A little late but I hope you enjoy your gift @vinzul!!! I hope u had a great time in Christmas and happy holidays!!
@lwasanta thank u for one more year of this and happy holidays to you too!!!
hi i just read your e!gem post (same anon) and yeah. e!gem is such a fantastic character 💜💚 i don't have much to say that you practically touched all the points as to why gem's pov and her character in empires felt so special to me 🏔
but now i'm interested in your traffic!gem thoughts, because she's also one of my favorite blorbos to think about; on one hand she's really difficult to crack because a lot of things don't really seem to face her (at least after secret life) and she like, barely creates attachment to material things. on the other hand, her relationship with pearl does help to know gem as a character better because of how uniquely they treat each other (both in sl and wl).
i definitely think she tries to put a facade of "i don't heavily care about death or anything because this is all a game" while also constantly bringing back secret life, almost like that season and what happened (end portal, eye taken 'against her will', a camel and the weight of leadership she never desired) haunts her to some degree that she won't ever admit outloud. some things she brings back are certainly remembered with fondness (her saving that camel during ep6 and then making sure it stayed safe in the barn... you could tell she missed pearl) and others are not (she does not like sacrifices after sl).
the idea that a celestial being, who had been boundless all her life and held control over every aspect of her existence, now keeps coming back to the games because she wants to recuperate what, for the first time in all her life, she lost during sl (her agency? control? freedom?) is an interpretation i'm a fan of rn, but ofc there's so many other things you can delve into (i could rant way more about how she actually is her own biggest enemy and that ties into her trying to not care too much about people and stuff after sl but it’s kinda late lol).
as for fic recs, i definitely recommend this series from dustaundonut (https://archiveofourown.org/series/2796937) basically a canon divergence that explores a reality where corrupted!gem isn't cured, roseblings are really nuanced and complex, shinyduo is shinyduo, and the world is still moving forward. updates for the main fic are slow, but it’s still soooo worth it for the great narrative. one of my faves ever
(also i do think someone should put all gem variants in one room and see which one comes out of the room as a better person and which leaves wanting to commit more crimes)
Hey !! Thank you for all of this !! I’m so proud of my Empires 1 Gem analysis, glad you enjoyed and extra happy you want to hear more :)
I'll do my best.
Traffic Gem’s theme is control. She is constantly fighting to maintain it, to get it back, to pretend she has it, while the whole world makes it their mission to take it from her. She’s a trophy, threat, leader, lover, and at the end of the day: she is and has lost. The tragedy of Gem is her inability to fulfill her full potential, how her situation leaves her no option but to resign, giving a glimpse into what could have been if she was allowed. And the triumph of Gem is when she rejects that, spins things around so her only option is committing, delighting not in the spoils but in the hunt.
Gem is wonderfully difficult to pick apart, with Traffic!Gem as the worst offender -- most of my #analysis were posted during WL trying to figure her out. But the fun is in discovering another aspect/layer that completely changes an interpretation. All to say: this isn't my first crack at Traffic Gem, and it certainly won't be the last. Written mostly in January, I was gonna wait till I had a companion fic to post with this (stay tuned 👀) but Simple Life April Fools spelled soooo much out, I can't resist posting now. Enough disclaimers, let’s get into the great Gem analysis!
Traffic Gem, willingly or not, is the villain of everyone's story. Even her own.
furiously takes notes…i love the fact that you added the context of gems world hopper lore to add onto the overall development and tie together an entire narrative. i think incorporating aspects of fandom lore that aren’t technically canon but kind of toying with the idea of them as canon compliant because there’s at least implications if nothing else is always so fun and especially works with gem because she seems genuinely more intimidating touch with fandom lore and analysis than most other life series members that aren’t named martyn inthelittlewood.
i hadn’t even considered how deep the layers of the villain reputation go or even anything beyond how the reputation and betrayal aspects of secret life complicated her relationships with everything she loved (burned her out on the idea of being defined by pvp, made her relationships with the people in her extremely tight bubble such as etho and skizz seem that much more intimidating because if pearl isn’t sacred then what is, etc etc) so these takes were SO interesting and eye opening
i think it’s extremely easy to take gem at face value because she often seems like she’s playing a very simple role at first glance. in the life series especially she seems like she’s ALWAYS frustrated or exasperated and it kind of comes across as this “straight man archetype” kind of characterizarion that makes her seem like she’s simply playing into being the sane/competent one in the group at any given moment but the reality is her frustrations are genuine and borne out of a sense of helplessness in her own narrative. like of course she’s annoyed. it’s not particularly about everyone around her being chaotic or incompetent and her wanting to react to that - she’s happy to have that kind of banter with pearl because their dynamic is fluid and pearl is attentive to the dynamic gem is trying to create - but the constant flocking of people towards her is ACTUALLY frustrating. they often don’t want to build strong connections OR rivalries, they aren’t crafting a narrative with her. they’re just taking up her space, resources, and especially in the case of red lives refusing to go on the offense because they’re busy pestering her so she can’t even wait the game out without intervening. and she can’t even be sure that she’s getting anything out of it either, because her reputation makes people fear/target her even when she’s been kind to them. so yeah, traffic gem is extremely grumpy and frustrated to me. she has fun in her rare moments of autonomy but the consistent helplessness in the face of both the nature of the game and nearly every other player working against the narrative she’s trying to craft is a constant barrier
YES !! YOU GET ME !! ALL OF THIS !! Prepare for MORE ANALYSIS !!
