I have a friend who just got a notice from a landlord advising that "pet odor elimination", after they illegally evicted them, cost over 5,000 dollars to fix.

I visited that friend regularly and have never had a pet. Their apartment always smelled like lavender and cinnamon. There was no "pet odor" I noticed besides the times that they had just finished washing their dogs when I showed up. The landlord INSISTED, even when they brought an ammonia reader that said the apartment was at 0.3 ammonia levels, that they were "overwhelmed" by it. When my friend said they couldn't smell anything even remotely overwhelming, they were told, as if it was fact, that they were "simply nose blind".

Again, I've never had a pet. My sense of smell is pretty good. I didn't smell anything, but a landlord said it, and now it's suddenly a legally recognized document.
