From the degree show 2017: Onespacemedia’s James Dellar with graphic design student Angela Padilla, who won The Onespacemedia Digital Media Award. This is awarded by Onespacemedia to the student who has shown the most innovative and imaginative approach to working with digital media. 

Angela’s was a speculative research project connecting sacred geometry and geometric patterns made by natural forces. By using cymatics (vibrational phenomena, in which grains placed upon a surface vibrating at a specific frequency will automatically form themselves into complex patterns), Angela then used digital media to produce a collection of decorative elements.

From the degree show 2017: CPL’s Kevin Reed with graphic design student Shannon Quirke, who won The CPL Award for Creativity. This is awarded by CPL to the student whose creative endeavours represent significant risk-taking, informed by a process of speculative, adventurous and ambitious thinking. 

Shannon’s speculative graphic arts project is concerned with identity, and how we feel about our bodies. Shannon delved into the world of confessional online forums, in which people talk about their attitude to their own body parts, and particularly the sexual organs, which naturally generate the most complex feelings. The results of this research were gathered into large-format posters that used found and newly-made imagery, coupled with textual material gleaned from the forums.

From the degree show 2017: BAAM’s Dave Jabbie with graphic design student Ryan Mills, who won The BAAM Award for Industry. This is awarded by BAAM to the student whose consideration of commercial requirements and expectations are meeting the highest professional standards at this level.

Ryan’s winning project is about how health issues affect our handwriting. Ryan met with a number of people whose handwriting has been affected by serious health issues, including Parkinson's disease, visual impairment etc. He asked each of them to draw a complete alphabet, then scanned these images and converted the letters into fonts. He then created a website through which users could buy one of these functioning typefaces for £10, the money generated being donated to a connected charity.
