Game Review: Jack the Ripper Card Game
Something of a first for the blog, a review on an actual game rather than an rpg adventure! The subject of this particular post? A most interesting little card game by Crypt Monkey Studios (find more of their stuff here), Jack the Ripper!
Disclaimer: I got this for free, for the purposes of review! That said I try my best to be fair and unbiased. If I see something I don’t like I point it out!
An assortment of cards, (Ripper Event, Character and Item)
Some Deluxe set accessories (and the sweet bag it came in)
Concept!
So the basic premise of the game is simple, each player is given a character card which they conceal until some effect allows or forces otherwise. Most will be some noble fop, but one will be Jack (yes the extra murderous legendary Jack). No one knows who is who so you have to survive the hidden murderer, powerful at the end of round random events and through it all try to eliminate the killer! The goal as a whole is a nice casual game to play before an rpg session or to just fill some time.
Execution!
How well does it do that however? Well I think it meets it goal! Through a clever system of item, special items, and weapon cards you find yourself with some tactical options. Ripper Events, special cards drawn after everyone’s turn that cause something murdery and generally bad stuff to happen to said noble fops, also add a layer to plan around. Jack even gets an extra benefit if he reveals himself, though this of course can lead to his very quick death as everyone focus fires. So that gives a nice nugget of tactic meat.
So basically the main rules are short, you can play one item or weapon card a turn (oh and you can’t pass your turn without playing a card if you happen to have a weapon on you). Special Items throw an element of surprise into your tactics too, they’re able to be played during anyone’s turn and don’t count against your limit. They usually do something cool like stop damage, or a little bit of heal.
Artwork!
Okay this section is a sudden turn from rules talk, but I think it is important! Quite simply the cards have good artwork, in my opinion. The design of the cards, accessories, etc all fit together nicely, cool little flavor texts are even stuck on the bottoms of cards.
Criticisms?
Alright, alright, I’ve gushed all over this thing so you’re all probably wondering what are the cons, right? Well for me, and my groups, we thought it needed a little more stuff. It has a nice arrangement of cards mind you, and enough Ripper Events to keep one guessing, but I think an expansion would definitely give it a bit more kick! (Personally if I had to choose what got an expansion it would probably be the Ripper Events, I really love that whole system!)
Final Verdict!
Hah, dramatic heading! Anyway it is a good game, it meets its stated goal of some casual fun before a session, and it looks cool. It could do with a bit more content in the long run.
Rating 4/5
TLDR; It’s fun, but could benefit from expansions!
Where You Can Get It!
If you want to check out the game, find em here! Oh and for those at the library reading, I was wrong it is available for sale now, misread some older stuff on their website (I must’ve been half asleep still with no caffeine hah)!
Thanks Iron Emblem Gaming!

GURPS Encounters: The Old Spook House on Riley Hill
First post of the new blog series, GURPS Encounters, aiming to make flavorful locales with a main hook and some inspiring story fluff besides! Some weeks will focus more on the location, others the events relating to them. I’ll try to get at least one npc statted up each post. This first one is the…
Old Spook House on Riley Hill
For years the legend has been told, a terrible storm in the sixties, and ever since it has been active with a quirky spirit. No one is real sure who the ghost is, but the spirit is terrible at haunting. Appearing as an adorable vaguely humanoid sheet of white mist, very similar to Halloween decorations. Most don’t believe in the tale, but those that do, mainly children, hang out quite a bit here in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the Spook.
Key Features: Burnt out old single floor house on Riley Hill (fits well in any suburban environment, haunted by a mysterious tiny spirit, called affectionately the Spook.
House Description
At one point a pretty nice suburban one floor house. Set up a lush hill, and flattened top of course, a covered porch, once pristine white paint and red shingle roof. Now sagging, faded, and tattered.
Yard: Wild and unkempt, as one would expect with an abandoned house. Bits of rubble still pokes out from the ground here and there.
Room 1 (Covered Porch): Now huge holes are visible in the covered porch, the front door the only really interesting thing here. Solid oak, though badly charred, topped off with a large ornate knocker shaped like a fist holding a ring.
Room 2 (Parlor): Where the family used to mingle and relax. A large pile of rubble is here, beams and the like. The local children leave ‘offerings’ for the Spook here, candy, toys, just what kids think of as necessary.
Room 3 (Bedroom): The home really only has one bedroom, so whoever lived here was quite cramped, or there wasn’t very many of them. The corner of this room is sagging, the sky partially visible through here.
Room 4 (Master Bath): At one point this was the bathroom, and quite a lavish bathroom at that. With a large clawed bathtub in the corner, huge sink with vanity mirror, and plenty of closest space. The main here is collapsed, able to walk from here to the Parlor.
Room 5 (Kitchen/Dining): A few old style appliances and kitchen necessities are in here. All burnt quite badly of course. This room’s wall is sagging as well.
Spook, the Wannabe Ghost
No one is real sure who this ghost was, or what it was. The thing appears mostly like what kids think of when they think ghost. A misty white sheet that floats, occasionally with visible arms. Spook tries very hard to be scary but well, it is tiny, has a high pitched voice, and is quite easily scared itself. Much of this is purposefully done though, the Spook likes having fun with the children.
Supposedly those kids fleeing from abusive parents or other dangerous people speak of a terrible rage in the creature, some tormentors have just completely disappeared. At no real lose to the neighborhood.

