Total State Machine from Disphoria Design on Vimeo.
3 years in the making this archive, analysis and critical appraisal of the work of Test Dept provides a missing history of the radical political underground music milieu of the 1980s through to the present day.
Test Dept’s work is represented in minute detail in this full colour printed book on art papers. Total State Machine is a creative work that presents the material and analysis of monumental industrial performance totally unlike anything their peers produced. This is the definite history of Test Dept as told by the group themselves and a variety of contributors including Stephen Mallinder, Robin Rimbaud, Marek Kohn, Jonathon Moore, Malcolm Poynter, Brett Turnbull, Ivan Novak, Diamanda Galas and many others. The book is edited and also has contributions form Alexei Monroe and Peter Webb.
It has sections on every period of the groups work from the early Industrial experiments and cassette releases, through their recorded albums and spectacular shows in disused railway depots and car factories on to their work with dance music and reinvigorating of Beltane festival in Scotland. The group have always been political and their work with the Miners, Print Workers, Anti Poll tax and Anti-Criminla Justice Bill campaigns are also documented in great detail. The book unearths many unseen photographs, art works, lyrics, manifestos and statements that really show the groups commitment to music and many other medias as part of their political and transformational understanding of creative practice and cultural work.
Cul-de-sac (trailer) from Colin O'Toole on Vimeo.
Cul-de-sac is a middle-aged misadventure film from BAFTA-winner Colin O'Toole set in suburban Manchester during the mid-1980s. A couple finds that their lives are reaching a dead end. Stuck, they take a risk to save their relationship, but could this be a step too far? Cul-de-sac is a film about long-term relationships, communication, childhood memories, planning permission, pampas grass, and the refuge people place in distracting obsessions.

sight specific episode 2. gary stranger.
Largely self-taught, Gary Stranger creates hand-lettered typographic works that are minimal in form but layered in meaning. His background in graffiti and interest in the freehand execution of lettering impart an unmistakable sharp-edged precision to both his process and work. Yet beneath the honed technique, the restraint and exactitude lies a palpable rawness, a quiet offering of his own vulnerability and an acknowledgement of the sheer vastitude of the lived experience.
Similarly, the intention of this film is to not only showcase Gary Stranger’s work and point of view, but to explore deeper and more expansive questions about personal choice, self-determination, and the intense ebbs and flows of creative work and life.

During the Hour of Darkness is a site-specific performance by James Jordan Johnson, filmed by Shamica Ruddock, situated at the shores of Chalkwell, Southend on Sea. The work makes use of Chalkwell's momentary low tide as a liminal space which allows for distinct ways of seeing the land and water. The performance uses an idea of a continuous topographical departure and returns by using the feet and walking to unearth the amorphous properties of tar (which sits under the undercurrents of sand), acting as a temporary black, timeless and primordial hole.

Fractals from Estabrak on Vimeo.
2023 / 22:40mins Commissioned by North Lands Creative and Shanghai Museum of Glass for 'Glass Meet The Future Film Festival 2023'
Fractals is a short film exploring the dynamics of an artists life living
within complex intersectional and socialised margins of acceptance. It is an intimate exploration in how the medium of glass can be used to represent such vulnerable yet powerful life stories and experiences, through the artists own words.
A Short documentary style film, it follows the making of new glass works and uncovers insight into Estabrak's multi faceted creative process.
Through centering the relationship of glass and water and the deep connections these mediums have to nature and our environments, this film chronicles the use of glass in representing deep human complexities; including invisible systems and queer love.
Working across the mediums of water, wood, sand and ice, key conversations explored in
this film are biology, love, war, food, security, culture, structures and family; all through new ways of engaging the medium of glass.
