Anduin Wrynn is Gay and Christie Golden Thanked Me for Saying So
(I’m posting this pretty much verbatim from a twitter thread I did when someone asked me how Anduin was gay.)
So, when we first meet Anduin, he’s just a wee lad serving as figurehead king. Not much going on until we get to the comics. This is where Anduin’s character development begins in earnest. He’s introduced as this scrawny kid who is terrible with a sword and doesn’t fit into the traditional role of his gender at all, despite many people’s attempts to shove him into these roles and seeing his effeminate personality as a short-coming. This is something that a lot of people on the LGBT spectrum have to deal with. We’re raised to fit a certain role, but who we are intrinsically is incompatible with that role. No matter how hard we or anyone else tries, we will never fit inside those boxes, because that’s not who we are.
In Blood of Our Fathers, Anduin actually breaks down and cries over this fact. He’s been trying to force himself to be something he’s not, and he perceives that as a failure because that’s what he’s been taught his whole life. Again, very LGBT struggle.
Starting in The Shattering and continuing into Mists of Pandaria, we see Anduin’s character arc come to fruition. Through spending time with people (the pandaren) who accept him as he truly is, without thinking that his differences are bad, Anduin learns t accept himself and becomes so much stronger, braver, and happier. In the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, he summons a barrier that shield an entire pagoda against the sha explosion, something that takes a lot of mana and power. He is willing to lay down his life for the greater good when he goes, alone, to face down Garrosh Hellscream, something not a lot of people would have the guts to do, much less a fifteen year old.
When I was a wee young lesbian trying to accept myself, finding other people who accepted, loved, and befriended the authentic me helped me go from shy, awkward, and quick to anger to someone who was more out-going, amiable, and just generally at ease with my place in the world. Which is also what happens to Anduin.
Tl;dr Anduin Wrynn is gay because his story, for lack of a better descriptor, is gay. His character is something which resonates with gaymers who play Warcraft, and a lot of gaymers like him for the reason that he’s relatable to us. When people say, “uwu he doesn’t have to be gay he’s just sensitive! my smol straight cinnamon roll son” it’s infuriating. Because it undermines us, and his character. There’s not really a reason why the Alliance can’t be lead by a compassionate and brave king who also happens to be gay and in love with another man. World of Warcraft is a universe of endless possibilities; don’t tell me your suspension of disbelief extends to cosmic godlike windchimes but stops short at an openly gay character.
