Translation: The gay tinker-genius
The English mathematician Alan Turing is as much a genius as he is eccentric. Thanks to his abilities the Secret Service in Second World War managed to break the "unbreakable" Enigma code the Nazis used to encrypt their messages. This knowledge played an important role in changing the course of the war.
But the Allies' victory did not end in a triumph for the genius. His masterly performance stayed top secret for decades. Even worse: His homosexuality got him convicted in the 50s and drove him into suicide. Only in 2013 was he pardoned by the Queen and got an amazing memorial in the form of the drama "The Imitation Game", one favourite for this years' Oscars.
Enigma was said to be unbreakable. The British Secret Service hired the smartest people of the country. All in vain, until the eccentric student Alan Turing arrived. His job interview turns out to be a disaster, but his extraordinary talent makes him indispensable. Turing gets 100.000 pounds to build his experimental machine that's supposed to break the Enigma secret. He names it "Christopher" after the boy he had a special friendship with when he was young. Flashbacks show how the sensitive misfit was bullied in school. Like in any drama about code-breaking, the dramatic composition is a puzzle and elegantly switches between time frames. Next to the flashbacks, there are scenes after the war, when the hero was convicted and forced to undergo chemical castration which drove him into depression.
Benedict Cumberbatch, made famous as his role as "Sherlock", plays the ingenious misfit with charismatic ease and precision that causes chills. Playing a, at first glance, not likeable character, an arrogant man, with a finesse that touches your heart deserves an Oscar.
The war hero used a poisoned apple to kill himself. In 2009 prime minister Gordon Brown apologized for the inhuman behaviour of the British justice system. That said apple, that lay next to the dead genius, was the inspiration for the famous apple-logo, was once declared a legend by Steve Jobs, but he regretted not getting that idea. The fact that this genius of computer science finally got a monument with this film, 60 years after his suicide, is a very late victory for justice.
"Congratulations on the Oscar nomination, Ben."
"Thanks, Tom. I just feel like..."
''Be a good girl, darling... and kneel.''

// WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!! :O AKJSBKASNDKJASBFKASDKUAHSKA OMGOMGOMGOMG!!! *exessive fangirling* I HAVE NO IDEA WHY HE WAS THERE BUT DID YOU HEAR HIM SING?! :D
Sorry for the caps but I cannot stay calm. I can only assume why he was there but he performed there and he just proved again why I love him so much. Here’s his performance and when I heard that, I was literally dead. THat man is too perfect for this world, I’m telling you.
[[ Nope, I avoid that festival at all costs. Literally the only people who go are stoners or musicians who will only have this festival to play live for an audience tbh. Even when I was a child, I knew that was a place I’d never want to go, that’s how bad it is xD
cumberbennybatch — Like, I got that from the news reports, but what I don’t get is why he was here of all places. Hank Williams never lived here, in fact he was born and raised (from what I can see) in the south. We have extremely different accents here from those of the southern drawl. Not to mention, we’re definitely not famous for any country music by any means. I’ve never heard of anyone remotely famous being at that festival, typically its just townies who have guitars and think they have talent. Regardless, I hope it helped him in some way xD And that it undoes all of the damage done to our towns publicity for the rave that was thrown here this summer. ]]
// Well, like I said, Tom is currently practicing with this guy... and this guy was booked to perform at that festival and I guess Tom came with him so he could practice singing country music on stage. :)
[[ I am legit so amused right now and VERY confused. Tom Hiddleston was at a festival thats legit 10 miles away from my house this weekend (which is prob the closest most of us around here have been to a celebrity) but I can’t help but wonder WHY???? Esp since that festival is famous around here...
Hey :) Nina here. He was there because he currently practices country music and American accent with the guy he was on stage with. Tom will play Hank Williams in a film and wanted to practice performing country music on stage.
