GAS MASK II #3dprintpen #3dpen #gasmask #masks #leather #sinister #mask #prettydisaster
ART! WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?.. ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.
A breakdown of the work I have been creating..
My work tends to be personal and highly influenced on what is going on in the present moment . It is often sculptural based with hidden narrative or thoughts that I have expressed subtly hoping to encourage discussion. One of the important things for me is that everyone can appreciate and enjoy art without having to feel they need to be on a certain intellectual level. I’m trying this out in Calgary by exposing the public to a familiar image.
What I have been looking at during my stay:
Contrast of buildings - When I first arrived I needed to see some of Calgary and form relationships with my surroundings to be able to respond. I was interested in the contrast between the older heritage buildings in comparison to the sky scrapers. I was shocked when people said they prefer the ultra modern reflective buildings in comparison to these beautifully crafted houses in different colours with detail and charm. I soon began to realise I had a fascination with both I wanted to create a heritage building sculpture but using the reflective materials of the skyscrapers. The idea came from an elderly woman painting the windows of her traditional home and spurred the idea of upcycling these original houses to appeal to a new market rather than allowing them to deteriorate. Unfortunately I couldn’t push this idea due to the lack of metal/wood work facilities in my space. I did check out Protospace another makerspace within Calgary that could offer those facilities however without a car it was really difficult to access. I spent time at artist Jeff De Boer’s Studio an amazing metal work artist and hoping to head back before I leave to learn some cool things!
Hoose heeds - I did not ditch my research on the houses what I did instead was worked over the images and discovered some of the shapes in the houses were making surreal faces. I drew them then created 2-D faces from my sketches the made a 3-d mystical head. Its exaggerated features made me think about how in traditional african sculptures they exaggerated parts of the body that symbolised fertility etc. I enjoyed this process as it was good as a starter point but soon drifted to another idea.
Game changer - My work took a turn as I began to question whether we are missold happiness and what society want us to believe is the core reason to happiness. We seem to believe the ideal family, having children, the big house and an everlasting relationship is the happiest way forward but is it just because we are used to being told this? Are you shocked when a 40 year old women in a relationship hasn’t got kids? etc. I feel we are in an era now where people are beginning to challenge this concept. I have had discussions with people here in Calgary about how they have left their faith or the way they are told they have to live their lives because of their community and then are shunned by their families and friends because they want to live their life a different way.
Happiness? - The notebook I bought before I came to Calgary says ‘Stay Curious’ on the front cover and that is exactly what I did! In the first week there was a slow start in me creating work I decided to go between three methods to get me started... Sketchbooking, creating a progress piece when I was given a scrap bit of plywood by Maria, I decided I would work on this piece during my stay rather than one long sitting. Also pallette making I created 22 miniature palettes out of scrap wood and popsicle sticks as my meditation to get my creative mind flowing. The progress piece was influenced by my what is happiness idea. I created 3 main mystical characters: The soul mate, The child bearer, the virgin and genderpuss. Each evolved from an idea to sketches then I wanted to challenge myself to use the laser cutter. I took photos of my sketches then uploaded the photo file in Illustrator and painstakingly edited these then laser cut them whilst experimenting on different materials such as cork, wood, leather and perspex From this narrative of the mystical characters I had many ideas I could go to for creating a sculpture but chose to focus on the progress piece as well as a small centaur clay sculpture who is escaping the genital peoples temptation.
Experimentation - Using the 3-D pen I began creating small doodles, a woman's face with continuous line then onto creating a gas mask you can see in an earlier post. I experimented with lino cutting for the first time in 2 years. Recycling the dud 3d print parts and learning new software such a 123d make and design.
Progress Piece Collage - How it started… The virgin a majestic fairy painting looks down at the curious world we live in. The sexy soul mate half man half horse is surrounded by false relationships present and past. The child bearer a confident plus size individual swims past the lonely child even though as a women we are programmed to be nurturing she decides to ignore this side. Found objects, magazines and newspaper cuttings combine together aesthetically. This piece made me think about how different images can form relationships creating a narrative whether this is on purpose or not. The idea that all people can relate to art if they recognise a small part of the piece there imagination might curate their own narrative.
Tinder. - The single life smothered me over here. The dating game kinda become a real game to me. It started with the intentions to meet new people who could show me around Calgary. However after a handful of dates modern dating in a digital era became intriguing to me. Inspired by Amalia Ulmans Excellences and Perfections play on photography and performance. I wanted to create a piece based on both of those elements plus humour representing the repetition of dating.. This project may be continued back home?
Penis Art - Has been a subject in not only contemporary art for a long period but historically. The greeks claim that a big penis represented stupidity and those animal like, However a small penis represented intellectual qualities. Today Western christian values can be negative. Despite in the studio, my space is right next to Ryan, a christian - he just laughs and thinks i’m off my head haha. My interest in Penis Art is the opportunity to take a familiar symbol to most/all people and allow them to feel part of something using collage and sculpture. People will be able to make a comment about the art because it will be a familiar symbol whether they find it disgusting, laugh etc. We will all be on the same level and can add whatever intellectual understanding they want to the piece. The context of this project did evolve from dating - my continuous curse of meeting unusual characters influenced a small project where I made 6 small penises based on my experience of the date which was usually negative but usually hilarious. I would share my stories with friends in the space and this made me think of penis public art humorous art we can all relate to.
