my blog might not show up the pictures i have to illustrate this tutorial as my blog width is very small, but you can right click and open them in a new tab if it’s really that bad for you to see (which i really hope it isn’t omfg).
okay, for starters, you wanna have your blank canvas type thing on photoshop. typically i use these settings - just because it’s the size of the tumblr header (or it was the last time i checked sHRUGS) and the rest of the thing i don’t really mess with tbH. it might be a good idea to put it as transparent like i did, but i’m not sure if that’ll affect the outcome afterwards so?? shrugs.
anyway, after you have your new canvas opened on photoshop, you wanna find a transparent image of your muse/muses faceclaim/fanart of your muse that you think you could work with (i’m just gonna use the one i used for my cry promo for convenience! [ART CREDIT HERE BY THE WAY!] ) and you should paste it onto the thing. if your picture has one solid colour for a background, there is a transparent tool HERE that might be useful to you!
i made a new layer and filled it in with a colour for a background and made sure that this layer was beneath the art of cry, and it looks like this:
a bit bland and boring, right? well. here’s the fun (AND DIFFICULT AND TIME CONSUMING) part. adding in textures, overlays, and other cool stuff like that! but there is one thing that you’ll need to make sure before you can do this. you’ll need to look up on google/deviantart ( i looked it up on deviantart bc DAYUM there was some fucking nice brushes on there. that’s where i got my brushes i use on my themes and promos, which i have mentioned at my credits page, for my themes and promos i’ll usually only use these brushes as i really like them and they way they look.) and find yourself a bunch of nice brushes / textures that you think works well and will look good!
as for how to install brushes into photoshop - there is a tutorial here!
at first i just mess around with the shapes and patterns, and see what looks cool with the colour scheme, or see what actually looks good, and EVENTUALLY i’ll piece something together that looks like this:
now from here on out i mess about with the settings, for example, changing the mode of things to see what looks best in the little layer settings thing on the side - THIS THING:
or changing opacity of things, adding photos as an overlay using a clipping mask (which looks reALLY RAD JUST FYI), or by adding a blurry drop shadow to things. basically, by fucking about and seeing what looks good.
by this point i usually end up adding way more to the promo than what i should, and end up with something like this:
and from here on out i add text and a dotted overlay thing, and make the bottom of the promo look like it’s been ripped and add a drop shadow, then i’m done!
i hope this possibly helped you out, and please feel free to use the brushes i linked as they are absolutely fantastic for when i make my promos/themes!also idk what happened to the quality of the screenshots i took but something happened, rip.
