncommittal nod accompanied those words. She could see now was, perhaps not the time for the dramatic reveal that yes, aliens really did exist and no, they definitely were not little green men from Mars. However, as unprepared as she surmised her new friend here was to that revelation, Kate equally wasn´t keen on omitting the whole truth either. ❝ ... some sort of illegal genetic experiment escaped from its facility. ❞ Short. Succinct. Wasn´t a complete lie.
She glanced at the woman. Really looked. Behind the confusion, the frightened young person she saw in front of her, Kate could sense the questions burning. Despite the circumstances, her lips curved ever so slightly upwards. Arms folded against her chest, Kate settled in beside her, one eye on the ¨clean-up crew¨ at all times. ❝ It seems we owe you our thanks; things could´ve been a lot worse if you hadn´t acted so quickly. Our medics tell me you´re a Doctor ... ❞ It wasn´t a question. Those fast reflexes. The way she´d taken care of all three of the wounded. Slowly, Kate leaned over, unfurling one hand just enough to offer it to the other woman. ❝ Kate Stewart - Unified Intelligence Taskforce. ❞

The men who are young and restless do not wear shirts. I am young. And I am occasionally restless.
@unitlead gets a thing because an ask turned into a whole starter idk what happened.
"Words are fun-- Wordz. Wuh-ur-duh-zuh. Wur-duzh. Werds." The Andalite was all too happy to play around with the mouth of his human form as though it were some niffty toy. At the end of the day, he was still, a child-- and in a moment like this perhaps that was the most clear. He looked no older than a teen, and his voice was unusually androgynous. The result of his combined morph.
"I am thankful for the tea. It is very hot. I enjoy hot. Hot-tuh. Do you have cinnamon buns here as well?" Brown eyes gazed up at her with naive curiosity. He was, after all, alone on this world. She and UNIT were the closest things he'd had to friends after being separated from his companions. He hadn't anticipated humans actually wanting to help him, but was also wary, as any child left alone would be. His thick American accent stood out though, distinctly one from Southern California.
"For a long time now I've had many questions about humans my friends could not answer Perhaps you could help, Prince Kate." Ax brought his hand to his throat as he spoke, feeling the vibrations through his fingertips. "I can feel the movement when I speak as well. Is this not a vulnerability? The airway is forward facing, toward potential opponents. A single strike can incapacitate if done in the right location, I have used this method before."
He'd had so many questions for so long to ask an adult human. Now that the opportunity had presented itself, he couldn't bring himself to stop.
❝ Afraid not, they're usually all gone after the morning briefing...try the pain au chocolat instead, you might like them. ❞ A snap followed those words as she took a bite out of a custard cream she'd been eyeing for the last five minutes. She'd found herself absolutely ravenous after todays antics had cut into her lunch break. Afternoon tea with an alien seemed like an acceptable compromise instead. Though, Ax looked anything but alien at the moment.
Kate found herself staring at the Andalite out of the corner of her eye as she topped up both their cups. Trying to catch a glimpse, some flaw in his disguise. Even if logic told her, she wouldn't. The Andalites didn't cloak themselves like other species did. They weren't pretending to be someone else, they became them. Complete metamorphosis. And Ax was young. A child at best, imagine, a grasp on morphing technology at such a young age. Kate wasn't without sympathy either. A young child, alone in the world? He was her responsibility as much as defending the Earth was.
❝ Ah, just Kate is fine. ❞ She muttered, waving the title away awkwardly. ❝ yes-yes I suppose it is. As the dominant species on our planet, its evolved for complex communication over responding to threats.... ❞ She trailed off, a frown marring her forehead as she thought about Ax's confession. " A method I have used before."
UNIT wasn't oblivious to the actions Ax and his teenage friends in North America had taken to protect humanity, but it felt chilling to hear those words come out of the mouth of a seemingly human teenager. Picturing an alien carrying out these events seemed more, palatable. ❝ You've been fighting for some time Aximili.❞ It wasn't unkind, or accusatory. Merely stating fact.
you’re gonna look me in my big brown eyes and tell me no?

"Don't you use that kind of language with me young lady. Where the bloody hell did you pick up that sort of language?" Alistair didn't have a problem with where the boy came from or his upbringing, actually he seemed to have a good head on his shoulders. Maybe it was just his stubbornness to accept that his first assumptions of the boy's character were wrong. And also the fact that he impregnated his unmarried daughter. Although he doesn't have much footing to stand on there and he's reminded of that fact when he looks out the kitchen window and sees Doris in the garden.
