Bar-Bill (Clarence) - 4/3/20

So, if you have been keeping up every week, you have probably heard me going on about “fish and chips this” and “fish and chips that”. Mainly due to the lack of additional sides we have been experiencing. However, this week, I actually got a menu item that was labeled as such, given the current time being, we were slim with our pickings here, but boy I was actually really glad I made this choice in the end.

Price - $9.45

This is the cheapest option I have seen thus far by $3+ and yeah, you are not getting a crazy amount of food. But! It definitely justifies the price. If I was to choose a side of “overcharged” or “undercharged”, I would say under, as compared to some dishes in the past that I have felt were decently priced, but maybe slightly over priced. Part of the tradition of a fish fry I feel is how cheap they usually are. A+

Presentation

Much like Tully’s last week, the food all sort of blends together in a single monotone colour. However, that checkered paper underneath does wonders contrasting and making for a great photo. Definitely a picturesque fish and chips. And it came with a lemon this week!!

Taste

Fish

Rather than a giant filet, Bar-Bill does their fish in strips... or like Boujee Fish Sticks if you will. By far the crispiest and crunchiest fish thus far, but not so much that it is cutting the roof of your mouth, like a Round 3 bowl of Captain Crunch cereal. The battering on these were also by far the most seasoned, which is great because you usually only get one stand out flavour, not both. Either the fish is bland and the coating is delish or the outside taste like nothing and the inside is where it’s at! But this one did both. Plus, as a bonus, I got to eat these by hand and not dirty a utensil. Double bonus, they were not greasy or oily either meaning the stockpiles of paper towels are safe for another day.

The Tartar Sauce: Your typical run of the mill tartar. Get’s the job done!

The Fries: I am firm believer that waffle fries are the best incarnation of spud form hand cuisine, although curly may be a close runner up! My favourite part about this situation was the fact that these are the default option for this meal, which is cool, because I would have felt like I was cheating if I opted for anything other than the regular fries. And I can honestly say, despite only being about a degree above room temp, these were by far my favourite fries this year, and probably of all time right here. Just by looking at them you can tell you are in for some “seasoned goodness”. They delivered for sure! Nice and crisp, no grease, great seasoning. They were everything you could want them to be. 

The Final Verdict - 7

Despite not actually being a traditional fish fry, I would rank this among my favourites for sure! That may not fit the criteria 100% but, there are no rules anymore. It is the Pre-Apocalypse baby, we do what we want... So anyway, I know Bar-Bill is known for their Wings and Beef on Weck, but I think I would opt for this with a side of wings over the sandwich on a night out for dinner. Definitely something I would recommend trying at least once.

Fast Food Sandwiches - 3/27/20

They finally got to me! They got me to submit to the madness and made me think I would be sitting out this Friday on the sidelines. However, as Jeff Goldblum famously says in Jurassic Park, “life finds a way”. And so too did I find an interesting way to fill the fish fry void with a fun little adventure in a few block radius.

After several attempts to call three different restaurants all hope seemed like it was lost. Two restaurants never picked up the phone and the third was already out of fish. And after a long day of working from home, I was ready to call it quits and crack open a can of tuna for dinner. However, years of binging YouTube daily content inspired us with a great idea. Why not try a few fast food fish sandwiches and compare them? And so that is what we did... ENJOY!!

Arby’s - $3

Judging by the advertisements, the fish sandwiches at Arby’s are somewhat newer and so, this was a dish I was eager to try. There was 3 options to choose from; the Fish and Cheddar, Crispy Fish and King’s Hawaiian Deluxe. I opted for the “2 for $6” deal and got the first 2 choices. Although, the King’s Hawaiian did look delicious, it seemed like a “premium” menu item, only available with a meal, but something I will definitely return to try. I definitely want to try this one out because the Fish and Cheddar and Crispy Fish seem to be the same exact thing, except one comes with cheese, which will be the one I am reviewing.

