bonus part 10 of the atla pokemon au: appa and momo as regional flying type bouffalant and aipom!
(i wanted to draw something for these two but couldn't work out how to fit them into any existing pokemon all that well, so this is the compromise i came up with haha)
part 9 of 9* of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: aang
my rationale for these pics is: mantyke - whimsical and silly water/flying type that greatly enjoys surfing and playing, serving as an innocent contrast to the fact that it has the potential to evolve into a mon coded as a war machine gligar - ground/flying type, also whimsical and silly, and also a very protag-coded mon thanks to the anime fletchinder - less whimsical but as close as you can get with any of the current fire/flying types; i like to think he would've caught fletchling early on but didn't evolve it for ages haha. as a flying-type master who feels entirely at home in the boundless skies, aang specialises in using feather balls (which i gave a more modern design here for consistency reasons and also because i think they should bring them back tbh)
*if you're wondering why appa and momo aren't represented here, i uhhh drew another thing that i will be posting shortly so look out for that ig haha
part 8 of (probably) 9 of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: sokka
my rationale for these picks is: gumshoos - sokka enjoys playing at being a detective, plus i feel the ability stakeout would work pretty well with how his battle strategies often rely on waiting until the right moment to strike. also as a nonbender i felt he needed at least one normal type dewott - a seafaring young warrior who evolves from a clown and into a master swordsman. i like to think that he recieved oshawott from his dad but struggled to get along with them at first as they were unaware of each others' potential. (also dewott is my favourite water type but that's neither here nor there) cubone - mostly included for the bonemerang joke, though they may also be able to bond over their shared traumas and enjoyment of bespoke headgear. that is, if sokka's able to catch this one...
as a resourceful tactician who believes in making the most of whatever he has to hand, sokka swears by regular poke balls, seeing in them an understated charm that many others write off as plain.
finally finished watching season 1 of spy x fam recently and i just had to draw yor! she's so pretty...

its that time of year agaaaaain aka the part where i agonise over which one of my many tryhard artfight attacks goes in the july spot. anyway. reasonably solid year for art ig template from:
part 7 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: katara
my rationale for these picks is: primarina - has a signature move capable of healing burns, and is probably the water starter that i feel best represents katara overall milotic - known for its power and beauty but has humble beginnings and a lot of effort put in to achieve its ultimate form vaporeon - ngl i mostly just wanted an excuse to draw another eeveelution haha. but i also feel like she'd have one, its graceful and cute in a way that would appeal to her i think as a dedicated master of the water type, she has a strong tendency to use dive balls.
part 6 of however many of me drawing atla characters as pokemon trainers: mai my rationale for these picks is: doublade - i belatedly realised this one could've gone really well with zuko so i gave it to the next best person suited for it haha. besides, as a nonbender mai probably has more use for it pawniard - probably self-explanatory. dark/steel type. stabby. the perfect mon for an edgy blade-wielder gothorita - perpetually bored and uppity goth teenager. also ig i thought it'd be fun to redesign her outfit to be vaguely gothitelle-inspired haha as a true goth, mai would never be caught using anything besides dusk balls.