"The boy doesn't even talk properly." Ignoring the fact that it took him years of practice to perfect the received pronunciation he was now speaking in, being from Cornwall with parents that came from Scotland. "And the boy is divorced. Do you think that bodes well for your marriage that he's been divorced?" Now ignoring the fact that he himself was divorced. "And a soldier, I expected better for you." Once again ignoring the fact that he was once a soldier.
Maybe he was reaching for reasons to dislike the boy. To his surprise he's found that the boy has actually grown on him and he was very annoyed by this development. But everything was happening far to quickly for him, the relationship, the pregnancy, and the marriage. He's heard everyone feelings on the situation but the one person who's feelings he wanted to know. So far she has avoided discussing anything with him. "I just don't know, Kate. Everything has happened so fast. You're about to be married and you're going to have a child. And with everything that is happening in your life currently, I've yet to get you feelings on the situation."
Hands on her hips, she stared up at her father, a picture of her six year old self every time he promised he'd be home in time for tea, only to be called away on some emergency at work. She'd even completed the look with the same furious expression plastered across her features. Did he even stop to listen to himself? For one second? Everything he disliked in her Edward, were qualities he himself possessed .... almost as if well, as if he was trying to warn her off a lifetime of broken promises.
The calm, knowing voice of reason had reared its head at last. It wasn't smug. No, worse, it was gentle. Urging her to consider the similarities. It was funny, she never really thought of her mother these days. Their relationship had never been the best to start with and it had only shrunk to become virtually nonexistent when she'd opted to move in with her father and Doris. She thought of her now. Fiona Campbell, ( she'd gone back her maiden name almost as soon as she good. ) in the grips of paranoia, memorising the precise way her husband knocked at the door, because any other would be accompanied by the news of his death. She thought of the way her relationship had deteriorated with her mother because she was a reminder of that same man, and wondered for the first time, might the same thing happen again?
An uncomfortable knot twisted in her stomach, one that had everything and nothing to do with the life growing inside. Absently, her hand went to her stomach. History had a tendency to repeat themselves in the Lethbridge-Stewart family. Kate didn't believe in destiny. But she did believe in familiar patterns. "I've yet to get your feelings on the situation." Her father's words had struck a nerve she was unwilling to admit to just yet.
❝ so what I have to say finally counts does it? Well thank you dad, I'm so glad you finally asked ...❞ It didn't come out as venomous as she wanted. By the time she'd trailed off, catching her breath and glancing at her father, she was that six year old girl again. Scared. But she couldn't tell him that. Not him. ❝ I'm fine-I'm bloody well fine Dad. It's my life. I'll do with it as I want! ❞
Listening to past lives again. The irony of Kate telling off Osgood for not having a life outside of UNIT. Girlie doesn't want anyone else to sacrifice everything for this job the way she has to. 🥺😭
the time machine thrums against reality, engines wheezing in offended bursts as the blue box slides sideways, corrects itself, then somehow bounces out of the time vortex & skids to a halt on the pavement outside UNIT headquarters like a sulking animal refusing to sit.
the doctor stumbles out, catching himself on the frame as the TARDIS gave one last indignant clunk. “ oh don't, ” he grumbles, turning back to glare at the blue box, “ don’t you dare pretend that was my fault. that was a perfectly reasonable landing vector & you - ” he waves his hands in an incoherent circle. “ you decided to redecorate gravity. ”
the TARDIS responds by making a noise that sounds suspiciously smug. both hands are dragged through his hair as the timelord takes a breath in, forcing calm that didn’t quite stick. something is off. he can feel it; a pressure behind his eyes, a wrongness in the air that had nothing to do with UNIT’s ever-present security scanners sweeping over him. & he turns, finally taking in the building.
UNIT HQ. solid. defensive. alert. & humming. not audibly, not to humans. but to him, it felt like standing too close to a live wire.
“ oh, that’s why, ” he breathes out, “ sulking because you don’t like what’s under the car park. well join the club. ”
@unitlead liked !
❝ .... any change? ❞ "no ma'am, its just as you said, the lights are off and everythin' and none of the troops could pick it up on the scanners-" ❝ you won't be able to. It's operating at Zero-Point Energy. ❞ Which, while theoretically possible, had yet to be achieved on Earth. UNIT's commander sighed, hands steady on either side of the desk as she leaned in to observe the computer monitor in front of her. The light from the screen threw her features into sharp relief, blonde hair clipped back, large brown eyes seeming larger still behind a pair of thick rimmed glasses above which her brows had drawn together in bewilderment.