Fandom lore is very buffet style for me where ideas are fun to sample, mix and match, and discard. Gem in particular is so interesting to spin around cause she hits lore moments without them feeling clunky or interrupting general flow — you can ignore and obsess over them as you please. Unlike Martyn, she likes (and is very good at) referencing her and other player's popular lore without trapping them — in varying degrees of subtlety. From quick one-liners, long pauses, an array of very intentional "sure" — 's, to entire conversations acknowledging character parallels or discussing long-running bits. There's always the option to dismiss it, because her slipping it in is entertainment enough.
(And of course she uses it for evil /pos. Saw a post once about her and Pearl being young enough to fangirl over OTPs and understand online fandom intimately and I’ve never been the same. Talk about nods for the fans: “Etho and BDubs make a baby” her whole career led up to that moment. Let's not even get into how expertly she handles her own pairings.)
"Burned out on PVP defining her" is the best way I've seen that idea put. There's so many factors, positive and negative and neither, that compress creators into boxes they don't wanna be in. And it's doubled for female CC's. I didn't say this explicitly enough in the main analysis, but as much fun/entertainment as villainy is, Gem's rightfully uncomfortable with having no other options. You can kinda see it in how she talks about cottagecore where she still loves it but also wants to build (and be known for) other things — the Dredge base has been good for that. Anyway, clearly I have a lot more to rant about for how deep the villain reputation cuts. For SL specifically I think she chose to lean into it, but was burned badly enough to start twisting it around in WL.
Gosh where do I even start with the "straight man" attitude. You're completely right about the source: lack of autonomy to change things herself and no personal agency in how other players treat her. I can add on with how she executes it. Gem maintains very intentional boundaries with other players for how they can interact with her: both they and the audience know who she's close with, how, why, and the criteria to change that. While every CC does this in varying degrees, Grian is most similar in how explicit the lines are drawn, which is part of why they get along so well. They're never inaccessible, that defeats the entire business model, but they only give certain reactions until they're back in their comfort zone. Grian is a mischievous ringleader, saving the important beats in his emotional / long running plots for close friends, just as Gem performs her competent cottagecore "straight man" role until challenged or subverted.
This dynamic is sort of an NPC-ification for other players. Since every MCYT is trying to tell individual stories in a collaborative space, they rely on each CC's stereotype to proceed cohesively. When a curse needs breaking, they seek out Wizard Gem for a magical artifact. And when they need to pester a resilient target, they hunt down Traffic Gem for a challenge. This isn't a bad thing! In fact, it's often a useful tool for both players to approach improv scenarios, nevermind supplementing audience understanding. As described in the main analysis, Gem uses her role to tell more interesting stories about expectations and contradiction. CC's get their role by adapting to their reputations (leftover from previous/ongoing roles) and the situation (the setting and players in it.) Villain Gem was cool in SL! The negatives come when that role doesn't give her narrative freedom in return, and she's left performing NPC plot device duties without room to tell her own story.
All of this deserves it's own post really, but I have one last layer to discuss: Gem's character isn't in isolation. She's able to count on comfort players to break through with more interesting story hooks. In particular Scott does interesting things with playing into their surface-level NPC narratives while actually keeping Gem on her toes, while Joel does the opposite in complex small interactions they both don't have to think about executing. With Gem, Scar seems consistently knocked off-balance (rare for him) and by contrast Pearl is fully in her element — messing with Gem. As trapped as she often is, Gem crafts incredibly entertaining narratives within that box, rewarded from her work in other roles and relationships. Just imagine what she could do unrestricted.
Thanks for the RB!! Love hearing your thoughts.

DuckTales 2017 comic
GIRLS!!! I've been thinking about their post timeskip designs lately. Not sure if it's a final result but I like it a lot
I love to imagine that adult Lena is very thin and looking a lot like Magica. Guess she accepted her relative to auntie and probably enjoy it (just cuz she can scare kids with her gothic-like style)
Adult Webby didn't change much. The fact that she grew can't stop her from being positive and enthusiastic. Oh and she swapped her bow with the headband or just put the bow on the different place
Della's hairstyle has been taken from the dt17 concept art I found on Pinterest. Mb she would love the same haircut Penny has
