Sci-fi story idea about an alien invasion
It’s the near future, and scientists have discovered about an alien threat that’s heading towards Earth at an incredible speed and would reach us in a few years. The news spread out and people are panicking all over the place. Most people want to fight back, and drafts and training for an Earth Defense Force are already on their way.
One morning John, a simple soldier at the Earth Defense Force, is informed that he’s been mobilized to the front lines. He’s confused, since as far as he knew, the aliens have yet to reach Earth. When he and other soldiers are briefed on the mission, he learns that for several months the aliens have had a secret base in the antarctic, where they were constructing a massive weapon.
As he and his squad reach the “alien base”, they discover that it’s not alien at all, but humans. John’s commander reveals that their first enemy is indeed humans, but he promises his soldiers that those humans are indeed a threat to the Earth, and are constructing a massive weapon unbeknownst to the general population. John is skeptical, but decides to fight on.
The battle is long and hard, and many of John’s comrades die, but eventually he and a few other soldiers manage to reach the front door of the base. But what they find inside is surprising. A small community of 1,000 people living in harmony. The Earth Defense Force soldiers move in and occupy the place. But John demands to know what’s going on. His commander brings him to the room where the weapon is being constructed.
The head scientist explains that the weapon is no weapon at all, but a teleporter. The teleporter was created to transport the entire community in Antartica to a distant planet to start humanity over. The teleporter would require almost all of Earth’s resources and would leave the rest of humanity completely exposed to the alien menace.
The Earth Defense Force knew about the teleporter and was there to stop it, which is why they fought against its activation. The commander and scientist struggle, with John watching them and no knowing which side to choose. But as they fight, the teleporter is activated, a blinding light filling the entire Earth just before all lights on the planet go dark.
But the community is still in the antarctic. All three are naturally confused, but then a pre-recorded message starts playing. The scientist in the message explains everything.
The alien threat heading towards Earth isn’t living organisms, but an army of nano-machines nicknamed Killercloud. Killercloud is designed to locate life in the galaxy and destroy it wherever it finds it. It was created by an intelligent species millions of years ago and has been ravaging the galaxy ever since. The message explains that humanity didn’t have a chance against Killercloud, and that even if they could destroy it, more would follow suit.
They further explain how the teleportation scheme was a ruse, a distraction to keep the Earth Defense Force occupied while the teleporter fulfils its real purpose. To teleport a vial of manmade nano-machines, ones designed to find and destroy Killercloud, to a distant planet, so they could safely grow and spread throughout the cosmos, ending the Killercloud and bringing life back to the galaxy millions of years from now.
While the scientist and the commander start arguing, John walks out of the facility and into the frozen dark wasteland outside.
I know exactly who to call……
EDF!
EDF!
EARTH DEFENSE FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORCE!
(It’s so hard to find decent Earth Defense Force images out there.)
Earth Defense Force (EDF) is a series of third-person shooters which pits you (and co-op buddies) against hordes of giant bugs and robots in fully-destructible environments.
On top of this there’s bad voice acting with silly one-liners, actual health bars and pickups and hundreds of ridiculous weapons. I’d describe it as ‘so-bad-it’s-good’ but that’d be underselling it - the EDF series is just delightfully silly, acradey fun.
EDF Portable 3 (a port of EDF 2017 with extra bits like jetpacks) is coming out for PS Vita and I really think you should pick it up, though you may have to import it.