Hovering beside her and clad from head to toe in black, stood a UNIT officer named Roy Meah. He seemed to be waiting for the opportune moment to speak again. Kate could practically feel the confusion radiating off him. She sighed again. ❝... well, Corporal? What else? ❞ "it's-it's that box Ma'am. That blue police box. It's shown up on our scanners..…" He never got to finish that sentence. Kate's head whipped around so fast that the young Corporal actually took a step back in surprise. ❝ Show me. ❞ which was precisely how she found herself squinting into the light outside of UNIT's London Headquarters barely 10 minutes later, flanked by Corporal Meah and another officer.
Sure enough, just as the Corporal had reported, the very familiar shape of a blue police box stood out amongst the pavement, with the additional blessing of its pilot. Kate suppressed a tight lipped smile at the sight. ❝ Good to see you again Doctor, you always do seem to arrive when we need you most, though I-I don't see how you've managed it this time. ❞
@unitlead gets a random thing !
Smirking, Lilah taps red lacquered nails against the red wrapper in her hand. She tilts her head to the side. “I think you could use this more than me, Kit Kat.”
❝ Very amusing. ❞ Cold anger flickered across her features, head tilted upwards to meet Lilah's infuriating smirk. ❝ But i'll have to decline. You seldom hand out anything if it isn't attached to an ironclad contract. ❞
THERE IS A MOMENT where the nip of overseer tongue nearly pulls the bottoms from their shoes; stomach dropping a half-inch before the remaining reminder follows, and Commander Stewart - Kate - starkly reminds them of Magic. A force to push them to be better- reminding them why they're here.
❝ Thank you Commander, find me breathing in a paper bag later- jokes aside- ❞ was it in humour? they deflect with it- heart tattooing their ribs. this was their first find- they pull several sheafs of hand-written equations where she can see; surprisingly legible scrawl for a scientist: looped letters and numbers comparing what this was, to what UNIT has managed to measure of the blue police box.
❝ -this isn't your 'Time Lord'. At least not the one you have all your measurements based on. Er- Whatever it's doing it's made a good attempt a-at masking? Where the uhm. What did you call it- time and relative--- TARDIS! ❞ A quantum scientist's dream machine, but they'll fanfolk about it later.
❝ Where the TARDIS flits in and out- slipping the stream akin to a migrating fish without the 'only one direction' mandate -this thing is... I mean it's riding the surface tension. Think 'marble rolling atop a stretched silk scarf'. The energy may be the same, but the way it's moving I promise you is not! ❞
Marble rolling atop a stretched silk scarf? Ah, another scientist with a peculiar way of describing things. She wasn't irritated. Despite the need for urgency, UNIT's commander found it oddly amusing. They needed people who could think outside of the box, far more than they did idiotically blind soldiers. Kate had hoped that the appointment of Colonel Ibrahim might have helped to weed that trait out of the troops but alas, old habits and all that. It didn't matter. What UNIT soldiers lacked their science team more than made up for in their abilities. Present company included. ❝ ... that doesn't bode well for us. ❞
Kate exhaled a breath at the revelation. Not The Doctor. She peered over at the sheets of paper Doctor Wright presented her with the way one might peer over the edge of a particularly steep cliff face. ❝ Our track record with Time Lords varies from the tolerable if arrogant, to the type that thinks world domination is a god given right. ... let's hope it's the former, I've had my fill of the latter. ❞ She believed Ian. They had presented a solid case ...and the possibilities of the universe might've carried infinite variables but the math behind it was always solid. definite. Whoever was up there at the moment, it wasn't The Doctor. Still, she smiled.
❝ Excellent work Doctor Wright ... for now we'll keep to usual procedure when making first contact, cordial but firm with our instructions. They're in breach of Earth's Magnetosphere, they will state their intentions and assure us of their full cooperation. ❞ She paused, the smile becoming broader for just a fraction of a second. The sort where if you blinked, you might miss it. ❝ I'll need you to head a small team. monitor and assess the spacecraft as it passes into the atmosphere, cross reference with any former sightings ... ❞
Hey Katie, if they named an ice cream flavour after you and your hr boyfriend it would be called "pleasant scheduled vanilla"
Shut up bitch.
The truth, Conrad. As requested.
