“Do you want to know what I was wishing for at the fountain that day?” Aleksander wistfully spoke as you heard hard blows against the dome of light he had fluently brought into existence. The walls were rattling like the rhythmic sound of your heart against your ribs. You tried to keep your attention on him in case it would be the last time you ever got to witness the shape of his features and the sound of his voice. “I was wishing for our relationship to end well. I haven’t come to know many good endings, but I was thinking if I sincerely asked for it this time I might be spared some tragedy.”
You were ready to give in at his words. “Don’t say that,” you implored. Small drops of saltwater were hitting his skin as you attempt to speak with tear-coated lips. “It won’t come to fruition if you say it,” you echoed his words from months ago in desperation.
“Hey,” he carried his stained but soft hand over your pale hair. “It may live past me, but I need you to be the one of us to survive and make it back home.”
“I’m not powerful enough to get out of this,” you argued. The volcra laying on the ground near you suddenly twitched as it still took labored breaths. It was given your attention for a short while, then, you continued, “If it’s up to me, then we’re so fucked,” you admitted. He laughed at your pessimism, which made you certain that he was not truly registering how you felt. “Aleksander, I’ve felt the Fold, and it’s practically breathing on its own.” The shield of light shook again as the sound of snapping came from the eager jaws of the vengeful beasts on the outside.
“I have faith. Not in me but in you,” he took your delicate face by your cheeks and said, “I’ll give it back.” The gift that you used to wield was running through him, and he was offering to send it back to its rightful owner.
