Some non-bi people tend to be really weird and hypocritical when giving advice to bi folks on coming out day.

“Don’t come out if you don’t want to, but if you’re bi you should come out because that’s how you stop bi erasure.”

“Finding people of the same gender to date is hard and finding community is super hard, but if you’re bi you should have figured it out by now so you must not be trying hard enough, probably because you’re not really bi.”

“Don’t be ashamed to try new labels and change labels, but don’t label yourself as bi unless you are really sure that you are because everyone will think you’re a fake bi if you turn out to be wrong and you’ll put real lgbt people in danger.”

These are all snippets of “advice” I’ve read on blogs run by people who are not bi, they are incredibly dangerous and hurtful messages for bi people, I see new iterations of the same biphobic advice every year and it needs to be called out and stopped.

To all bi people on coming out day: the same rules apply to you as it does to everyone in the community, you don’t have to come out if you don’t want to or don’t feel safe doing so, you don’t have to prove anything by dating people or being visably part of lgbt community activities to be authentically bi, you can label however you want whether you are certain of your identity or not. Coming out is no less hard for you than anybody else, it’s no less dangerous and it’s no less important either.
