despite how satoru presses him, he can immediately tell that suguru isn't being completely honest with him. the both of them are ridiculously good at lying, but they know each other too well to be fooled. it's a frustrating predicament that satoru finds himself in because he wants to press the issue further, but he also doesn't want the other boy to completely shut down and push him away either. 

❝ you sure? ❞ satoru raises his eyebrows as he glances over at suguru, questioning. more than anything, it hurts satoru to see his friend be so clearly down in the dumps while he personally feels powerless in trying to help him. he sighs then, and speaks softly then. he's trying to toe a thin line between being supportive and patronizing. satoru himself has never been good at this sort of thing considering suguru was his first proper friend.

❝ suguru, ❞ he begins, hesitant as he considers his words. ❝ you can tell me anything, man. i won't judge you. you know how much of a jackass i was when we first met. you're my best friend, and i wanna be here for you, but i can't do that if you won't let me in, ❞ satoru places a tender, gentle hand onto suguru's shoulder then in an attempt to be reassuring, but also testing how he's responding to this conversation. truthfully, it's been a while since satoru's had any physical contact with anyone since he's learned how to keep his technique running 24/7. 

❝ please? ❞ he begs.

Suguru looks up at his friend when he sounds tentative. It's such a rare thing for Satoru not to be overly confident and is instead speaking tentatively, like he's unsure of his words or the effect they have on him. It's very powerful, because Suguru knows that within that hesitance there's vulnerability, and his resolution to brush it all under the rug and call it a day falters when his best friend places a gentle hand on his shoulder.

His own mask breaks and his expression changes minutely, a mixture of guilt for not being better at hiding it, and relief at being seen. His lips purse and he takes a beat too long to reply since his heart is stuck in his throat and he needs to swallow it back down into the empty cavity in his chest before being able to speak.

❝ Can I stay ? ❞ he asks, suddenly feeling rather small. ❝ Just. Just tonight. I'm not-... I don't think I'm really okay. ❞

Satoru's earnestness takes Suguru by surprise for a second. He's already feeling pretty enamoured, tangled limbs as they are, Satoru's face flushed a deep red contrasting the crystalline of his eyes from their recent tryst. He doesn't think he can hold any more love for his partner in his chest, but when Satoru's grave voice grazes his ears and his words find home in his heart, when he can see in his eyes that he's looking at him like he's everything, he feels like he's going to explode.

He smiles, reaching up to cup his face tenderly, stroking his warm cheekbone with his thumb. He's so earnest, they both are, but truly Suguru owes Satoru so much. More than anything, he owes him the opportunity of being here with him, of loving him like he knows he was born to.

❝ Me, too, ❞ he says, closing the gap between them and pressing his lips to Satoru's soft own. ❝ You make me very happy. The happiest. I love you infinitely. ❞

❝ Why would I lie about it ? ❞ A feeble attempt at keeping this up, betrayed by a twitch of Suguru's lips. He immediately schooled his expression, but Kento's suspicions made it very hard to hide the mischievous glint in his eye now.

❝ It's to enhance your perception. Yaga-sensei asked me to hand it out to the juniors - Haibara-kun already drank his, ❞ he said, waving the smoothie bottle in the air lightly. Truth is, he and Satoru blended all the rotten veggies in their respective mini fridges that they were meant to throw out, put the disgusting resulting concoction in a bottle, and were going around fooling people into drinking it.

Shoko had sniffed them out immediately. Haibara-kun had already been a victim to it and Suguru had laughed so hard it gave him a stitch. Now it was time for the last of them !

❝ I wouldn't prank you with something like this, I'm not Satoru. ❞ Oh boy. He almost broke character and burst out laughing at that one.

Suguru cups his chin, a finger tapping over his lips as he thinks about it. After careful consideration, he answers decidedly.

« Hah. You poor thing. Still so young to have good taste, » Suguru says, voice heavy with mirthful wistfulness. He reaches up to place a hand on the top of her head and pats her patronisingly.

They are sharing an earbud each, and Suguru skips the next couple of songs in his playlist, as though looking for a specific one.

« Nope. Sorry, I don't have any Okaasan to Issho in here for you... »
