Night Book by Akii

The Night Book is a small little source of light that hides and waits for you until you need it. The Japanese design duo Akii designed this little lamp to look exactly like a book between all your other books. By pulling it out of its sheet metal cover the light is switched on and illuminates its surroundings with a gentle and warm light. It helps you during long dark winters in the darkest corners of your book collection to browse for the right book or as a nightlight between the books at your nightstand beside your bed.

Natura Insects

Montreal-based fashion designer and creative Raku Inoue continues his Natura Insects series with a focus on brilliantly colored moths and butterflies. The delicate insects were created from seasonal leaves and blooms, with pastel petals and green leaves composing those made in late summer, and warmer tones and brown leaves forming the works made in mid-fall.

House Tschengla | Innauer-Matt Architekten

The Tschengla plateau in Western Austria beckons city dwellers and tourists with its spectacular alpine landscapes and sense of serenity. Unlike many other houses in the area, which remain empty for most of the year, House in Tschengla has become a second home for its owners. Located only 30 minutes away from their apartment in the town of Feldkirch, the house effectively transformed into a weekend retreat. The Innauer-Matt Architekten studio designed the structure as an homage to vernacular architecture, referencing local farmhouses. As a result, this contemporary cabin looks completely at home in its rustic surroundings. It features simple lines, wooden cladding, and a solid plinth as well as a traditional gable roof.

Brighton 5 |  InForm

A minimal home located in Melbourne, Australia, designed by InForm. This sleek two story residential pavilion includes an open plan living area, study and master bedroom on the ground floor, with three kids’ bedrooms and a rumpus room on the upper floor. A large loggia adjacent to the pool includes an outdoor kitchen and open fireplace. Quality, timeless external finishes include cement render walls, metal fascias and timber soffits, with contrasting black powder coated door frames and screens. The theme of casual luxury continues into the interior, which includes a concrete fireplace suspended between the meals and living space.

House in Ematsu |  Airhouse

A minimal residence located in Aichi, Japan, designed by Airhouse. The client is a family of five, consisting of three daughters and their parents. As such, one of the demands was to have interchangeable partitions that could be easily moved according to future family changes. The result was a two-story space without pillars composed of grid-like beams so that they could be easily removed in order to change the layout. Initially, the last born child was too young to not have partitions, so intead a curtain was used to separate the spaces.

Renovation in Montreal |  L'Abri

Canadian build-design studio L'Abri has outfitted a home in Montreal with thin slats of wood that create floorboards on the upper level and form a partition in the foyer.

The Rivard project involved turning apartments in an early 1900s property into a contemporary single-family home. The layout is reconfigured with a centralised living space that covers the entire ground floor, with a back terrace and car port.

“The original bunk apartments, largely partitioned, give way to a spacious modern residence,” said L'Abri.

Keerbergen House |  Minus

Belgian interior design firm Minus is named according to a philosophy favoured by minimalists, Minus believes great design is achieved through subtraction, not addition. Furthermore, Minus aims to design interiors that correspond perfectly with living style. Among their portfolio is Keerbergen House, a designer home that values lifestyle as much as visual style.

Simple colours and basic geometries define Keerbergen House. White is favoured, as is a single-story rectangular floor plan. The ground floor is spilt in two parts: a kitchen on one half of the space and a sitting room on the other. Rather than separated to two different rooms, a divider wall spans partially between them. Floor to ceiling windows stretch the full length of the house, highlighting the home’s wooded surroundings.

Soho Loft |  Nusla Design

A minimal interior design located in Soho, New York, designed by Nusla Design. The building was formerly the silver factory for Tiffany & Co. jewelers. Given the significant history, it was important that the original details were maintained and restored while updating with newer elements and functionality. The dropped ceiling was removed, the double-hung wooden windows were restored and the brick walls were exposed. New wide board floors were treated using a traditional Scandinavian process. The industrial aesthetic, including the black steel windows and large custom steel panels for the bedroom wall were also a nod to the history of the loft. The clean modern lines against the uneven historic lines of the walls and beams against the new clean white floor and white walls provides a sense of serenity.

To contrast with the unfinished white walls and the raw concrete tiles, the bronze tombac and concrete kitchen from Reform adds texture and richness. The full-height book-matched marble wall in the kitchen complements the rich bronze of the kitchen and also elevates the space adding a hint of luxury within the industrial space. The loft is perched at the back of the building and is surrounded by yards and trees, we maximized the openings for the existing windows and added four new window openings in the rear wall and also two skylights in the roof. The natural light flowing into the apartment contributes to the airy atmosphere. The apartment contains two separate large bedrooms with bathrooms en-suite. The floor plan consists of a large open living room with a dining area at one end and an opening living space at the other.

OS Offices |  GRT Architects

New York studio GRT Architects has renovated spaces at the top of a 19th-century building in the city, creating an office for a UX design firm that looks more like a home than a workplace. The local studio designed the interiors for Objective Subject, a digital identity agency based in the Flatiron district. The office takes up a series of gabled spaces that cover the building’s roof, and these existing rooms were used to guide the layout.
