I wanted to say that I absolutely love Bear The Weight! It was a fic that marked my middle school years. There isn’t many stories that focuses on the Akimichi so it was a relay exciting journey! I’m glad I could find you here on Tumblr, it’s like stumbling on a profile of a school friend years later. I hope you’re doing fine!

Oh, wow. This message has to be years old! I am sorry for not seeing it until now. That fic is STILL GOING. I just started working on it again after three years with no new chapters. I just realized that chapter chapter 15 on ff.net is TECHNICALLY the same, except it has at least five extra paragraphs at the beginning? Is there a reason for that? If feels like you went to post it and accidentally cut off the beginning of the chapter or in the middle of it? If that makes sense? I mean, the chapter number and title is in the middle of the chapter. I'm just a bit confused, is all

It definitely wasn't intentional. I was posting on a03 a few years after the fact, from what I remember, so I was probably rushing. Most likely, I just wasn't paying attention as I tried to migrate my stuff. Thank you again for letting me know!

So, I've been rereading A Matter of Time, and I noticed that the version on fanfiticon.net isn't the same as on archiveof our own. I had to check multiple times to make sure I wasn't seeing things. I assume it's an error of some kind?

Literally don't know where else to post this, but dang if I'm not so proud of and heartbroken for Loki. That's one of my favorite characters for over a decade who had so much character growth but who is also doomed to be alone in his burden. Gracious.

Hi! I know it's been a while since you've talked about Hetalia, but this is sort of an offshoot about that???? Hahaha, there's this miniseries that you can watch (based on a novel) called All the Light We Cannot See and it's set in WWII. I won't tell you the synopsis (there's no way I can do it justice, but it's emotional and heartrending. But most of all it's filled with hope and faith and I have a feeling that you might like it. :D

So I have my first stack of papers to grade as a TA and uh....grading really is a process that hurts on a lot of levels. Mostly I'm worried for the students who aren't doing well and haven't been asking questions or studying....I hope they don't get discouraged, but the reality is many will, despite my professor's best attempts to help and encourage :(

It's always tough to know that there are students that have so much potential who, for whatever reason, cannot fulfill it. On the one hand, it's frustrating because there's every tool and resource in front of them and multiple avenues to those tools and resources. On the other hand, it can make you feel helpless. You can't force them to do it. You can't force them to engage. And you don't know why they're not doing those things in the first place. Even after ten years of teaching, I still struggle with this. It's a bit easier now because I am able to bring myself to follow through on the consequences after building out as many thoroughfares to success as I possibly can and providing as many avenues to resolution as is sustainable.

Not to mention that this generation of students is struggling in ways that previous generations have not. In a lot of ways, we're in uncharted territory. Lack of motivation, lack of engagement, a despair that seems to linger at the edges of everything, it's sad to watch and it's hard to know that there's only so much we can do to help.

Just the fact that you care, Anon, is making a difference. Truly.

So I think it's been either ten years or already nearing ten years since the start of AMOS so... do you think you've grown as a writer? As a person since then? What would you change about AMOS (any part of the series) and why? Would a Michelle who was taken from 2023 rather than 2013 be different and in what ways? (Either the same age as she had been originally taken, or in her mid thirties at this point). Thank you for the memories :D

Oh, wow. Ten years. It's so hard to believe it's been that long! So much has happened since then.

I think I've changed since then, for sure. I'm a better writer in some regards, and not so much in other ways. I get in my own head much more often now. I never really hit writer's block with AMOS, but my more recent stories have been riddled with it. That said, I think I am better at characterization now, as well as managing various perspectives. AMOS is written in first person. I haven't written something in first person since I finished it. At first because it was hard to get into a voice other than Michelle's and then because I started to love getting in the heads of other characters.

