Laugh

Karin's laugh started out as something quiet. Soft, and lulling - almost like a song. But when fires burned her throat dry [ figuratively, of course ] and she collapsed upon herself, it became nothing but a forgotten memory.

Eventually, she found it again, triggered by all the wrong things. Harsh barks, like the bite of winter. Teeth that conveniently bared themselves, revealing sharp edges. Eyes that glinted like concealed blades. Her laugh became a requiem.

And then -- she found her home. It softened eventually. It still retains some of that tang even now, but there's a rosy hue to her cheeks when she grins and her chuckles are light. Verse two of a song thought dead.
