fish out of water (ffxiv au)
Rean wrapped his arms around Jusis, pulling him close against his chest. âGigantsharks? I never heard of those,â Rean said sheepishly. Even though Rean considered himself a good fisherman, it embarrassed him how many fish left that he still have yet to see. It seemed that every time he went out to fish, he simply ended up with a surplus of fish that he had seen before, with only one or two species new to him.
Rean beckoned Badeaux over, who gladly shuffled his way over to him. Rean let Jusis gently slide off of his grasp, allowing him to get up and walk over to the many bags that lined Badeaux. It surprised him how much time it took for him to find a simple fishing rod â it seemed that everything was filled to the brim with random materials he had uncovered from wandering monsters: meats, plants, scales, assorted body partsâŠ
âFound it!â Rean exclaimed. He pulled out a long, blue rod from one of the pockets, his eyes twinkling with triumph. In comparison to Jusisâ rod, however, Rean couldnât help but notice that his Halcyon Rod was free of any scratches or dents. He knew that Jusis had a love for crafting and gathering, but he didnât think that Jusis would be that dedicated. After all, the first time they went out fishing, Jusis would drop his rod after a few catches and switch to weaving instead. Nevertheless, it warmed Reanâs heart to know that Jusis now had a newfound love for fishing.
âUhâŠJusis?â Rean began, âW-What kind of bait am I supposed to use anywayâŠ?â In a shocking twist of fate, Rean found that he only had a few crayballs with him. Oh, the sweet irony, Rean thought to himself. âEr, think you can spare some bait tooâŠ?â He added with a chuckle.
Jusis glanced over at Rean struggling not to drop the crayfish balls he was cupping in his hands. That particular bait couldnât be used in this location to begin with, but neither that nor the fact that Rean had forgotten the right bait would be enough to dampen Jusisâs mood. Even though he tried to keep his tail still, he still couldnât help himself from letting its tip flit back in forth in happiness that Rean was here to join him fishing now. It was rather lonely, casting off of the dock by himself.
âYou use a floating minnow lure in hopes of catching a harbor herring, which is then used as the following bait to mooch the Gigantshark,â Jusis explained, reeling in his own empty lure before he started to dig around in the makeshift tackle box heâd made for himself out of some steel rivets and ingots, boar leather, and linen yarn. One would think that the fishing guild would sell some sort of contraption to keep bait and lures in, but alas, that would be too convenient.
âYouâre in luck, because I happen to have three on hand right now that I crafted earlier this week,â Jusis began, pulling out one of the floating minnows. âI was thinking of selling the extras on the market board, but you can have one.â He held it out for Rean to take, and judging by the way its sharp steel points glinted brightly with a flash, it seemed like the sun had come back out. Perhaps the weather would be more favorable to land a catch now.
