headcanons & backstory
Born on the wrong side of the tracks, Kitty was raised by a single mother more preoccupied by her revolving door of of boyfriends than paying attention to her daughter. For as long as she can remember, she had to fight for love and attention as it wasn’t given to her easily. It wasn’t that her mother disliked having a daughter — the days she seemed to remember that Kitty existed were her favourite days, always filled with love and laughter. Most days, she simply seemed to forget that she had a daughter at all. Kitty was often overlooked, forced to scrounge up her own meals from the eclectic mix of groceries in the fridge, find her own way to and from school, and read herself a bedtime story at night. Needless to say, it made Kitty angry. Some days she would be filled with a rage so uncontrollable that she would smash everything she could get her little hands on before coming to her senses, curling into a sobbing ball on the floor.
By the fourth grade, Kitty decided to adopt a “fake it til you make it” attitude, her own coping mechanism to deal with her neglect at home. Watching all her friends get picked up by their mom’s after school, running into their arms as they were embraced with warm hugs, she found herself embarrassed that she didn’t have the same. Afraid of being judged, of being bullied if her classmates learned that even her own family didn’t care about her, she decided to slap on a big smile, telling everyone she met fabricated tales about her happy home life. Kitty firmly believed that if she came to school every day with a bright and cheery personality, everyone at school might believe her happy-go-lucky attitude. That they might actually start to like her. If she could trick everyone into thinking that she was fine, she might start to believe it herself — and eventually she did. A bright, cheerful personality that was so sickly sweet it could make your teeth rot may have started out fake, but soon became an integral part of who she is, a piece of her DNA.
Coasting on her peppy personality, Kitty lived a good life. Loved by everyone she met, everything seemed to come easy to her. While she still felt flashes of anger when friends cancelled plans at the last minute or she spent too much time watching the news cycle on tv, she managed to keep her rage buried deep down inside her where it belonged. Until one day a year and a half ago as she left a club after a night of dancing, and everything changed. Drunk but able to stand on her own two feet, she waves her friends away, assuring them she can wait for her Uber alone. She’s standing by herself in the alley beside the club when a man approaches her. Always eager to meet new friends, Kitty welcomes him without a second thought, happy to chat as she waits for her car. But as he continues to stand so close, a hand resting on her ass, lips grazing against her ear, she grows uneasy. Before her own car can arrive he’s trying to pull her into another cab and that’s when Kitty snaps, reaching for the corkscrew she keeps in her purse for wine emergencies. All the rage that’s been pent up inside of her for years bursts out as she stabs him in the side, allowing her to run away. While she manages to make it to safety, the consequences follow her as she finds herself in jail for assault. Heartbroken and angry, she does her best to stay positive but even after she’s cleared of all charges it’s too late. She’s lost her job, an eviction notice pinned to her front door, and she’s never felt quite so desperate. She needs to get out, to start over.
From the moment she found Corona on the map, Kitty knew that’s where she had to be. The island was so bright and beautiful, just like her — it felt like the island was calling to her. This was her place, her safe haven to forget her past and start over, Unable to do anything on her own, she immediately began pleading her case to her friends, begging them one by one to join them on the island, Convincing her friends to move to Corona is easier than Kitty thought, and now that they’re here, she can’t imagine being anywhere else. Settling in Corona nearly a year ago, she finally has a place that feels like home.
If there’s one thing Kitty loves, it’s candy. Not only does the sugary sweetness match her personality, but it’s guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. She opened the Spoonful of Sugar Candy Store six months ago, and Kitty couldn’t be prouder of her little shop. Looking like something out of a child’s imagination, the shop is lilac purple and candy apple green with splashes of cotton candy blue and pink — just a handful of her favourite colours. With almost every candy imaginable lining the shelves, Kitty tries to make sure that everyone will find something there to make them happy. Not the most responsible business owner, she is known to give discounts and free candy away to her friends and favourite customers but she’s not here to make a profit. She just wants to make people smile.
Starting therapy as soon as she settled on Corona, it has been a godsend in helping quell her inner rage. Using her therapist’s favourite trick to calm herself whenever she can feel the rage bubbling inside her, Kitty can often be found muttering three things that make her happy under her breath. You can often find her listing her favourite types of candy, her favourite pop divas, or her favourite Broadway musicals.
Kitty likes to think of anyone she meets as her friend. Whether they’re a customer at her store, made polite small talk with her while they both waited for their coffee at the local coffee shop, or genuinely consider her to be a friend, she loves everyone and goes out of her way to make them smile. As an eternal optimist, she’s also the kind of friend people like to have in her corner. While they might hesitate to come to her with serious issues, not sure someone so bubbly has the capacity to deal with it, she’s the one people come to when they need cheering up or to be hyped up. She’s eager to provide both.
It’s easy for people to underestimate Kitty. Her cheerful personality is sometimes mistaken as her being stupid or ditzy, but she happens to be incredibly street smart. But not one to brag about herself, she often lets people think what they want about her, even though she gets quite sad when people don’t love her.
Kitty is a loyal and trusting friend that will always have your back, and she tries to see the good in anybody. But if you do happen to cross her, it’s very hard to win back her trust and love. Her anger often comes out now if people are cruel or if they’re liars, and she’s not one to easily forgive and forget.
While she’s never been in a serious relationship, Kitty loves the idea of live and has been in love more times than she can count. At the very least, she thinks it’s love. Whenever someone smiles at her or offers her a compliment, no matter how innocent it may be, she tends to blow it up in her mind, planning their entire future together before she even really gets to know them. It gives her painfully high expectations when going into a first date — she either feels let down when they can’t live up to the person she’s built in her mind, or scares her date away with her intense infatuation so early on. One day she hopes to go into a relationship with a cool and rational head, but she can’t help but get ahead of herself.
Kitty adores animals. She has two cats and a bunny, and she would love to adopt a dog some day.
She’s absolutely terrible at following instructions and likes to make her own rules, both in life and in board games.
