Because this idiot wanted a place within culture, but was unwilling to do the work required to find one. When will people finally realize that all these self-proclaimed critics of culture are not actually trying to challenge prejudice or liberate people from social constraints. What they really want is to build a cultural system in which they would feel comfortable existing. When you lack the courage to live the way you want and adapt on your own, you start wanting the world to reshape itself around your particular traits.
He admitted that he had never really been bullied by others, yet he was convinced that he had been bullied by culture. In other words, he was aware that he did not fit certain stereotypes that he clearly wanted to fit (otherwise he would not have cared about them), but instead of simply being himself or trying, as many people do, to find his own way of succeeding despite not fitting the mold, he chose to complain that he felt victimized by culture. So the supposedly independent, anti-cultural, great and terrible Adam ultimately admits that he was deeply troubled by his inability to live up to the very cultural ideals he claimed to reject? He hated culture because he wanted to belong to it, but he was too weak-willed to make the effort. Instead of adapting and making use of the help that was offered to him, he preferred to push the situation to its absolute breaking point.
Please don't tell me about how much he suffered. His problem was not autism or anxiety. His problem was a lack of will to take responsibility for his own life