Today the three amigos went to Banff, nope not the usual Banff I Instagram - A more beautiful place. #banff #calgary #goodday #goodpeople #postcard #evian #banffsprings (at Banff, Alberta)

MY HOOSEY...
Maria Hoover collected me at the airport, her and husband Shannon offered to host me during my two month visit they also run the studio space Archeloft. I met Maria online when I was researching studio spaces and workshops for the Creative Travel Award, immediately we had a good relationship and spoke about what the space could offer me and how it could benefit my practice. At the time I had secured accommodation with the University of Calgary but wasn't 100% that was where I wanted to stay it was out with the Downtown area which was closer to the studio. I explained this to Maria and She mentioned she had previously hosted people, I would have my own room and en suite and they were located in the Inglewood area. We negotiated a price and that was that.
It was meant to be!... Inglewood is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Calgary it has a lot of character and diversity from restaurants to shops also close to the esker foundation an office building with a contemporary art gallery on the top floor. I couldn’t be happier staying with these two they have helped me so much with how to get around Calgary, introduced me to artists and taken me to events. They immediately made me feel welcome. (I recommend people on a budget travelling abroad if you establish a good relationship with someone before you travel via the internet, skype etc. Do your research and feel confident enough then have someone host you. This way you will get a better feel for the city and be exposed to so many things you might not have experienced on your own.) I never thought I would stay with strangers but now I have gained two friends for life + met a countless amount of great people threw them.
TheSTUDIO:)
THE STUDIO..
I arrived in Calgary on the 19th of July @3pm YYC time. Fresh off the plane despite my long haul flight and leaving Aberdeen at 2am the previous day, I couldn't conceal my excitement to see what my studio would be like. Straight to the loft Maria and I went, as i walked up the stairs to Archeloft (the studio) I was pleasantly surprised at how big the space was in comparison to the photos. I found Archeloft via the internet whilst I was back home I was intrigued about working in a makerspace community.
I was focused on finding a studio online mainly just to work in and store my things. When I came across Archeloft they presented opportunities to host workshops and collaborate with other members. They also had laser cutting and 3D printing facilities which i felt would be interesting to learn more about. A couple of weeks in the space and I already felt like I was at home. All members made me feel welcome and spoke to me about what I could do during my time In Calgary. Immediately I knew Archeloft was the right decision for me.
The opportunity I was given from Aberdeen city council was not granted to me because I am an established artist. But to allow me to focus on contemporary art practice to create, learn, discuss, meet new people and expand my knowledge in new surroundings. Some of the members run their business out of the space, I thought this would Intimidate me but it was a very small aspect in the space in regards to the people themselves. They were genuinely interested in what i could do and how they could help me.
The first week I walked around and got to know the city, taking photos of what interested me around Calgary whilst working in my sketchbook as a bit of recluse. The more time I spent in the space I was shown software to create 3 dimensional work. I was looking at how I could use these software's in a way that I could understand as I have always struggled with technology. I shortly found out the benefit to the makerspace was the diversity of people that could give you a fresh outlook on a project or a way around a problem and even teaching you something you would have never even thought about. From fashion designers to baristas to engineers to artists and many more creative individuals in between, the makerspace environment is about building a culture of creativity and discovering a variety of tools and materials to be able to create, invent and explore new things!
My adventure to Canada unleashed…
FIRST IMPRESSIONS…
Besides getting slightly grilled at immigration because I was insanely nervous travelling on my own for the first time overseas. Everything was good :) The city is beautiful I will talk about what inspired me in a different post. One very important factor for me to get across for Calgary is... I can’t speak for all of Canada but definitely the people of Calgary are the kindest most welcoming people I have ever met. I was blown away by how much people care for each other, their city and everything they do. I am a tourist of couuuuurse so one of the first things i did was visit the Glenbow Museum.. Reading about the Native Indians I bought a bookmark that i felt related to Calgary it said:
‘Grandfather, Great Spirit, Teach us Love, Teach us Compassion, And Teach us Honour, That we may heal the earth and heal each other.’
•American Indian Prayer
Still some snagging to do but happy how this is coming along. #creativetravelaward #alwayslearning #makerspace #archeloft #3dpenart #3dpen #gasmask #dangerouslybeautiful #contemporaryart #experimenting #dirtyneon
More experiments with Ryan's 3D pen. I think there about $90 not a bad price either. Slowly trying to adapt to modern technology and art., not so good at this. #experiment #oldskool #experimental #calgary #archeloft #3D #3dprinting #3dpenart #face #twoinone #

Found a cat camping and took it home. Just kidding. This is Snowie (yes. I named it) we bonded for a few days and a long ass trip back to Calgary from Invermere. Yesterday she finally got to meet her new owner. Instagramed as a wee memory for me of this blue eyed troublemaker. #kitten #ragdollcat #blueeyes #littleshit #butfun #imactuallyallergictocats
