Racism in the FFXIV community

In light of recent events regarding the protests, BLM, and police brutality, I feel obligated to at least share something that’s been bothering me for quite some time. Even though I’ve experienced racism my entire life as a result of being Asian American, everything I’ve suffered pales in comparison to the daily barrage of horrific violence and abuse black people face on a daily basis.

For those who’ve been following me here on tumblr for years, you all know I’m no stranger to re-blogging topics regarding sexism, trans rights, abuse, and other social issues that are important to me. This stuff rarely caused me to lose followers, and it gave me confidence in the people who were regularly watching and supporting me. However, something alarming happened…

A while back, I re-blogged a friend’s post that merely stated “I hate Nazis.” and I expected I’d possibly lose one or two followers as a result. Instead, to my abject horror, I actually lost over twenty.

Think about that for a minute.

Racism is a very real and rampant problem, even here on social media within the FFXIV community we’re a part of. The people who un-followed me over “I hate Nazis.” are the same people who feign support of various social issues ranging from LGBT+ rights to feminism, but they drew the line at caring about black lives. “I hate Nazis” was enough to offend them into un-following me.

After I post this, I expect to lose even more followers, and I’m going to be happy to lose them.