As for the sandwich, overall it was actually really good. The fish tasted like an actual cut of fish, not a mess of mush that you may come to expect when getting fish from a fast food place. The fish was crisp, but you can tell that it may have been sitting for a minute. The line at Arby’s was quite long, and so it seemed everyone had the same idea as us. This probably lead them to start pre-making these to speed up the process. Either way it was good, and I know if I got it on any other day when they were not slammed it would probably be even better. What I also would like to add is my take on the cheddar. It is not a slice of cheese, so much as it is a melty sauce of cheddar. Really good during the first few bites, but after awhile it is kind of overpowering and the texture kind of sticks to your mouth. I would recommend trying it, but I can say I definitely prefer the option without cheese. Oh... and one other thing about this sandwich, why the sesame seed bun? I feel like using the same buns as all your other menu items kind of discredits your sandwich here. It makes it seem like it was just “thrown” on the menu, to me at least.

McDonald’s - $4.59

Honestly, who has not had the Filet-o-Fish from McDonald’s? If you eat fish, chances are that you have had this classic at least once before. The Filet-o-Fish is an absolute classic. So simple with its 4 ingredients; tartar, American cheese, buns and of course, Fish!

The sandwich came out nice and hot, buns super shiny, resembling a not quite brioche bun, cheese half off the sandwich, but is it really an authentic Filet-o-Fish if the cheese is fully on the bun? It had been years since I have had this sandwich and I can say I kind of missed it. I can honestly say I think this was actually better than the Arby’s, but I guess it is hard to beat that “classic” taste. The cheese was just a little bit better, the buns were in a different league compared to the flattened sesame seed mess from Arby’s. The Filet-o-Fish just melts in your mouth and is a good way to get your Lenten fix in a pinch. I will say, my one hang up with this sandwich is the price. It costs $4.59 just for the sandwich, which does not seem so outrageous considering most of their sandwiches are that price, but when you look at the short list of ingredients, you definitely expect less. Also, if I am not mistaken, I can almost swear the FoF used to be on the $1 or Value menu at some point in time for like a looong time. Maybe I am wrong, but in the end I am giving this sandwich the Number 2 spot.

Chick-Fil-A - $5.09

Last but certainly not least is the fish sandwich from Chick-Fil-A, which I believe is a limited time menu item, and I am assuming it is only available until Easter. My suggestion? Get this before it is gone!!

For this stop, I decided to go with the deluxe option this time around. For 50 cents more than the Filet-o-Fish, I got not only fish and cheese, but lettuce, tomato and PICKLES! This sandwich was by far the prettiest, and just looking at the picture, it stood as tall as the other 2 sandwiches combined! This sandwich is not all looks either, the taste was there as well. The fish was crisp on the outside, and flakey on the inside. Another instance where it just melted in your mouth. I can say this sandwich was better than some full blown fish fries I have had in my days, not any this year, but definitely some that are on my list there towards the bottom. My one complaint about this sandwich was that it did come off as a little dry. After returning home from this mini adventure, I had to double check my order and see if this came with any tartar, which it did not. Tartar sauce was not even an option to get on the side when mobile ordering, although I am going to guess you can ask for it while you are there. Even without the tartar though, this sandwich was by far the best. Not only the sandwich, but the sides as well. Chick-Fil-A has more than just fries for their sides. Since I could not get a Mac salad today, I got the Mac and cheese, which is something I recommend everybody try. The fact that this Mac and cheese is prepared at a fast food restaurant and not somebody’s house is insane to me. It is that good!

The Final Verdict

If it’s Friday and you are looking for a fish fix, do yourself a favour and go to Chick-Fil-A. Hell, go try this any day of the week (except Sundays of course) as it is highly recommended to try for only $4-$5. Just make sure you ask for tartar sauce if that’s your thing, as it does not seem like the default option.

Tully’s (Cheektowaga) - 3/20/20

So, as of this time, the residents of NY State were on an “almost” full lockdown. Only those defined as essential employees were permitted to go to work. Most places were able to administer work from home. However, many restaurants were still open for take out and delivery. The thought of skipping this week crossed our minds, however, many restaurants advertised on their FaceBook pages and social media, that they were open and that they could not express the gratitude for those supporting them at this time. And so, we called up a few places, one was out of fish, the other never answered. Eventually, we did get through to Tully’s on French road who took our order for 1 fish fry and 1 order of tenders, which would take an hour to pick up. When I arrived, I could see why it took that long, as it seemed like 2-3 people were running the show and everywhere was getting bombarded for orders. Kudos to those guys, they are the real heroes! So, given all of the circumstances I am going to keep this review light, but also fair and honest to the best of my ability.

