Roger Steffensā Exclusive, Unseen Marley Portraits
The first ever billboard for Bob Marley and the Wailers, promoting Rastaman Vibration and their appearance at the Shrine Auditorium. Photo by Roger Steffens. Seen here on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Artwork designed by Neville Garrick. One of the earliest large-scale outdoor promotions for Marley in the United States marked the moment reggae broke into the American mainstream.
In this clip, reggae historian Roger Steffens shares an incredible story about how reggae records and cassette tapes carrying messages of support for Nelson Mandela were secretly sent to Robben Island during his imprisonment.
Reggae has always been more than music. It has been a voice for freedom and justice around the world.
Itās a reminder of how the sound of Jamaica reached even the darkest places

Here's a shot from Saturday at a YouTube party for Fela Kuti to celebrate his Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. I am with his archivist, daughter, and in the center, Femi Kuti. I was able to donate 56 years of Fela clippings and memorabilia to the Kuti Museum in Lagos. In the Verse party facility, they created a room filled with artifacts from my record and magazine collections, including about a dozen autographed album covers.
We had a photo session with Roger Steffens today to create the poster.
An intimate shoot inside the archives, surrounded by decades of history, stories, and music. Not everyone is visible in the photos, but it was very much a collective moment.
Special crew on the day: Ronnie Monahan, Pedro Colo, Erik Crown, Paul Madelenat, and Tshombe Sampson.
Special Thanks to Marty Dread. Sorry for interrupting your meeting with Roger and Mary to make this happen. Much Respect!
More to come.