What is the Spook?
(While the exact nature of the Spook is left up to you, the following is a suggestion.)
Though it is true that the “Spook House” burnt in the early sixties, strangely enough the legends date back before that. With nearly every child raised on the property reporting, “A floating sheet, glowing white, of such a friendly nature.” Over the years many have disappeared on the property, mostly drunks rumored to be abusive. Seemingly the Spook has been a staunch protector for decades.
Further digging reveals that the original owner of the property was one, William H. Mares, in 1894. Said to have been a foremost occultist, as well as a family man. Six years after construction a terrible fire started, William survived, however his pet dog did not. The dog gave up its’ own life to save the children’s. Many newspapers say that William had a special funeral on the property before leaving, infusing the land with Spook’s protective nature.
It was mostly quiet, just subtle help, until another fire struck. That riled the spirit back up, this time the Spook won’t go back to rest, it refuses to let another get hurt on the property again!
Hook: A Helping….TK?
Hunting some beast preying upon the suburbs the pcs decided to strategically flee, seeing an abandoned house, with not too many curious civvies they bunker down. With the beast still on their tails. Lucky for them they found the Spook House, when the terrible thing in the night inevitably busts through the wards to feast upon the wounded and exhausted party members, the Spook butts in! Giving the pcs some much need combat support, or keeping the creatures off a helpless party member. Afterwards the pcs may even learn the history of the Spook, from the creature itself!
(I heartily recommend not having this encounter steal the party’s glory, just minor help, enough where they get a better chance but not so much where they were passive viewers.)

And even if you’re not a Pathfinder AP subscriber, you can gen the FREE Strange Aeons Player’s Guide right here!
Quoting myself from the Paizo blog from a few days back:
“I wrote it on something of a binge after finishing my novel, Pathfinder Tales: Bloodbound (also set in Ustalav), and the first volume of Hell’s Vengeance, “The Hellfire Compact.” As a result, “In Search of Sanity” features as few subtle nods to both. I won’t give away too much, but if you’re interested in learning more about Ustalav’s royal accusers or about the tribulations of Longacre’s Lieklan family, the first Strange Aeons has more to say.
“You’ll also have the chance to join an asylum revolt, surf a blood tsunami, and give a ghoul a shower.
“I seem to remember that some Lovecrafty stuff happens too.
“Y'all like bholes, right?“
Terrible things. They’re waiting for you.

Jack the Ripper
It's finally here! The Jack the Ripper game site is open to the public and we couldn't be more excited. And on Halloween day! What a perfect time to open Jack's site! It has been quite a journey to get to this point and we have a few more miles to travel but we are getting there. And now, you guys can get involved too and let us know what you think, what you'd like to know, and whether or not these ideas sound exciting to you too. How It Started Jack the Ripper is a game that I have had to honor of building with my friends Anthony Morris, John Watson, and James Paul Gaugh. We've worked hard to get the game to this point and it has been a labor of love. I'm grateful that the guys have trusted Crypt Monkey Studios to run with this project and see just how far we can take it. With the help of you gamers out there, I'm sure we'll take it far. State of the Game Currently Jack the Ripper, or JtR, is nearing the end of beta testing. We have less than a handful of game dynamics to put to the test and, barring any horrible results from that testing, the game itself will be done then. You'll notice on the JtR home page that we're also in the artwork phase, so lots of exciting things going on for Jack at the moment. What's Next? In anticipation of having Jack production ready, we'd like to have at least one pre-release event. JtR designer James Paul Gaugh reminded us a few weeks ago that the Geekway to the West board game convention isn't far off. It just makes sense that we should start out with a gaming convention local to St. Louis, so we have proposed our preview event to the good folks at Geekway to the West and we'll find out soon what their thoughts on the event are. More on that later! Scraps As with all Crypt Monkey Studios games, Jack the Ripper will have its own set of Scraps. The outlines currently discussed include thirteen Scraps for each character in JtR. So we can look forward to at least sixty-five Scraps, more if the interest is there after the first set of stories has been told. Already you can go to the Scraps section and read the first two JtR Scraps. As always, we suggest you read The Lead-In story to the game first so you have some starting context for the rest of the Scraps. Now that we have user accounts, you can create an account to gain the ability to leave comments on Scraps and blog posts. And please do! We want to hear from you! We Need You! As with all great adventures, it's a lot more fun with a group. We're doing what we can to come up with a game that gamers like ourselves will enjoy but we need your input. So don't hesitate to speak up in comments for our blog posts and Scraps and even by contacting us with your thoughts and questions. We're listening, you just have to speak up. Happy Gaming!

Game Findr KickStarter
We here at Crypt Monkey Studios are very excited about a new app called Game Findr that is picking up steam over at Kickstarter right now. Like a handful of magic beans, we tossed our meager couch change into the can and hope that, as a result, there will be a new world order in the way we all find our games. Game Findr is an app that lets you find table top games in your area or bring other players to your table by "sending up a flare". No more driving to the game store hoping that you can grab a seat, you'll know before you ever leave your house. According to the super passionate brain-daddy of Game Findr, Jeremy Hambly, there is already a working version of the app. The Kickstarter they are running is intended to fund the addition of some new features like feedback on other players and an LGS finder. They are also going to divvy up some of those funds for marketing costs in order to boost the release of this free app. That's very important because the more people that jump in with Game Findr, the easier it will be to find a game. Hey, it's a real life LFG so you've got to have people out there listening, right! I personally can't wait to use Game Findr to go out and find a group in the wild to play a Crypt Monkey game with! And right out of the box they are already supporting a ton of other games. If this sounds interesting to you too, dig some change out of your own couch cache and head over to Kickstarter to check them out.
PLEASE BACK THIS GUYS!!! GameFindr-Free App Locates Players For TCG & Tabletop Games - Free Iphone & Android App Makes Finding Gamers in Your Area For MTG, HeroClix, D&D, Warhammer, Yu-Gi-Oh, and More - http://kck.st/1x5IZYK
We backed this app and we’re really excited to see how it will help gamers all over the world.