Price - $12.99

So, what I have been noticing a lot lately is many of these places is that they are offering their version of “fish and chips”. It is something easy to carry on the menu all year long, since fish fries only seem to be big a few weeks out of the year anyway. You do not get as much variety here compared to other places charging the same price, but given the theme and level of this restaurant, this is “entree price”. A

Presentation

Tully’s is a sports bar kind of on the same tier as an AppleBee’s or TGIF, but if it was way better and local only to NY. At least that is how I would describe the setup to a non-local. And so, it is a place you would traditionally hang out before or an after an event, so takeout seems less common. I have dined in here more than I have taken out, but that number is slowly catching up. And what I love about their take out is that they use these cool cardboard boxes where they put a styrofoam container on the bottom so it does not soak through, but they leave the top open so that it let’s enough of the moisture out to keep everything crisp, which by the looks you can see that it appears that way. Not much else to say aside from it just looking sort of plain jane. Just a lot of “tan yellowness” and not much else to look at due to the lack of sides.

Taste

Fish

The fish was lightly breaded, and had a great taste. Every bite had a tang to it, even without being provided the lemon. You got 2 decent sized pieces too, which was nice. Not much else to say about this. It was a solid tasting piece of fish.

Sides

The Fries: The sides on this fish fry were pretty lacking because this seems to be more of the traditional “fish and chips”, but I thought being a place more quaint with this part of WNY, they would add some extra bonus sides just for Lent, kind of like Wellington Pub. But instead, they seemed to try and make up for the lack of sides, with extra fries. Which, they are super tasty and crunchy, but it does leave a bit t be desired as there is no diversity of flavors.

The Coleslaw: ...non-existent... but I will not hold that against them. (They were busy with a very short staff.) But the menu does state that it comes with a side of their coleslaw, which I thought was in the little plastic container, but that was actually the tartar sauce (more on that after this). I have had the coleslaw multiple times in the past and I can say it is really good, very wet compared to a lot of the ones I have been seeing lately. My only real complaint with the coleslaw is the portion size. I think the upcharge for coleslaw on a tender dinner is like $2 and change, and you literally get one of those 2oz plastic containers of it. Even dining in it is like a spoonful and a half.

The Tartar: As you can see from the picture, I whipped up my own tartar on the side because I thought that was the coleslaw, but it was a good thing I did! The tartar tasted like straight mayo with a zang of lemon sitting on the top. Now I will admit, I am one of those “monsters” who licks the mayonnaise spoon before throwing it in the sink, but this was... just not good.

The Final Verdict - 5

Given all of the circumstances, I do not feel like I can judge this very accurately, and would like to try it again. I do not feel that it deserves to be at the bottom of the list, but maybe at the tail-end of the middle category. Overall what I will say is that this is not really a “fish fry”, this is “fish and chips” (to me). To be a fish fry, you really have to have those additional sides to add some variety to the flavours going on. But, if you hate mac salad, and don’t care much for potato salad, I would recommend getting this dish in a pinch. It was really good, but upon eating it, I did not feel the same level of satisfaction as past weeks.

Week 3 Update

Throughout this adventure, now on its 5th year, we have visited about 27 different locations (when you include the few that have unfortunately closed). 

I believe it was only midway through our 2nd year when we discovered that when you have too much of a good thing, it becomes increasingly more difficult to compare them to each other.

And so, we came up with the idea of colour coding these restaurants, as to say, hey, these guys are equally as good. Sometimes, a place was just definitively better than the rest. However, I can say that most of the time, it was just way too hard to say that one place was better than other, and to decide whether to put it above or below one another and we also did not want to give “tied positions”. So, I believe this may be the best solution for all.

Green being the Top 10, the dark of course is the coveted Top 5 positions, with the lighter green filling out the rest of those top spots. These being the hands-down best places that I can say I would recommend to anyone who may be looking to have a unique Fish Fry Adventure of their own.

Yellow (Tumblr did not have yellow, so we’ll just use purple), will probably be the most common position honestly, I do not want to call them “the middle” because I believe they are more than that. These are all great places that I would honestly love to visit again. It’s a shame they cannot be in the Top 10, but we cannot all be winners right? So, anything in yellow is something I would take into account if you are trying to have a really good fish fry and maybe want to avoid the crowds, or avoid wasting a trip, as a lot of places in the Top 10, are places that will sell out of fish occasionally during this time. 

