wow, I also like finding a gravestone and descending a staircase under it to rescue a very powerful girl who gains experience and strength very quickly alongside you while grinding enemies and...
actually fucking evil I think the Bread item being "required" for Weird Route progression might be a direct reference to the Breadcrumb glitch
The Breadcrumb Glitch is a glitch in mother 1 where you can use the ripped girl, Pippi, to perform a glitch using an item called Breadcrumbs.
It gets you out of bounds in an area that looks like this:
which looks almost exactly like the evil place you can see from the Forgotten Island.
and using the Breadcrumb Glitch in Mother 1 you can skip a large portion of the game.
you will recognize this reference in this context as being evil evil evil evil FUCKING evil
but my question is, if what happened at the end of the weird route can still result in a Chapter 7 side B being possible, what the fuck happens in the regular Chapter 7 side A?
I figured this out last night myself, nice to see more people talking about it as this seems to be a massive key to cracking open the Weird Route/B-Side. A lot of this will be modified from a comment I made earlier on a YT video, though I promise this should be interesting
The Ace that is observing this space also calls it āLousy real estate" in reference to the houses, and also says he found it by trying to see as far as he can. āSeeing too farā is something referenced throughout the weird route, most notably by Spamton NEO in his ending monologue.
but also by Noelle here in reference to the other side of the lake.
Given this is past the boundaries of the map, this could be the coveted āWorldās Edgeā mentioned in the prophecy, or an edge that will count for such purposes. Given this areas ties to the weird route specifically I am skeptical of the former.
This sequence also seems to parallel sections within the SWORD ROUTE, specifically going on the raft to the ice palace (Noelle describes the waters as getting colder as she goes further, the Glacier area in board 2 is made of bizarre white geometry which terrifies Ralsei, as we see also prior to this if you go to the school, and āsnowā is a common description for garbage video data (like TV static, or garbled game assets). What the Ice Palace would be in this context is... something. I'll try to discuss it later
Noelle bringing us this way also brings to mind FOLLOW THE WHITE CLOAK, though this seems like it will be needed for later. Depends on if Noelleās survives her "voyage".
What this Out of Bounds area entails for us is unknown besides being a place of evil and doom. Going off of the glitch in Mother 1,Ā using the breadcrumbs again in certain spots allows you to wrong warp into other parts of the game, including the door to the final boss and even the game over screen.
Possibilities Iāve considered are:
that itās a wrong warp to an area in chapter 7
It's a hub to access bizarre areas were not meant to be in for the purposes of āgetting strongerā (see Rambās description of the Sword Route as having more Freedom). Possibly includes past dark worlds or even ""unused"" dark worlds, though I have a specific thought I'll get to later
If the Mother 1 glitch can access rooms that shouldnt be playable like the game over screen, it may be possible to find a way of āplayingā inside the games menu, perhaps ultimately leading to a fake arbitrary code execution (ACE) and breaking the game even harder.
What I think seems most interesting, however, is that it might be some way of entering the primordial āāoriginal gameāā of Deltarune. 6.
So, what is the original game?
Deltarune is full of references to stories being adapted from other stories (see Cat Petterz rpg <- Dragon Blazerz <- Lord of the Hammer <- Prophecy, or even the Dark Worlds being adaptations of the Light World).
Deltarune has also made a lot of the story of its own creation diagetic to the narrative (see how often Waiting comes up in game and in promotional material ect.),
Part of this story is a version from 2012 that went nowhere, one that appears to have lacked the sparing system based on stuff like this early version of Jevil's "numbers game" line
This suggests it was a game where you were expected to be enacting violence within the dark world, something you cant do in the game as is.
The Mantle game is described as an original version of a game modified by Tenna that (mostly) removes the Violence and Weird Route centric elements from the game and in its place adds jokes, goofy set pieces, and storylines, as well as making it more linear. Ralsei in the current chapter is also stated as clearly suppressing some violent abilities involving fire, and the Sword Route and 4th Egg room suggest Kris is hiding some violent urges too
Where is the Mantle game? Backstage in an area an area the viewer is not meant to be in. In otherwords, its literally found out of bounds.
