HOW TO STEP UP YOUR WIG STYLING GAME
Before I list off my tips, I just want to include a very important piece of info! Something I learned when styling wigs is that once you accomplish your first super challenging wig…you feel like you can almost do any wig you put your heart into. Skills you get in one wig can easily be transferred into another wig. Many wigs have similar methods that you can re-use over and over again. All it takes is a little bit of confidence c: 1- Get the idea that “styling extreme wigs is like styling a real person’s hair” out of your system. You can use products like: super glue, clear caulking, hot glue, foam, fabric dye or whatever your creativity wants you to use. Look at a wig like you would look at building a prop. Envisioning a wig to be a craft project can make insane looking hairstyles seem much more possible. 2- Watch/read tutorials EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT DOING THE SAME CHARACTER THE TUTORIAL DEMONSTRATES. The info that a tutorial can provide can transferable to your own personal project or just to add to mental list of wig styling methods. Here’s a great list of tutorials: http://arda-wigs.com/pages/tutorials-articles http://students.washington.edu/costume/wordpress/tutorials/the-basics- of-wig-styling/ http://cosplaytutorial.com/list.php#wigs 3- Learn to proportion. The character’s hair spike is about as long as their face? How long is my face? 9 inches? Ok then I am making the spike 9 inches. Oh wait. That’s too unrealistically long, I’ll re-proportion it to half the size of my face and do the same with the rest of the spikes. Done. 4- Tools of trade? A basic starting wig styling kit should include: -Wig head -Comb(s) -Got2be glued gel -Got2be glued hair spray -Thinning shears -Regular shears -Alligator clips -Small elastic hair ties -Foam curlers -Blow dryer -Straightener (can be purchased at Sally’s beauty supply store, Walmart, online wig shops) 5- USE A MALE WIG HEAD FOR YOUR STYLING. Why? They are much more similar to the size of an actual human head. 6- Understand the differences between wig wefts, wig fibers, and lace fronts vs non lace fronts. Here’s a good guide. 7- Do not underestimate the power of a hair blow dryer. (Especially if you work with Arda wig’s fibers). Just like a heat gun is to Worbla. You can shape, add volume, and set/dry gel with a blow dryer. 8- Familiarize yourself with wig styling lingo What does it mean to ventilate a lace front? What is stubbing?! A simple google search can open so many doors. If this list helped you, feel free to reblog to share with your followers~ c:
Thank you for reading!
This is a fantastic list! And they are right, a hair blow dryer is you best friend.
I have been searching for a way to do eyebrows for cosplay that works for ages. My eyebrows are just too dark and thick to really do anything. I was watching RuPaul’s Drag Race when I realized that these fabulous drag queens have had the secret the whole time! This tutorial is amazing. You guys should check it out.
I'm reblogging because he is honest and puts it all out there.
How to sew Welt Pocket for Yuzu coat and any other garment
Yuzu coat sewing pattern is very popular in Waffle Patterns in this season. It features 2 types of the pocket ; a quick and easy patch type and an authentic welt type. The welt type takes time and patience to sew, and the step by step illustrated instruction is included in the pattern. But I want more people try that, because it is totally worthy and adds professional look on your coat. So, here is a sewalong of the welt pocket! Off course, you can apply this pocket for any other suitable jacket/coat patterns.
How to sew the Welt Pocket
<< Cut Fabric / Interfacing >>
Cut the parts and put the markings as the pattern indication. (Be careful the photo shows only right side parts, please double them for L/R sides pockets). Put interfacing on the Welt and the pocket open place of the bodice. (For the sample in the photo, I use a square fabric piece instead of the bodice for the explanation.)
<< Fold and crease welt fabric >>
Press and crease the Pocket Welt before stitching as the finished shape.
<< Stitch pocket pouch front and welt >>
1. Open the folded parts on the Pocket Welt. Place the Pocket Pouch Front and the Pocket Welt right sides together, match the notches and sew. 2. Press the seam to the Pocket Pouch side.
<Attach welt and pouch fabrics to the bodice >>
1. Check the markings on the Pocket pieces and the pocket places on the right side of the bodice.
2. Place the Pocket Welt onto the pocket place of the bodice right sides together, matching the lines. Sew between the notches using short stitch length. 3. Place the Pocket Pouch Back onto the bodice right sides together. Put the both attaching lines together and sew between the notches.
<< Cut slit on bodice >>
Flip the Welt and the Pouch and cut a slit on the Bodice as shown. Get close to the corner, but be careful not to cut into the stitching.
<< Shape welt >>
1. Push the Welt to the wrong side of the Bodice through the slit. Turn it to the wrong side. Open and press the inside seams.
2. Fold and press the welt on the fold lines again. 3. Push the folded Pocket Welt to the right side. Baste the under edge.
4. Turn over the bodice. Stitch the pocket welt fabric and the seams. 5. Turn the bodice to the right side. Flip the Pocket welt and Blind stitch and fix the seamallowance of the both sides.
<< Fix pocket pouch pieces >>
Push the Pocket Pouch Back to the wrong side of the Bodice through the slit and press and shape the pocket open. Put it on the Pocket Pouch Front and fix the both pouch with pins. *Depend on your fabric thickness, the parts might not line up correctly. Put on naturally avoiding wrinkles or warps.
Double stitch the edge of the front and back Pocket Pouch pieces.
Turn the bodice to the right side. Top stitch the both sides of the Pocket Welt.
***** Voila! ******
