Qtum had reported the launch date on Twitter on Jan. 31, with a link to a countdown to Feb. 2. However, Friday, the day of the launch, the countdown was replaced with a link to the China National Space Administration website’s press release on the successful launch of the Zhangheng-1 satellite. Qtum and Blockchain were not mentioned in the press release. Users on the r/Qtum subreddit expressed confusion over the disappearance of the website countdown, asking for more information about the success of the launch. Qtum’s Telegram channel had posted a YouTube video of a satellite launch today, with subtitles overlaid saying it was footage of the “first Qtum POS node in space today.” Qtum’s DApps are unique from those based on Ethereum because the platform uses the Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) Blockchain model, enabling more lightweight smart contract interactions with mobile and IoT programs. Qtum is also partners with Spacechain, a space exploration initiative aimed at building an open source satellite network. Storing data in outer space would eliminate potential problems with government regulation. In an interview with Tech in Asia in November 2017, Zheng Zuo, the CEO of Spacechain, had spoken about the projected February 2018 launch date of a Cubesats Spacechain satellite running on a Qtum network. Freightwaves, a cargo shipping news organization, reported that FedEx had begun developing a set of industry standards for blockchain usage as part of the BiTA. The company, which joined the organization as a founding member, has already begun testing some blockchain platforms. The Cyberpolice unit also noted the need to regulate cryptos “as soon as possible”. Ukrainian parliament is yet to adopt new legislation amid mounting calls from other institutions to regulate cryptocurrencies.

It is necessary to regulate at legislative level all matters pertaining to the use of cryptocurrencies, Sergei Demedyuk, head of the Cyberpolice department, said in a statement quoted by local media. In his opinion, regulations should be adopted as soon as possible. He also pointed to the need to amend the law in order to tax crypto related transactions. The rules of operating cryptocurrency exchanges have to be determined, too, he insisted.

If authorities are unable to regulate the status of cryptos in the near future the state should officially ban their circulation, the National Policerepresentative said. Then “everyone will know that by buying and selling cryptocurrency in Ukraine they risk losing their financial investments irrevocably, in the absence of any protection or compensation”, Demedyuk warned.

The high-ranking police official noted, however, that Ukraine’s Cyberpolice force was supportive of efforts to legalize cryptocurrencies and crypto mining in the country, despite concerns that their circulation might be “based on the same foundations as financial pyramids”. Cash App is a peer-to-peer payment system from Square that allows people to pay each other directly and quickly. This new update has been in trial mode for select users over several months and is now available to the public. Users will have access to bitcoin trading directly in the app with no additional fees being added by Square. Transactions fees will be set at a mid-market price that is averaged from various exchanges. Users are limited to purchases of up to $10,000 worth of bitcoin per week. The new feature is available to all Square customers except for those in New York, Georgia, Hawaii and Wyoming. For people new to bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading, the process is simplified by Square as they are the ones holding on to your bitcoin and executing the transactions: the bitcoin is tied to your Cash App account, not your device. While Square has a long history of secure transactions, this centralized system of holding users’ private keys is not an ideal security practice (see the recent Coincheck hack), so users will have to consider whether they want to trade security for ease of use. The company plans to expand its cryptocurrency operations in Hong Kong and Luxembourg next, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The move is part of Line’s expansion into financial services. The firm established a new company, Line Financial Corporation, as a follow-up to Line Pay and to further reinforce its position in the financial business domain.

Line Pay is a mobile money transfer and payment service available on the Line messaging app since 2014. The company claims 40 million registered users and a global annual transaction volume exceeding JPY 450 billion (US$4.14 billion). The new company will create and provide a variety of financial services including a cryptocurrency exchange platform, loans, and insurance, all from the Line messaging app, Line Corporation announced on Wednesday.

But some services may be offered as a stand-alone brand, sources told Bloomberg. The insurance business will focus on resale, centered initially on the Japanese market where commissions are high.

Line is also considering applications of blockchain technology in countries with underdeveloped financial infrastructure to enable services such as the ability to pay utility bills via mobile phone. “Line hopes to become a leader in the fintech industry as the world moves increasingly towards a cashless wallet-less society,” the company said.

With around 200 million monthly users, Line’s entry into the cryptocurrency business could significantly increase awareness and adoption. In comparison, Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has about 13 million users.