Orange, are pretty good fish fries, probably nothing I would go out of my way to get again. As you can tell, most of them are pizzerias, and many people in Buffalo get their fish fries from pizzerias, which is not a big deal. For the price and convenience, it is the best solution for your Lenten fix. I mean you can throw a rock in any direction and no matter what part of WNY you are in, you will probably hit a pizza place that sells their own fish fry. I just feel that with that styrofoam container comes a sogginess and taste to the overall product, that simply will not compare when you put it up against a place that brings it straight from the kitchen to your table.

Red... filling out the bottom of the list are the far and few that just simply were not that great. I would definitely love to give these places redemption shots, because I do not want to neglect a possibly good recommendation due to one bad experience. That being said, I will definitely save redemptions for after Lent, as per my first posting in this blog, we can see how that turned out, and I do not want to waste another opportunity like that again.

Polish Villa I (Cheektowaga) - 3/13/20

Despite all that was going on around us at the time of this posting, I am afraid that The Show Must Go On! Actually, it was encouraged to wash our hands, get out there, spread some BuffaLOVE (from a distance), avoid any unnecessary contact and EAT! Support your local community! These restaurants and their employees depend on us as consumers to make a livelihood and it was our duty to support them if we possessed the means to do so safely. 

Price - $12.95

$13 seems to be the standard from what we have seen so far. I believe if you catch this fish before 2PM it is only $8.95 as a lunch special (but don’t quote me on that). My picture does not do this fish justice, it was a bad angle, but that piece of fish was as big as the plate! Overall, for the number of sides that were included and the size of the fish I would say this was worth the money. A+

Presentation

I like that the sides came out on there own plate, the salads in cute little scoops and the coleslaw separated in its own container for all you coleslaw haters out there... You know who you are. Now, the portions may seem small, but it was just enough of what you needed I promise! The huge filet of fish was crisp, steam exteriorating from the golden crust, and there was no aroma of fishiness which tells you that this was a fresh catch.

Another great looking fish! This time I opted for the breaded, just to change it up a bit, as I have done beer battered the past 2 weeks now. Some may scoff at the idea and say it is not fair to compare apples to oranges, or in this case, battered to breaded... but let’s be real, it is the same fish underneath the crust. Now, despite the look, I felt like the overall taste left a bit to be desired. The seasoning a little weak on the outside, but still good. I just think as fresh and moist as the actual fish was, that taste was just not there. It was almost as if I was just eating a texture, if that makes any sense, kind of like eating a plain piece of tofu I guess. Maybe if I had an extra lemon wedge or added ketchup, I could have done it a little justice, but overall it was just a little under par compared to what I have had thus far. Good Fish, not Great Fish.

Sides

The Salads: The mac and potato salads were both equally as great. I felt no need to add any extra salt or pepper to either, which is a win in my book. Both had an obvious taste of being homemade just from the first bite. I love a good onion in my salad, and these had this little after-bite of that, which just takes you to a different place, a summer picnic if you will.

The Coleslaw: This was actually my least favourite coleslaw... at least out of the fish fries I have had so far this year. It was just a little too dry, and felt like I was just eating straight shredded cabbage. Now don’t get me wrong, some people might like that, but I am pretty sure the cabbage part, is why most people hate coleslaw in the first place!

The Potato: Now, I think this is the first fish fry we seen (this year) where potato salad was already included, and you got an extra potato on top of that without adding it on. So, the theme of this year seems to be trying out everybody’s German Potato Salad, when it is available. At first bite, it was pretty good, nice vinegary touch, not too sour. But, as I kept eating, the better it got, and I can solidly say, it was one of the better Germans I have had, it might even put up a fight with that of the Happy Swallow, but I would have to give both a try again.

The Fries: So, from the picture, you can see that my plate did not contain fries, but don’t worry... they were there! Just off camera, stage right. Since the theme of this year has been getting that Bonus Potato Salad, the common practice has been to try fries from someone else’s plate. I see no harm or foul in that! And I can say, I wish I had gotten my own order of these fries, as they were delicious! They were golden brown and crisp, just as the fish. They reminded me a lot of what Wellington’s fries wanted to be, but they were not soggy. WIN!

