You glumly laid on a park bench, your one arm hanging off to the side. Laying on your back like this gave you a good view of the sky, a transparent layer of atmosphere only slightly obscuring a complex series of tubes and the giant marbles that rolled through them. It'd be nice, you think, to have a path set for you like those marbles do, heading forward in one direction with the guarantee that you'd end up where you needed to. But the program didn't work like that. You clench a fist to your chest like you've done before whenever you were getting ready to cry. Maybe it'd be tears, or maybe everything would shatter once the rising tension burst through. It's not like you ever knew. But as you prepared yourself for the possibility, the process was halted by an unexpected variable: a soft hand rising up from below, gripping yours in a gentle embrace.
You shot up in surprise, despair temporarily forgotten as you glanced down to investigate. ENA's body had somehow snuck under the bench when you weren't looking, her sunshine-yellow arm still holding on to your hand as you reposition. As if knowing it was spotted, the formerly-headed body curled up into a ball and awkwardly rolled out from under the bench before standing up and taking a bow. You shook your head fondly, a smile gently tugging at the corners of your mouth at the absurdity. ENA's head floated up beside you, just out of sight, but it was easy enough to tell where she was. Her head made cartoonish hovering noises when it floated, and she had a kind of artificial lemongrass smell when she was close--not exactly vague identifiers when she decided to come around. Turning around to greet her, you watched as her head floated about to look at you from different angles before returning to her still-bowing body.
"Nice to see a fellow conspirator!" You were happy to see her, of course, but you suddenly became aware of how awkward it was to be caught out in the open despairing like this. You did your best to straighten your posture as ENA talked to you; however, your girlthing's chattering halted as you did so. You could never tell what was on her mind with that expression. With an unchanging smile but something unspoken in her eyes, she suddenly said, "... I don't mean to worry you, but I think you dropped something." You were going to ask what she meant before you were brought to your feet, closer to her due to a soft tug from her detached arm. She spoke even softer. "May I pick that up for you? I think it's over here..."
You're glad you followed ENA, regardless of wherever she was hauling you off to. You could've smiled, or looked away, somehow hidden your face. But you had a gut feeling that ENA had looked you over and already diagnosed your melancholy. She was very keen to your mood. That feeling of connection and sureness you had with ENA was surreal and hard to describe, but just as real as the purple-rusted, long abandoned train tracks that she was guiding you across. Once some time had passed with both of you walking in silence, ENA broke the quiet. "Your destination is to your right." She left your side and seated herself on a checkered blanket laying underneath some kind of stone fork trying to be a tree. It seems the field she took you to was full of these, being rested under by large living marbles which probably came up to about your knee. Even though they tottered around and chittered, you had a feeling that these little creatures eventually grew up into those big ones you saw in the sky. But it was just a theory. "Sit!" ENA enthusiastically patted the space beside her and you obliged.
When you caught the anomaly's stare, you noticed that she had turned blue when you weren't looking. With a wavering voice, she asked, "W-won't you tell me what you dropped? I didn't upset you, did I?" You quickly put the tired idea to bed. "T-then what's wrong? I need to know..." Hng... You weren't a big fan of sharing emotions, but when it came to ENA, you supposed it wouldn't hurt to let her know how gloomy you've been feeling lately. How directionless everything felt. Your girlthing was quick to pull you into a very teary hug, sniffling as she tried to reassure you. Her lemongrass-in-a-factory smell was... Comforting. What an odd thing to be comforted by, and yet you were. "I-I'm... So familiar with this strain of sadness..." ENA traced sad little shapes on your back with her cool, blocky fingers. Did... did she just trace a frowny face? She parted from you and you wiped some of her tears off for her. It must be a bother dealing with them all the time, you thought. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, this is supposed to be about you." Her cloudburst over, a channel was changed on her face, and you were now tuning in to sunshine. "Ahem. Apologies... I suppose I just wanted you to know that I'm here to intercept all of your tribulations. As you know, I'm quite familiar with the field. And when I'm sad for too long, I have something which always picks me up right on time. Want to see~?" ENA turned away to dig through her inventory for a moment before procuring something small, yet evidently precious the way she held it so gently in her hands, like a baby bird. Opening her dual-colored hands, she revealed something amazing: A tiny you! "Hmm... Actually, this treasure might only work on me. Well, until you get your own, will you be okay settling for m--ACK!"
ENA's tender gesture was quickly interrupted by one of the marble-things rolling into her and knocking her forward. With no time to react, the blockhead cascaded into a smooch with you, both of you toppling over onto each other. ENA apologized as her lips parted from yours and she rolled off of you. "Ah, are you OK, love? I believe some refer to this as a happy accident." Making sure she's alright, you look out into the field and observe the marble-things blindly rolling into each other and causing chaos. This isn't anything at all like the directed, linear paths the ones in the sky took. ENA placed her hand on yours as she considered your observation. "I wouldn't be surprised if they don't know where to go yet. Perhaps they must endeavor to find one of these tubes before they acquire too much size. It's just a theory, but... How fascinating!" The mechanics of these weird marble creatures were interesting to you, sure, but your focus was on ENA's yellow hand resting on yours. Its warmth, and the comforting feeling of its odd, almost synthetic flesh, made you feel like you'd found your route, or tube, or road, or whatever it was. Direction? No, this was more than that. Something unnamed. All you knew is that, as you pressed a kiss to ENA's cool blue cheek, you felt like you were slotted in right where you needed to be. A gentle smile spread to both of your faces.
