Turnstile Transcend Time + Space at Brooklyn Show

The Maryland natives took Brooklyn Steel by storm, as they always do. Emotions peaked as soon as Turnstile took the stage on May 6. The massive 1,800 capacity venue is the largest indoor venue we have seen them play, and despite them listed as a supporting act, no one could contain their excitement. Crowdsurfing and stage diving was a given and some even skated within the rambunctious crowd.

Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers Take Manhattan By Storm

Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace’s latest project Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers played an empowering set in New York City on April 18. The Devouring Mothers include Marc Jacob Hudson and Against Me! guitarist Atom Willard. Somehow, the songs off Bought to Rot are even more intimate and confessional than the average Against Me! track. The band played the playful diss song “I Hate Chicago,” “Manic Depression,” and “Two Coffins.”

The Story So Far Host Holiday Homecoming

The Bay Area natives effortlessly sold-out their Christmas gig on Dec. 22. It was their first show in Berkeley since their release of their latest LP Proper Dose, so it was a homecoming of sorts. The Story So Far was electric as always and even a few physical altercations in the rowdy crowd couldn’t sour the experience. Parker Cannon’s vocal agility on “Upside Down” is impressive. The crowd got the fan favorite slow song “Clairvoyant” and “Quicksand” and an encore.

The Story So Far Bring Proper Dose to New York City

The Bay Area natives made a sold-out stop in Times Square on Nov. 15. The Story So Far dropped their new album Proper Dose back in late September and embarked on their first U.S. tour in support of the LP. There was a buzz in the air when they took the stage in the 2,100 capacity venue. An interesting cast of characters crowdsurfed, including a fan dressed as Spider-Man and a girl in a baby blue cowboy hat.

Citizen Rock Sold Out Show in Times Square

An intense blizzard couldn’t keep fans from attending the Ohio band’s sold out show at the Playstation Theatre in Times Square on November 15. As always, Citizen incited plenty of crowdsurfing and passionate singalongs. They recently finished their European leg of their tour with The Story So Far.

Circa Survive Kick Off Amulet Tour in New York

The band is touring in support of 2017′s The Amulet and rocked New York City on October 29. The audience was ecstatic to see Circa Survive and their light show. In the spirit of Halloween, fans came in costume, some KISS face makeup and one as the Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty. The band began with the deceivingly slow-burning “Lustration” followed by a good dose of songs from the new album including the title track “The Amulet” and “Tunnel Vision.” Frontman Anthony Green’s soaring vocals and provocative stage presence captivated the hundreds of fans in attendance. We’ve seen Circa Survive live our fair share and each time they deliver a satisfyingly high energy set.

Slaughter Beach Dog Bring Their Easy-Going Rock to Rough Trade

Philadelphia-based quartet Slaughter Beach Dog played to an excited fan base Brooklyn’s Rough Trade on September 28. The band’s positive and playful vibes had everyone grinning. Slaughter Beach Dog played songs off their latest LP Birdie including “Gold and Green” and “Acolyte.” Frontman Jake Ewald took a second to address the white males in the room to support women and people of color. He asked everyone to support and take care of each other amid the tumultuous political and social climate. The band ended with an encore of “Fish Fry.”

Citizen’s Berkeley Show Well Worth the Wait

We caught up with Citizen at the band’s first appearance in Berkeley on July 15. They last played the San Francisco Bay Area in November and judging by the audience’s response, their fans were fervent and restless for the gig. Drummer Jake Duhaime said the band’s last to gigs in the Bay Area were some of his favorite shows to play. Three low key acts opened the show. The crowd quickly woke up and Citizen’s staunch supporters grew rambunctious when the headlining band geared up. The crowd demanded an encore and Citizen obliged. Our favorites from the night were “Jet”, “Fever Days” and “In the Middle of it All.”

Elder Brother’s Dazzling and Engaging Berkeley Performance 

Indie rock act Elder Brother celebrated the release of their latest record at 924 Gilman on June 10. Frontman Dan Rose’s vocals filled the Berkeley venue as the band jammed along. The band’s earnest songwriting and hazy, feel good style of music made for an enjoyable evening. Fans enjoyed tracks off the new record, Stay Inside, and old favorites. It was great to see fans’ enthusiastic response to Stay Inside, an album 3 years in the making.

Phoebe Bridgers Put on a Spellbinding Performance in San Francisco

Bottom of the Hill was at capacity – everyone grew quiet and time stood still as Phoebe Bridgers began her in in San Francisco set on April 27. In my eleven years of attending live music, I have never witnessed such an attentive crowd, with clear respect and admiration for the performer. Hardly anyone sang along, they jut enjoyed the music. Bridgers and her live band quickly captured her audience. 

She has drawn a devoted following for her indie rock music releases and her performance exemplified Bridgers at her best: serene and quietly confident. The night featured unexpected guests – Bridgers joined bandmate Harrison Whitford onstage for his solo opening act. The legendary singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters) joined Bridgers during her performance. Bridgers and Kozelek’s duets of “I Can’t Live Without My Mother’s Love” “You Missed My Heart” were deeply moving. In this era of auto-tune, I struggle to find artists that can truly deliver live as in their recorded work. Bridgers voice is truly unlike any other vocalist in the scene today.

Turnstile’s Otherworldly Performance in San Francisco

The hardcore quintet took the stage at their sold out show in San Francisco’s regal Great American Music Hall on April 19. Turnstile recently released Time & Space, a high energy full length packed with hits and fans were receptive to the new material. Attendants opened a mosh pit and many crowdsurfed, eagerly joining vocalist Brendan Yates on stage. Yates’ feverish energy has no off-button and the crowd’s elation was infectious. The band never slowed down for song after explosive song. The band launched into “Moon” led by Franz Lyons. Turnstile always brings their all.
