Connection: Long before there were any primates with a neocortex, mammals split off from other vertebrates and evolved the capacity to feel social pains and pleasures, forever linking our well-being to our social connectedness. Infants embody this deep need to stay connected, but it is present through our entire lives. Mindreading: Primates have developed an unparalleled ability to understand the actions and thoughts of those around them, enhancing their ability to stay connected and interact strategically. In the toddler years, forms of social thinking develop that outstrip those seen in the adults of any other species. This capacity allows humans to create groups that can implement nearly any idea and to anticipate the needs and wants of those around us, keeping our groups moving smoothly. Harmonizing: The sense of self is one of the most recent evolutionary gifts we have received. Although the self may appear to be a mechanism for distinguishing us from others and perhaps accentuating our selfishness, the self actually operates as a powerful force for social cohesiveness. During the preteen and teenage years, adolescent refers to the neural adaptations that allow group beliefs and values to influence our own.

Words of Wisdom for my Division III: When you want to get good at something, how you spend your time practicing is far more important than the amount of time you spend. … Regular practice simply isn’t enough. To improve, we must watch ourselves fail, and learn from our mistakes.

Thank you to everyone who came to Third Thursday yesterday evening! It was so wonderful hearing from some new and old faces.
For those who weren't there we heard some beautiful poems, raps ,songs, tap moves, and gorgeous instrumentals.
We did two vocal jams, which was a beautiful experience shared with everyone.
Can't wait for next month. Suggestions, comments, and ideas are welcome. I'm already brainstorming to make next months a blast.
Yesterday I made an announcement about the future of the Centrum Gallery, so if you want to know more or want to be involved send a shout out!

Beautifully Stated: One of the things I was thinking about, of course, was creating spaces for people. So to me, the works each have an improvisatory character—not in how they were made but in that they will be ‘completed’ by other people and experienced in lots of different ways.

Revitalizing the Centrum Gallery
Today I went to go talk with Byron McCrae, the new Dean of Students at Hampshire College. I got to present some ideas about the use of the centrum gallery in Donut 1.
After discussing the needs of the space and the plan for it to function as a creative hub space, we reached some exciting news!
We have a budget to revitalize the space so that performers, artists, musicians, art enthusiast, organizers, and creators can have a space to jam ideas!
This is a really exciting opportunity as well as a creation of space for our community on campus.

Wow! Check out what one of our community members did this summer. I would be really interested to assist with making one of these sculptures here at Hampshire campus! Let's think of some ideas of a location and materials.
Thanks Corey for the submission!
Recyled Bottle Art.
For the Big Up Festival 2013 this summer, I volunteered for the art department. We used 100s of collected water bottles from concert fields as well as aluminum beer cans that piled up during the pre-festival construction. We chose the entrance bridge to the venue/vendor area as the site for the recycled sculptures. I put together the beer can spiral by pushing each can into a section of the chain link fence. People really enjoyed the art as they walked to and from the camping areas, some people even added to the project! This was a simple, reusable use of consumer products in a temporary sculpture that engaged the unknowing passerby.

Warming-Up: Today I played with ideas of space and containing shapes. I started with drawing my own shadow, capturing the shape of a lamp pole, and thought about interacting and influencing the walk way from the Art Barn to Cole Science Center.
Did anyone interact or have thoughts? Suggestions or want to further the project? Submit or Ask!
