Oh. This feels. Grim.

Just say yes.... If you say yes, but someone holds power over you, or is commanding/manipulating you to, it’s not very much of a free-willed yes, is it? Especially if you feel you can’t say no?

Now, I know it's been a while, but... um. Technically didn't Jasper also put Lapis in that jail cell thing? So Jasper has also not been very good to her either? Conveniently leaving that out for the sake of getting to fuse, I guess.

Can you even coerce someone to fuse if they don’t want to? Consent, or at least some kind of agreement, seems essential to fusion, if the episode where Connie and Steven fuse taught us anything. And also even with Stronger Than You, if you think of it all as a conversation. If you consider fusion can be a metaphor for relationships, that makes sense to me. The idea of relationships as ongoing conversations... in all sorts of relationships, we navigate consent/conversations.

Even Opal or Alexandrite, who unfused quickly when a disagreement happened - I could interpret that, on some level, as revoking consent to being in the fusion (which of course is okay to do at any point, for whatever reason). I’d say maybe even Sugilite became stressful once clear boundaries between Garnet and Amethyst started breaking down (”losing” themselves, as it was put in the episode, I think), but I’m not sure if that’s an interpretation that makes a lot of sense.

Lapis is definitely in a place where she is very susceptible to manipulation. She doesn’t feel like she has any control over her situation, if her chat with Steven was any indication. That definitely makes it easier to take advantage of someone. And if she feels like she doesn't have power, it's possible any tiny chance of getting control (or the perception of getting control) could be very tempting.

But I think there are other ways out here. She still has agency, which Steven is trying to remind her, in his own way. Even if she (perhaps understandably) feels she doesn’t. Fusing with Jasper is one option, but she doesn’t have to take it. She literally just could say fuck you all, I’m gonna head out, and be on her way.

Fuck dude, idk... This is going down a bad path rather quickly.

this is 100% on disney and not the owl house crew but man that montage at the beginning made me so sad we didn’t get a full season… like u can tell each little bit was supposed to be (or could have been) its own episode

settling in at the noceda household… rebuilding the old house in the woods… luz coming out to her mom… going back to school (and replacing vee, who was replacing luz and built her own friend group in that time, so now it’s like she’s a different person???) and learning about the wittebanes… hunter’s haircut/ identity crisis… tbh probably would have had an episode where they deal w the museum guy again too… even just more slice of life stuff like learning about the human realm the way luz got to learn about the boiling isles……

it was a great episode but man. imagine if we had gotten to see everything in its full glory. fuck u mouse

I still think it’s hilarious how in The Owl House while you’re watching you cannot help but wonder that what might be the motivation of the villain and what tragic backstory turned him into what he is and then the show is just like: You see, he’s a white christian man.

And then it’s just like, yep that checks out.

But genuinely, I really like that, because obvioulsy yes, there is a nuanced backstory there that you can read from history books if one wants to, about calvinist predestination christian doctrine and Britain’s burgeoining colonial ambitions and the crumbling of catholic hegemony creating violent and paranoid backlashes in the form of extreme european christian sects and the newly formed european identity starting to create it’s doctrine of racial hierarchies, which all come together to create a man like Philip Wittebane without any tragic backstories needed.

But the cartoon witches don’t know that. To them Belos is an irrational evil, someone who is evil just for the sake of being evil. And I do love the concept of that, a villain whose motives are apparant only to the audience because we have the resources to understand 17th century british colonial and religious politics, but for the characters in the show his motives are impossible to decipher. I love that. More shows should play around with that.
