People are not obligated to give you their personal information online.
This includes: Names, Addresses, States, City, Towns, Potentially Identifying Information, disabilities or Age.
Many of you are very very young. If you’re around twenty or younger, you’re growing up in a period of time where for some reason there has been a sort of evolution wherein people feel entitled to personally identifying information.
The reality of the situation is that most people put way too much info out there on the net, I know for a fact I do it, I do it with the knowledge I shouldn’t do it, but that doesn’t mean you should just because people like me are dumb. If someone asks for your ‘real’ name, your address, or your age, you do not have to give it to them, and more than that, you should not. Because it’s dangerous. There are predators online, yes, even on tumblr, lots on tumblr.
The absolute most that can be requested of you is that someone can ask if you are eighteen or older before allowing you access to not safe for work content. And if you have the filters off on tumblr that allow you to see it, you’re already agreeing that you’re 18 years or older anyway.
You do not have to put personally identifying information anywhere on your tumblr if you so choose. Not doing so is the intelligent, cyber-safe way of conducting yourself.
The current internet culture of having everything from your name age and blood type available at the click of a button is incredibly unsettling and dangerous. Do not fall into that trap.
A great post about cyber safety!
