An Ursvali noblewoman astride a moose in deep snow.

The domesticated moose population in this setting originates on Ursval, where they are advantageous to ride through the region's deep winter snows. Moose have spread via trade to Bylaea, parts of the northern Dainlands, and the northwestern Rift Valleys (though camelops are prefered in the latter two regions, and tend to be less wild and needy in captivity)

Only cow moose (typically those prevented from breeding) and geldings are ridden on a regular basis- bulls (even of the domestic stock) tend to retain aggressive behaviors and proclivities for roaming wide swaths of territory, and thus are kept mostly for breeding stock.

Ursvali crop their ears in a similar fashion to the Varkhata-Byla to the northeast, a people they have trade connections with but no actual shared cultural history. In the case of the Ursvali, it is not a universal cultural identifier but signifier of age and status. Only wed and reproductive adults crop their ears (and due to elowey social structure, many adults never reproduce). The boar tusk piercings indicate this specific mother's noble house.