What would I change about AMOS? I don't know that I would change much. I do think I would have handled the castle in AMOC better. It felt a bit disjointed. At the time, it was kind of intentional because poor Michelle was so confused throughout that story. (Also, I was trying to finish before writing my dissertation, I think.) That said, I think that whole arc could have been handled better. Also, I REALLY wanted to write a third installment that I never got to write. It was going to finally lean into the HetaOni references, but alas.

Oh, an older, wiser, and post-2020 Michelle would have been so different. I mean, dang, imagine that Michelle knows she's potentially carry COVID into WW2 where no one has immunity or the means to create a vaccine. Just the fear from that alone would be devastating. Imagine a Spanish Flu pandemic in the middle of the war. Also, I imagine that older Michelle would've straight-up clocked Spain and Prussia. She would have had much less patience than younger Michelle. She would have been much more at odds with England's attitude, and probably...Well, basically everyone's but Egypt. No matter what the Michelle, her connection with Egypt would be a constant in my mind. (Also, I wonder if the older Michelle would be an Assistant or Associate Professor by the time the map happens? Or if younger Michelle in 2023 would have even gone into academia or ended up in a non-academic job? The job market isn't great, after all.)

I was thinking about this the other day actually: AMOS was such an important experience for me as a writer. I grew a lot. The story taught me a lot about history, war, and writing. It (and all the people who read it) got me through some really, really tough times. I'm really grateful for it. Truly.

10 years! Wow, wow, wow.

So I’m doing a creative writing exercise where I have to summarize characters’ personalities in a short description paragraph, and it got me thinking about my favorite female character miss Michelle! I’m curious how you would go about describing a couple of the characters like Johnny, Alfred, Michelle, or even Caroline, especially because they are so nuanced I don’t know if they can be done justice in such few words. But I’d love to see you try, I have learned so much from you and AMOS!

Let's see if I can do short descriptions of Michelle and Johnny's personalities.

Michelle is a historian in many senses of the word and mission. She considers herself a purveyor of stories in educating others about the past whether in a classroom or museum. She mentally strong and slow to trust, but once she trusts you, that trust is unshakable. Michelle has a strong moral compass, willing to sacrifice herself for others if need be. Unfortunately, though, Michelle's not very forthcoming with her thoughts, which can lead to misunderstandings or to dire consequences.

John J. Jones is opportunistic and determined, ruthless and kind. His state is full of juxtapositions: city and farmland, law and chaos, new and old. Because of this, Johnny experiences new things with an old eye and old things with a new eye. He often considers himself a safe haven, but can be incredibly violent in ways people do not expect. Johnny holds grudges, not just because crime families make his major city their home and they say NYC streets are unforgiving, but because he feels very deeply. He'll be honest with you to the point of being rude, but is also so very careful and caring with the people he lets into his circle of trust. Once you're in that circle, he has your back-- always.

AW, it was so much fun to remember Michelle and Johnny. Wow. Ten years this year.

How would Michelle have fared in Westeros?

Honestly, not well.

Unless... Michelle understands politics. Not that it would help her in the Seven Kingdoms. If she were wanting to Stay Out of It, I could see her escaping somewhere, like Dorne maybe? Michelle's also pretty discerning and does okay under duress, so maybe she could survive? I really don't even like imagining her in that series. I barely know it well enough to hazard guesses.

Where were the UK brothers during all the events in the stories?

In my mind, they were taking part in the war effort. On different fronts, acting as spies, working on allies. At least one of them was likely helping with the evacuation of children to the countryside and helping with the organization of air raid shelters. Not sure who though.

What would the UK brothers relationship have been with Michelle had they been in there? (its been so long since I read so I honestly do not remember if there was any..)

There was interaction with the German States, but not UK's brothers. I don't know honestly. I think a mutual frustration with Arthur would be a pretty shared emotion. Probably a stronger connection to Scotland as some of her ancestors are from Scotland. And I would imagine Scotland to be very 'this one is mine, that one is mine.' Northern Ireland (and I'm particular about this because Hima wasn't super clear, was he?) would get along swell with Johnny, and so would take up to being protective when he's not there.
