With The Love In My Heart by Jacob Collier (with Metropole Orkest and Jules Buckley) from the upcoming album Djesse Vol. 1 - Director: Jun Tamukaiue [Logic Session Breakdown]
A New Love
The more and more I listen to incredibly gifted musicians, the more and more I love music…jazz in particular. The instrumentation, the groove, the harmonization, the altered chords, the tritone subs—any other aspects of jazz that makes me sound like a complete music theory nerd. I’ve grown such a fascination by learning and discovering different pieces of the jazz world. During this journey, I’ve come across a certain individual that brings genuine joy to my heart: Jacob Collier.
As I may have mentioned before, Jacob Collier is a 21st century jazz musician who pushes the boundaries of reharmonization and presents a fresh perspective to the idea of harmony as well as music theory. From negative harmony that makes people scratch their heads, to the undertone series that doesn’t exactly exist in nature, to the super-ultra-hyper-mega-meta-lydian-scale that questions the sanity of those that even use it, Jacob Collier has blown so many minds, including mine. To add to the madness of his abundant knowledge of theory, he also plays many instruments allowing him to be a one-man-band. Believe it or not, yes—I could go on and on about how hauntingly talented he is… sure. I’ve even been blessed with the opportunity to meet him in March of 2019 and to record with him for his upcoming album: Djesse Vol. 4. This is not my reasoning for bringing him up, though.
Jacob has sparked passion in my heart. I thought I couldn’t love jazz more, until I was introduced to him. It is people like him that inspire me to persevere in my music studies. With hard work and faith, I have the potential to be a great jazz musician. Perhaps some day, people will look at me the way that I look at Jacob: with admiration and awe. That’s the dream. A dream that I can’t wait to see take flight.

DID YA KNOW? The new anime Yuri On Ice!! is generating buzz for a lot of reasons. It centers on the arguably more unconventional sport of figure skating, for one, with choreographed sequences to match. It’s also not based off of a manga, making what’s in story a mystery to viewers. But the director might be familiar to you. YOI is actually directed by Sayo Yamamoto, the woman behind another unique series, Michiko to Hatchin.
MTH was a series that took place in a fictional South American country, chronicling the adventures of protagonist Michiko Marandoro. Yamamoto has also made her name in the anime world by directing the 2012 Lupin III series, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. Yamamoto is known for her strong creative sensibilities, as well as being one of the more well-known woman directors in recent anime history. She has previously worked on popular series such as Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, Eureka Seven, and Texhnolyze.
