Interstate 70 Love Story
Moving from one end of the country to the other is hard enough, even when people have everything lined up. This is a story about my then girlfriend (now fiancé) and me, who had no plans for the future, and managed to nurture our love for each other, grow as a couple, and move completely across the country in the process.
You know that Kenny Loggins song that goes; "even though we ain't got money, I'm so in love with you honey...ā that was essentially us, broke but in love.Ā We were being spontaneous deciding to leave what we had, probably a bit on the reckless side, but that's what made it so romantic.Ā One day we were working our respective jobs, moving into a new place, and taking care of our cat children.Ā The next thing we knew, on a whim, we were asking ourselves the ādo we really want to stay here?āĀ We hatched a plan with little notice and got to work.
We had a place to stay with family, excitement of starting over, nearly everything we owned in an 5 x 8 trailer, and two clueless cats who were not fully prepared for an over a thousand mile journey.Ā We decided to take the scenic route which added about 3 extra hours to our trip, and since I was the only one who knew how to drive a stick I was the sole driver. Ā Even though I was the driver and she was my DJ, my talk show host, and my navigator, staying up with me the entire time.Ā The trip was difficult, it took 20 or so hours of mostly straight driving, with one short nap at a friendās house. Ā On the way we encountered a place where we both believe the literal devil must wait for a personās soul, a man who appeared out of nowhere to ask for $12 for a tire, and every single liminal space that doesn't exist in the time space we humans all reside in.Ā
When we made it to our destination, first thing was to get the bed out and assembled.Ā After that we snuggled up and slept, as my mom would put it, āa yong yong time.ā Ā Ā It was one of the most romantic things I've ever done with someone, it took me a while to realize this.Ā Running away with the person I loveāthat's something that goes in the movies.
If it ended there it could have been a summer romcom, but life never does.Ā My fiancĆ©'s grandmother had an advanced form of cancer that "wasn't good".Ā That whim that made us move, it felt more like fate. We spent the next several months taking her to chemo treatments, cooking her meals, and spending time reminiscing. Ā We grew as a couple and I asked her to marry me (please donāt think Iām a fan of that band Train, Iām not). It was painful seeing her grandmother's health deteriorate; she was a sharp, funny, and stubborn woman.Ā Just being around her was a joy and Iām grateful for the time I got to spend with her. I had the opportunity of knowing where my fiancĆ© came from, the type of family life she had before she passed.Ā Most long term relationships hit these bumps and fail.Ā I feel stronger because of this, and we are just getting started.Ā
