Ningen by William 巴特尔 Bao
Early accounts sourced from a Japanese internet forum circa 2007- The Ningen. A gigantic man shaped whale like creature that stalks the frigid waters of the South Pole. First to be sighted in the early 2000s by Japanese whaling ships illegally hunting in the Antarctic water. For a creature so large it seems to be extremely skilled at evading human eyes. Some blurry evidence from underwater cameras hinted at its existence from time to time but researchers still lack any concrete evidence. The creature’s white beluga like skin tone suggests it evades detection by camouflaging with giant underwater icebergs, perhaps even pretends to be chunks of floating icebergs, making the search for the Ningen’s illusive figure even more difficult in an already harsh environment.

day 28: cryptid / plant / spirit 🌵🌕🦉 // gouache on hot press
The Cactus Cat is said to live in the Sonoran Desert, protecting the tree-like saguaro cactus from anyone who would take too much or hurt them in any way. Its spiked, barbed tail leaves welts and scrapes, but if you respect the cacti, you’ll be safe. The Cactus Cat means no harm.

stop calling the mishibijiw (mishipeshu) a cryptid. stop calling thunderbirds cryptids. stop calling popular native spirits and creatures cryptids for the love of fucking god. ESPECIALLY the ones I know you're thinking about when you read this post. you know the one. don't do it.
NINGEN
A Ningen of sorts, though the scale is very exaggerated in this piece. Hope you enjoy!
Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 24 — Cactus Cat
The Cactus Cat is a creature from American folklore. Cowboys and pioneers in the early 19th century reported encountering this strange creature in California, New Mexico, Nevada, and other areas of the southwestern US. It was described as a bobcat-like animal covered in sharp spines, having a tail with cacti-like branches, and with a sharp bone or barb protruding from each foreleg which it used to slash open cacti. It would wait for the exposed juice to ferment before partaking of it and becoming intoxicated.
