she only shows up once in the show, as the daughter of mark's business acquaintance whose family went missing during a sub-orbital trip. she is found 10 years after, living as a giant's experiment/bait for little people on the giant world [s1 ep 12 the golden cage]
in my version, i have marna as mark's childhood best friend whose family went missing during their world-hopping vacation 20-ish years ago (so yeah, that space warp has been grabbing people for at least that long). technically, we'd get a hint of the whelan family during an episode i've titled "laundry day" where marjorie and fitzhugh scavenge an old, downed personal sub-orbital capable jet for their alt outfits (they're the only 2 people in the crew that didn't have luggage/lost their clothes when shit went down) and it turns out to be the whelan's jet
this scene in particular takes place during an episode i've titled "exodus" where the spindrift crew take a more direct course of action when they find out where the government/science department are holding a bunch of little people/humans in one spot. is it a trap specifically for the spindrift crew or just the government getting lucky with grabbing little people? doesn't matter, the spindrift are going to get them out of there if they can. and they do. and mark comes across marna, who had been surrendered once she was deemed no longer useful. this is his attempt to get her to choose something better for herself, and you know, she ultimately would, but that includes not joining mark and the rest of the crew. it's a long road back to being her own person, and she can't stand to be around the one friend she remembered. she would most likely join the all american youth flight [s1 ep 13 "the lost ones"] or another group of stranded humans. mark would be, you know, sad about it, but at the same time: she's made up her own mind. making her own choices. finally.
marna shows up, technically, in the next prompt, and shows up where you can see her face shortly after
