HOW TO CAST A CIRCLE
This video shows how to cast a circle in the Wiccan practice. In a future video I will go over how to Lay a Compass, which is a traditional witchcraft version of creating sacred space.
What is a Magic Circle? - A magic circle is an energetic construct that you create or envision around yourself before working magic, doing a ritual, or sometimes even meditating. - For a single magic worker or solitary witch, it’s usually around 5 or 6 feet in diameter, but the size expands based on the size of a group. - Sometimes, the circle is defined by something in the physical world, such as a ring of candles or scarves, or perhaps just symbolic items at the four cardinal points.
What is the purpose of a Magic Circle? - It separates the mundane space from a sacred space. Churches/temples are already a sacred space. - It serves as a container for your personal energy as well as the energy you conjure. - It provides protection. You cast it with the intention that only positive energies may enter or dwell within. This way, when you open yourself up to the energetic realm, you need not worry about picking up any unwanted energies or currents.
How to Cast a Magic Circle? - Find a flat, somewhat open space – indoors or out – where you won’t be disturbed. - Find the four cardinal directions using a compass (there is probably one on your smart phone). OPTIONAL: Place a simple representation of each of the four elements at each corresponding point around an imagined circle. Earth/north, Air/east, Fire/south, Water/west. - Go to the center of the circle for a moment to take a couple deep breaths and calm your mind. - Turn toward East, pause and say, “I call the Guardian of East and the element of Air to watch over this sacred circle.” Then go clockwise to South for fire, West for Water, and end at North for Air. Another, simpler option is to start at the east and walk clockwise in a circle three times while you envision the creation of a circle. - When done go to the center and raise arms up and down to form your circle into a more dimensional bubble.
How to Release a Circle - When you are ready, stand up, facing East and say, “Thank you, Guardian, go in peace and love.” Face the North, West, and finally South, saying the same words. - When you are back at East, point your finger or wand to the floor and slowly walk widdershins (anti-clockwise), imagining the circle dissolving and fading as you go.