The chapter 3 egg room (with the Ace and their binoculars) also has some other traits. It being 8-bit but with normal Kris is one but also the egg mans dialogue: Referring to a time where the world looked like this (a gamboy-esque retro game)
(Next lines might be about the games development into the modern game though I am uncertain)
While not literally the 2012 prototype of the game, I believe the weird route might be building up to a version of Deltarune more ""faithful"" to its original vision prior to Undertale (or at least presented within the story as such).
Another minor thing is that I have a suspicion that the "ice palace" we find the SWORD ROUTE might be alluding to us using the area across the water to access an ""scrapped"" dark world (perhaps intended as the Holiday Residence or the Town Hall). Its important enough to seemingly be a part of Dragon Blazers, yet nowhere in the game implies it is or could be a thing outside the ice palace. It also needs a specific party member to traverse which is very obviously Noelle, which further ties it to the weird route.
I am sure I will develop more on these ideas but rn this has been circling my mind since last night when I thought to look more into the "breadcrumbs glitch"'s relationship to Deltarune. If anyone wants a name for this thing, idk like "Original Game Theory"
Iāll roll with Original Game Theory and offer my 2 cents:
Eram is the Original Gameās Jevil.
Hear me out.
Letās talk about the original concept for Deltarune. What do we know about it? We know that the ending came to Toby in a dream. We know that Kanotynesā characters would have been in it. We know it was more violent than the Deltarune we got. We know the songs āJoker Battleā (which became Heartache in Undertale) and the main battle theme (which became Bonetrousle). We know that Ralsei was supposed to use fire magic.
Hereās my first and weakest evidence.
Look at Kanotyneās concept art for Jevil:
(important: these were not made as part of the original card designs that inspired the game)
Now look at Eram/the Shadow Mantle holder:
Okay, thatās silly. What do Jevil and Eram actually have in common? Knives? Theyāre both aware that theyāre in a game. They both invite Kris to play with them violently. When Eram tells Kris that it can āsee in the dark / can you?ā thereās a lot that phrase could mean, but I take it to mean accepting the nature of their constructed reality. Speaking of Kris, you know who else bears a strange resemblanceā¦
Aqua. Yeah Iām going to talk about Aqua look at my pfp
Aqua is one big Jevil reference. The knives, the spinning, the laugh, the games, the chaos. Just look at her:
(suspiciously mantle-shaped hair) (suspiciously mantle-shaped bullet pattern)
Aqua is also a spoof on Kris. She herself points out the obvious similarities: she wears ribbons, holds a knife, and is blue. She mimics Krisās moves. She likes to play games.
So why does Aqua (the flower most immediately similar to Kris) have so many ties to Jevil? Why does Ralsei name-drop Jevil in their break with Seth, when Jevil has hardly been mentioned since the first chapter? I think weāre being primed to notice the connections.
Hereās where this post goes from ānoticing parallelsā to āpure speculation.ā
Dess (this is a Dess-Knight blog) created the Card Kingdom dark world. The Card Kingdom and Cyber World darkners are patterned after her memories. The most obvious example is Queen as a loose reflection of Carol, but there are others. Look at Clover, for example: She likes SPORTS, TREES, and BOYS. She likes Ralsei because heās fluffy with glasses, like Asriel. Sheās even bisexual
These are all Dess-related traits, chopped and screwed into a Darkner. Itās far from one-to-one, but thatās not the point. These similarities also exist on a thematic meta-level, giving the player info about Dess before they even know what theyāre looking at, like how the rest of Card Kingdom reflects Dessās perspective in a Persona-mind-palace style.
Jevil, I would argue, is Card Kingdomās Kris. This is on two levels: the narrative level of Dess creating a dark world and imbuing it with her memories, and the thematic level of Jevil and Krisās symbolic similarities. Like, everybody knows that Spamton is a parallel for Kris. Everybody knows Head Hathy and Werewerewire are similar to Kris. Doesnāt mean they are Kris, but they give us insights into Krisās personality and their characterās role in the story.
Symbolically: the knives. The cage. The freedom.⢠The meta-awareness of living in a game. We know Kris wore devil horns, maybe Dess saw young Kris as a little demonic Jester? Jevil met a strange someone, started viewing the world as a game, and was imprisoned by the four kingsāor, in his words, they imprisoned themselves. We donāt know exactly what the Dreemurr and Holiday families did after the Dessapearance, maybe this has something to do with that, maybe Iāve got terminal theory-brain.
But if Jevil is Card Kingdomās Kris, how do we explain Seam? The court magician, Jevilās old friend?
