Three years ago, Luis Oscar Mora discovered CrossFit when looking to gain strength for martial arts and it didn’t take him long to fall in love with the sport. A member of CrossFit Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Mora is trained by head coach and box owner Luis Gerardo Garcia Romero. He’s been training under Romero for a year and a half. Proudly representing his country, Mora is wise beyond his years. Training two times per day, before and after school, CrossFit has become the center of his life. “He wants to start coaching," Romero said, "but I am pushing him to enjoy being a kid and an athlete first." Romero beamed with pride while reflecting on Mora's growth this season. “At these Games, I can see how focused he is. He is pacing himself,” Romero said. “I am so proud seeing him out there, I wiped away a tear when he signed his first score card.” Despite narrowly missing a podium position by 2 points for Teenage Boys 16-17 Division, Mora had an impressive rookie debut and will surely be a men’s individual athlete to watch for 2017. With the Mexican flag in tow, his cheering section in green at the Games could be heard chanting “Luis O” loud and proud. Mora's fans are loyal and the strategy for 2017 has been set. “We are aiming for him to reach the individuals next year and would like him to gain a scholarship to study Kinesiology in the US next year. The competition to push him doesn't exist in Mexico,” Romero explained.