The Rye: Last but not least, which is ironic, because this was the first thing that came to our table, was the rye bread and butter. The bread was a lovely shade of brown, nice and soft and the butter it came with was whipped, both better for application and taste. Great way to start or end your meal!

The Final Verdict - 6

For $13 I do not think you can go wrong with this Fish Fry. The amount of great tasting sides alone may make this worth the trip. Despite the fish itself being a little lacking this time around, I can definitely say this would be a place I would take friends or family to give it a second try. 

*Side Note

This location does not serve alcohol, which is a bit of a bummer. One of the best things about a fish fry is pairing it with a nice cold brew. However, that is not something I would hold against them, but I would like to just put out there for anybody thinking of visiting, this will be a sober adventure!

Four Corners Cafe (Eden) - 3/6/20

Price - $13.99 - $14.99

The regular beer battered was $14, but I opted the extra dollar for their Buffalo style. Again, pretty standard for the amount of food you are getting and I don’t think anybody was leaving without a full belly! A+

Presentation

Love, LOVE, LOVE! the colour of the fish here. You can just taste how crispy the outside was with your eyes. The fish came lying gently on a blanket full of fries, as most traditional fish fries do. The salads were off to the side in rather cute and neat little scoops, with the coleslaw on the side. Apologies for the messy table (my fault), but if you neglect that, this is a very appetizing fish fry. If I seen this on my FaceBook feed, I would definitely be inquiring as to its whereabouts. 

Taste

As you can tell just by the looks, the fish was crisp and decadent. The Buffalo seasoning was subtle, not overpowering as the colour may allude. Overall it was fresh and juicy. Solid Fish!

Sides

The coleslaw reminded me a lot of a KFC style coleslaw, which I will argue to the grave is some of the Best Coleslaw on the Market!! It also came by itself on the side in a good sized portion which is nice, as coleslaw seems to be the most substituted or deserted side. 

Return of the Mac! This place had mac salad, which is pretty essential to a great fish fry, but is often not included as we have seen in many of our previous endeavors. The mac salad itself was pretty solid, definitely not store-bought, so some extra points there!

For the potato, I had both the American potato salad, as well as the fries. The salad was pretty solid also, it was mustard based, which was a nice break from the mayo considering that is the basis for most coleslaw and macaroni salads. The fries were your typical diner fries you would get anywhere, but when paired with the side of wing sauce how could you even care?! And what are fries, but a vehicle for great sauces!

BONUS POTATO! We did also try the German potato salad, a controversial side when it comes to fish fries because they typically include bacon. However, if you don’t observe Lent or you go some other time of year, I would definitely recommend getting this potato salad! Wunderbar!

The cornbread... The cornbread may have been the Bread Winner of this entire meal. I said it in the last review, and will definitely say it in the future, “Rye bread is a staple of any true Lenten Fish Fry”. That being said... I would take this corn bread over rye bread any day. It definitely brought something extra to the table that left a lasting impact on the meal.

The Final Verdict - 6.5

If you’re in this part of town and it’s a Friday, definitely make it a priority to stop here, OR even if you don’t, make the trip! For the price and the amount of solid food you are getting, it is definitely worth it to check out at least once. And make sure you save room for a slice of one of their homemade pies or cheesecakes, you won’t be sorry! And don’t forget to leave your server a nice tip, they are the best! And they work really hard.

*Note - For this post and all future posts of similar nature, we are not including places that are closed. It wouldn’t really help to recommend somewhere that you can’t go to (haha).

Parker’s Proper Fish & Chips had to be categorized as “closed” as well due to them closing the South Park location and moving to Wheatfield. What I have read is that they were “closed to the public”, but on their website it looks like you can still get the fish and chips shipped to you. Not sure how that all works, so they are getting a permanent asterisk.

Also, after some discussion Elma Towne Grill was moved up a couple spots on the list. A couple places we did last year did not get a proper stage for debate. But, the list is always subject to change, as we try to keep the top 10 as accurate as possible for recommending purposes.