Catti! Krisās other childhood friend!
Catti, who the game has very loudly informed us was someone Kris studied the occult with as a kid. They summoned a demon together and Catti abandoned Kris because she was too afraid. The ādemon was Gaster!!!ā theory is old news at this point, Iām not interested in that. What I am interested in is that Eram also has an association with cats: the FRIENDs that it summons during its battle. Iām also not touching the āCatti is FRIENDā theory, if itās true and FRIEND is Cattiās way of keeping an eye on Kris in the dark world, whatever. Itās just another parallel between Kris and Jevil.
Actually let me speculate a little more, for fun
In the Dreemurr house, we find a copy of Cat Petters RPG under Asrielās bed, with ācatti & cattyā written on it in gel pen. Noelleās blog post tells us that itās a rip-off of Dragon Blazers and that it contains minigames from the original Cat Petters (the Mike minigames). We also find a knock-off controller that many think is the OddController. Is this copy of Cat Petters the item that becomes Mantle in the dark world? Is it just the Mike Room? Idk. What I like is the idea that this adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation becomes, in the dark, a retro-style version of the original story that Deltarune was adapted from.
Original Deltarune, which Iām going to call B-side.
I find it interesting that all of the enemies in Mantle are simplified representations of other characters, that donāt appear anywhere else in the game, but the FRIENDs that Eram summons are just FRIENDs. The same FRIENDs that appear hidden throughout other dark worlds. Maybe FRIEND is from the B-side. Fuck it, maybe the demon summoning was FRIEND after all, and Kris and Dess followed its pointed tail back to the B-side, and Dess was lost. I can feel the theorizing flowing through my veins!!
Back on track. What does any of this have to do with Jevil?
The prophecy tells the same story, over and over. In Card Kingdom and Cyber World (both Dess dark worlds) you have a field, a forest/city, and a castle. These can be loosely mapped onto the Original Gameās Desert, Island, and City boards. In both dark worlds, you descend into the basement to fight a secret boss with eerie similarities to Kris. In the Original Game, you descend into the manhole dungeon to fight Eram, a boss with eerie similarities to Kris.
Dess fell into the B-side. Deltarune is the Mother 3 to B-Sideās Mother 1. Like the above post said, the B-side is what Kris sees from Mancountry, and itās where they and Noelle went, out of bounds. Itās the original game that Deltarune is patterned after. The āUNUSEDā script in the code is Dess calling out from the unused original game.
This is why the Knight fuzzes with CRT static when theyāre hurtājust like the āinsert side Bā screen. When the Knight āswoonsā a party member, the flavor text references text from Mother 1. The Knight isnāt from a game where enemies get spared.
The Original Deltarune was a game featuring Kanotynesā playing-card designs. It had a ājoker battleā somewhereāthe same track that became āHeartache,ā Torielās theme, the boss battle at the end of the UNDERTALE demo. This is, again, pure speculation, but proto-Jevil could very likely have been the boss battle at the end of Original Deltarune, instead of the secret boss that we got in Chapter 1. I can personally hear some musical similarities between THE WORLD REVOLVING and Heartache, as well as ASGORE, which reuses Heartacheās motifs, but that could just be confirmation bias. Either way, Toby saw fit to reuse ājoker battleā as a battle theme against a horned boss with fire magic (and then use that themeās motifs again, against another horned boss with fire magic). Maybe original Jevil leaned harder into the ādevilā theme. Maybe it looked like Eram.
More pure speculation: original Jevilās dialogue reminds me a lot of Flowey. In Undertale, the whole story leads up to us fighting a king that we think is the final boss. Then a character with meta-knowledge of the world pops up, goes āhee hee hee,ā and fights you. Maybe in the original, playing-card-inspired Deltarune, Jevil would pop up after Spade King and reveal himself as the true final boss of the chapter. Maybe Toby re-purposed that story beat for Undertale. Who can say.
I donāt know where Ralseiās fire magic fits into this. If we roll with the idea that B-side is a more violent version of the story, Ralsei suppressing fire magic in an attempt to enact a more peaceful version of the prophecy (confirmed for realsies in chapter 5) makes sense. Maybe the āinferno of jealousyā from the Lord of the Hammer was a more literal inferno in B-side.
anyways if that all sounded like nonsense to you hereās my smoking gun:
