“At this point, I don’t think the universe wants me to finish college. It’s always something.” Or maybe it was wishful thinking. Annie would have much preferred that fate step in and decide a chunk of her life instead of having to go through constant uncertainty in her choices, or second-guessing herself. Granted, her latest reason for leaving campus was because of worry for her loved ones back in Shrike, but still. She sat up on her bed and couldn’t help but huff a bit. “Enough of me moping about college for the hundreth time… What do you think? Is it better to have something bigger than yourself decide your life, or would you rather have total freedom? I can see pros and cons to both, honestly. It’s kinda hard to decide.”

― lydia was listening along with all the words that annie was saying, though their attention seemed to be on the magazine in their hands. reading along had become so mind numbing that lydia was no longer picking up anything they were looking at. “this, my friend,” they started, closing the magazine’s glossy cover before tossing it to the side with the others they had stopped reading. “is why i didn’t even try to get into college.” lydia confessed with a groan. the whole having your life planned out for you was something lydia never agreed with. they figured you’d make it up as you went along. “you’re asking the wrong person that question, annie. i’m a total go with the flow.” they offered with a half smirk.

It wasn’t like Jesse wanted to be at the hospital in the first place. Hell. Even when he probably needed to go to the hospital he would barely ever really do it. The whole place was way too sterile and it smelled...off. It was one of those places where bad vibes just tended to swirl around if you believed in that stuff. Maybe he did.

It still felt wrong to leave when everywhere he looked, there seemed to be someone he knew from the mall filtering in and out. Visiting or going home looking exhausted. He was feeling pretty beat himself. Jesse never found it easy to sleep when the killers decided to show themselves around. So he was a little paranoid. Someone could sue him over it.

At least he could smoke in somewhat peace as he decided what to do. Maybe he could go to the gift shop and get some snacks for Nick. But he wasn’t even sure if that was the right thing to do. Jesse almost jumped out of his skin when he noticed something move out of the corner of his eye. “Shit,” he turned his head quick as he started to cough. “Jesus, you scared the fuck out of me.”

― fully aware of those people that were injured, lydia had found themselves at the hospital. they knew some people were badly hurt but who was was another story. they had only gotten so much out of sparrow before lydia had made them stop. they didn't want their friend to suffer anymore right now and was supposed to be a safe place for them to be. jumping at the sound of the curse word made lydia almost drop the bag they were holding. it was so strange to be put back on edge like this once more. glancing towards the person before sighing. "fuck, you scared me." they cursed out while shaking their head, hands also shaking. it was so strange that everything right now was going to make lydia worried. "i brought you some stuff." they confessed, shaking hands holding out the one bag, soft smile on their face. "you know, for you and nick. kind of as thanks for sparrow. keeping my best friend alive and all."

lydia had, of course, been her first call as soon as she had been cleared by the police. she hadn’t stopped shaking yet by the time she’d arrived on their doorstep, clothes still covered in blood. none of it hers, but she kind of wished it was. dakota had died to protect her, and she was going to be dead before her first grey hair anyway. it wasn’t fair. none of this was fair. hot, painful tears prickled behind her eyes as she knocked, knowing it wouldn’t take long before she was in her best friend’s arms. 

― lydia couldn’t contain the deep sighs that kept falling from their lips, eyes trained to the floor. they sat at the kitchen table but their chair was pushed so far away from the table that it would be hard to actually use it if they even wanted to. it was easier this way that as soon as they heard a knock lydia could be up at at that door in a moments notice. their hands were resting on their knees, nails digging into their skin enough to leave marks. the area around lydia’s finger tips was turning red but they did not care even a little right now. 

as soon as the knock echoed around the room, the chair crashed to the floor with the force of lydia rushing to their feet. it wasn’t even a minute later when the door flew open. their eyes trained to the person in front of them before sighing. arms rushing out to wrap around their body and hold them closer. lydia could actually feel their eyes filling with tears. they were so worried when sparrow had called and wanted nothing more than to make sure that their friend was okay.

it was near closing time and mary was still staring face to face with the broken washing machine. she let out a huff, blowing her bangs off her forehead before the sprawled messily across her face. her hands started to shake as she reached out to press the buttons, hoping the right combination of button mashing would make the machine run. working in the mall this late made her nervous, when she applied for a laundromat she never thought her life would be at risk. 

mary crossed her arms and pressed them tightly against her chest to hide her panicked shaking. “god, i will not hear the end of it from opening shift if i leave this broken.” she attempted a laugh to keep herself in calm spirits. “happen to know a washing machine repairman wandering the area this late?” mary asked, only half joking.

─ lydia turned to look at the other, pausing in the book they had been flipping through. it wasn’t like being at the mall this late was one of the best things in the world, but it was not that busy. lydia could even leave their clothes alone and nobody would steal them. “i can barely fix my coffee machine at home.” they confessed with a shrug before glancing back at the book. “shouldn’t you have like a list of people that you can call at times like these??”

“gah— shit.” max muttered under his breath as the string snapped on the bass guitar he was fixing out in the mall courtyard. he’d started in the back room of key of reason, but then he got that flustered hot and sweaty feeling and had to move somewhere else to finish. he was picking away at a basket of french fries as he tried to get the hand-me-down instrument back in good shape for a customer who needed it fixed. clearly, it was in a worse state than max anticipated. 

he finally set the instrument aside and took a deep breath, rubbing his hands over his eyes as he heard footsteps approach. “i think today might be the day i throw in the towel. this bass is utter shit.” he spoke into his hands, still not looking up.

─ lydia couldn’t help chuckling at the comment before rolling their eyes. it wasn’t like they hadn’t done the exact same thing. often giving up when things got to this exact same point. “and here i was gonna by that bass from you once you fixed it.” they offered with a chuckle and shrug of the shoulders.

“Oh man”, the blonde grumbled as she began picking up the basket of pre made bouquets. It was the third time this week someone had appeared to kick it over, and she couldn’t fathom why. “Who hates flowers this much to just kick them over on a daily basis?”

─ lydia couldn’t hold back the groan that escaped from their lips as they listened to the other talk. rolling their eyes as the other spoke out, fixing the flowers. “maybe you should get security up here, girl.” lydia spoke out before moving to get out of their way. they didn’t have to be at work for another couple hours so spending their time with elise.

sawyer sauntered up to the person browsing in the stacks, and gave a little spin before he actually approached them—mostly because he was full of energy and a zest for life that people often found particularly annoying. sawyer never let that bother him, however. he didn’t care about being annoying so much as he cared about being kind. “let me guess—you’re looking for the new stephen king.” he paused. “no, no, you strike me as someone who’s more into classics. catcher in the rye, maybe? the jane austens are right over there, too.” he paused. “wait! i’ve got it.” he dipped into another row of shelves before popping back up like an overenthusiastic stuffed animal in a game of whack-a-mole. “toni morrison’s new book. fresh off the presses, like, three months ago.” he held it out. “try it. i read it in, like, three days, it’s awesome.” 

─ they turned the moment that lydia heard the voice call out to them, offering to help them find the book that was top of their reading list. it didn't help the small smirk moving over their painted lips, nod causing the volumanic hair to bounce ever so slightly. "close but nope." lydia confessed with a soft chuckle as they moved to lean back against the shelves that were behind them. "postcards from the edge." lydia confessed pushing off the shelves once more before offering a small smile.
