"Do memories ever haunted you? Do you ever mourn for something that could have been?"
These were questions she has been asked from time to time. From some it was with curiosity lacing their tone, with others it was with tears and anger. And then there were those that sought to try and relate to her. Or perhaps, to have her relate to them? It was difficult to parse, at times. Her species didn't really possess the same morality as others.
The witch looked his way for a moment. Quiet, thoughtful. It wasn't because she needed to think about the answer, it was because she didn't know how to say the truth in a way that might make sense. It was so innate to her to be this way that she couldn't imagine it differently at this time.
"Well... Yes and no to both. I feel haunted by many things, both personal and related to my purpose as a witch. I can mourn, feel anger and remorse about the former... but I cannot feel them about the latter. Remorse leads to doubt and the moment I begin to doubt things, to wonder if things could have been different, I then begin to doubt myself. For mortals, this is a normal progression of thought. For many witches, especially myself, doubting oneself is a direct contradiction of my purpose and very nature - the choices that led me to the resulting point."
Mortem used her pointer fingers, drawing out her meaning in the air vaguely.
"If it helps me better myself to adapt to the next time something happens, that's one thing. To fall into despair, regret... guilt, even, I cannot feel those things so long as I am alive. I look forward to feeling such things when I am relinquished of my purpose and can die, though." Her lips curved into a smile, wistful at the thought of the day she'd get to join in the cycle of things.
"And then there's the principle of the matter. To acknowledge wrongdoing, as I said, can be acceptable towards my own growth. But to think on it to the point of burdening myself would be a disservice to those I've made choices against. To reconsider and regret after betraying them, for instance, does nothing for them. I still did wrong by them. I can only hope that in the future, they'll accept my reflection in death."
"I cannot imagine for myself things being different by much. But there are some instances in life I must be careful with... for I know I would mourn what could have been." Her hand lifted, pointing to the narrow display box atop the far dresser near her bookshelves. Inside, a shattered sword rested. Old, but well kept. She made sure of it. "I can consider in bursts what things could have been like to understand how to better make them still. As is my purpose, in a way."
She then redirected her hand to point out to all the flowers in the garden past the window. Over half her garden was now made of flowers she planted for those who had been lost. "To make sure the lives of those lost both unfairly or simply to time can rely on my commitment, even if they were on the opposing side. I can feel everything... but I also cannot, you see?"
Her head slanted gently. She looked forward to the day where she could feel everything in full. All the ugly things that her nature, her purpose as a witch cancelled out. The day she could look at these souls she harmed, the souls she had lost and tell them all 'I'm sorry for my part' would be the true ringing of the bell that she was done.
