Hello!

I'm going by Bronwin on this site. Like it says in my description, my father wanted to name me Bronwin because it's Welsh, and apparently so is he, but my mother refused because she claimed it sounded too "elfy". And I can't say that I disagree, but I've always thought it would have made a really cool middle name.

Anyways.

I'm currently a student, and I live in Michigan, USA, which is a pretty great place!

I'm an optimist, a brunette, and am usually seen in some kind of skirt or dress. I'm a Roman Catholic, not good at any of the STEM subjects, wish I actually liked to write, and will always accept the offer of food. (or coffee). (hence my username)

Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.

He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"

So Dorothea's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.

Pray for Scott-Vincent Borba, who donated his 3.85 billion dollar fortune to Catholic charities in California. He is becoming a priest in the Diocese of Fresno May 23rd!

I'm glad this is still going around and I wanted to add a little about his story because I think we should keep praying for Scott as we get closer to his entrance into the priesthood

His story is so beautiful and I think a lot of people could really learn from it because he is not transformed overnight. He said he knew he was supposed to be a priest at ten but lost his way. He made money doing makeup and skincare, and then selling it, but every decade he became more unhappy. In his own words: “I was at an industry party and I remember I was very, very unhappy. I just felt empty and in truth I was empty."

So he started to pray for the first time since he was a teen.

“I said, ‘God, I know this is not life, where all you do is work and party and do that over and over again until you die, this is not the life that I think that you have made for me. But I can only change if you help me, I said, ‘Please, help me…I don’t want to do this [anymore].’”

He didn't give up his worldly life in one go. It was about two years of cleaning up his life. After that he decided to join seminary school.

In 2019 he said he drove up in an Aston Martin and a designer suit, and no one commented on it, which was different than the rooms he was used to moving in. He then said he felt called to sell that car after. Slowly, (He was a big car guy) he sold his car collection and every time he sold one he donated the proceeds to a Catholic charity. And he would ask "Lord is that enough? Haven't I given up enough?" And he wrestled with it, but in his heart he knew it wasn't. And when he sold the last luxury car and bought a used pick-up truck he actually got a response. It was firm: "You have to give it all up." So he did, he gave his fortune away.

Even then, after he gave all his wealth away he didn't give up control of his business which he said was even harder to give up then the wealth, the parties and the Hollywood lifestyle.

That was the hardest part! It was giving up control. Which I think so many people struggle with (myself included) he didn't give up his business ventures until late 2021, almost three years into seminary. It was one of the last things he did, but he had to. He couldn't have one foot in the world and one foot with God.

So if you feel like you're not transforming quick enough remember this is a slow journey. It is a lifelong journey. We are on a pilgrimage in this life and we are called to change. You are called to be transformed but we can't expect it to happen overnight and we can't beat ourselves up for it not happening overnight. We just have to keep going, and let the Lord work on our heart.
