the summer heat isn't kind to Niners in the FFXIV AU😔

Some FFXIV AU Atash + Emmrich fluff, as I reflect on Sad Things.

I'm back from a week in CA for my grandmother's funeral. It was a welcome break, as my grandma would want it to be.

It was also really hard to leave again. It was the first time all of my siblings (ALL 9 OF US) were in one place in... like, what, a decade? I know for a fact that it was the first time I had seen my brother in six years, at least. We're close, we talk all the time and stream games together, yet we haven't actually physically been in the same room in all that time.

I didn't realize how much I had missed everyone until I was there with them again - mom, dad, all 8 sisters and 1 brother, nieces and nephews who last I saw were barely past toddler age now in their teens... As I was going through the airport travelling back to Scotland, I felt something I hadn't felt in years, not since I was a little baby college student living on my own for the first time - that feeling of aching, intense grief, feeling almost sick, wanting to just burst into tears right there, at seeing my parents drive off and leave me on my own. I miss my family so much. I miss my home. I miss not being on my own.

But even if I did go back now, the past is past. It will never be what it was. My country is rapidly becoming more and more dangerous for people like me, even as privileged as I am. My family isn't likely to get together again for another decade, at least. And I'm safer here, even if I'm alone. For now. So. Time to finish this PhD, and finally get the chance to build something real here in Scotland. And maybe I should text my siblings more often. :)
