This whole article blew my mind by alerting me to disparities I had never thought of, but specifically this paragraph: 

“The poorest children in cities across India are three times as likely as the wealthiest children to die before their fifth birthday. In India nearly 300,000 babies die the day they are born — more than any other country in the world, accounting for nearly a third of all newborn deaths worldwide. And we found that 50,000 mothers die each year in India as a result of birth complications, versus 1,200 in the United States.”

“In a democratic society, people have a say in how they are policed, and people are saying that they are not satisfied with how things are going,” says police chief Sean Whent of Oakland who has implemented changes in his own training systems, teaching officers smart decision making that emphasizes how to avoid force instead of how to use it. While the underlying issues of discrimination undeniably demand attention, these smaller level changes are encouraging for the type of reflection and rethinking that can and should be coming out of these protests.

Violence and Public Health?

If we’re going to understand and address the impact police violence has on community safety and health, particularly for communities of color who are disproportionately victimized, we have to treat it the way we treat all threats to health. That means collecting data to quantify the magnitude of the problem, developing screening guidelines to identify those at risk, training medical staff to refer those at risk of impending danger, and funding interventions that address community violence including police violence.

Faced with a bloated military and what it perceived as a worsening drug crisis, the 101st Congress in 1990 enacted the National Defense Authorization Act. Section 1208 of the NDAA allowed the Secretary of Defense to “transfer to Federal and State agencies personal property of the Department of Defense, including small arms and ammunition, that the Secretary determines is— (A) suitable for use by such agencies in counter-drug activities; and (B) excess to the needs of the Department of Defense.” It was called the 1208 Program.