Wellington Pub (Buffalo) - 2/28/20

Price - $12.99

Not much to say on this. $13 is pretty standard for a Fry in WNY. I can say that we all left full and satisfied. A+

Presentation

The fish had a great colour, same with the coleslaw. The “potato salad” was a bit sloppy, but at least everything was separated, aside from the lemon wedge that is... wedged in between the salads (hahaha). Traditionally, a Fish Fry here in Buffalo is everything piled high on top of each other, just thrown into a styrofoam box. I am sure however, that there are a lot of people that would appreciate the separation. 

Taste

The problem with beer battered fish is that sometimes it is too “airy” and bland. But this fish was far from that. This fish was sweet and juicy. The way it flaked apart was almost picturesque (sorry for the lack of picture). The addition of that little squeeze of lemon gave it that little push it needed to send it from “great fish territory” to “amazing fish territory”.

Sides

The coleslaw was rich and creamy, and it did not taste like it came from a plastic container.

For the potato, you had to choose between your choice of potato salad or french fries. Sucks they did not offer both, however, I did try the fries from someone else’s plate and they were nothing special. The “potato salad” if you could call it that, was definitely something I would recommend. It was more like a loaded mashed potato, so yes, it did contain bacon, which defeats the purpose of a Lenten fish fry, but this is more of a British “fish and chips” vibe. It is something they offer all year round, so we cannot count against them for the bacon! I also want to say “points!” to our server for mentioning that the salad contained bacon before we ordered it.

Rye bread is a staple of any true Lenten Fish Fry in Buffalo. You can see by the picture, that there was not any included with our plating. I believe this is because it is not something they traditionally include on an ordinary day, however, they did bring rye bread and additional rolls to the table immediately after. I thought this was a really great touch.

The Final Verdict - 7.5

For the price you are paying, and the quality of food you are receiving, I would definitely recommend stopping by the Wellington Pub for a Fish Fry, not only during Lent, but all year round. I am torn between giving this a 7 or an 8. It was an amazing experience, but there were several stops from previous years that I do not believe Wellington has topped.

World of Beer (Cheektowaga) - 2/26/20

You may be wondering right now, “was there an error loading the picture on this page? I don’t see anything!” But you would be correct in thinking that, because THERE IS NOTHING TO SEE!

We thought we would start the 2020 Season of Lent on a high note by knocking out 2 birds with 1 stone on Ash Wednesday. We were going to get a fish fry, and engage in some trivia activities at the World of Beer.

This is the 5th year that we have embarked on this several week long adventure, and in the past there were spots that we have repeated because they were just that good! However, this year we wanted to try something a little bit different. We wanted to give some of the spots on the bottom of our list a chance at redemption. World of Beer being at the very bottom of our list since year one, we were told by a few sources that our judgement was “far from accurate”.

Excited for second chances and trivia, we arrived to our destination before the rush. The restaurant was pretty dead for an Ash Wednesday in Western New York, but that is because the crowds were likely flocking to many of the popular places (such as those on our current list). Gooood! Gooood! This was all a part of our plan, but that is the thing with plans, they do not always go accordingly. And that is exactly what happened. Plan fail!

I do not want to knock the service because that is not the purpose of this blog, (that’s what Yelp is for). However, I will say, it was one piece of bad news after another. We missed the happy hour pricing on our beers by a few minutes due to waiting to put our orders in. After another 20 or so minutes of patiently waiting we found that our appetizers were given to another table. And finally, the pièce de résistance, the icing on our cake of bad news, the finishing blow to our good start of the 2020 Season of Lent... THEY WERE OUT OF FISH!!!! I just want to ask, how have you been open in Western New York for several years, and you are not prepared for this situation? You know the drill! 

I do also want to note, to add insult to injury, they sprinkled in “Ash Wednesday tidbits” into the trivia... oooof!

World of Beer is a great place to meet up with co-workers or friends for a quick bite to eat. Located within the mall makes it super convenient, but you also get hit with those “mall prices”. The beer is vast and unique, but pretty overpriced in my opinion. If you want to taste some unique flavors of beer you have never had, I suggest going to a local beer festival such as the Ballpark Brew Bash or Buffalo on Tap. All of that said, I would return to World of Beer to give their fish fry a second... third try?? I will definitely go when Lent is over and do an updated review.
