Videodrome (1983)

In January 2018, a 17-year-old girl escaped from her family by leaping out of a bedroom window of her small stucco home located in the working-class city of Perris, CA, and called 911 using a cellphone she grabbed from her home. In a calm manner, she identified herself as Jordan Turpin and described the years of abuse that she and her dozen siblings endured. She explained that they were never allowed to go outside, and that they lived in absolute filth due to the fact that they were only allowed up to one shower a year. They lived imprisoned and bound by shackles their whole lives, sleeping in their own waste.

The teenager led police to her family home, which appeared like any other typical Californian home on the exterior. On the inside, however, they walked into the extremely disturbing living conditions of the remaining twelve siblings, ranging from ages 2-29, all bound to their beds by chains and padlocks. About half of them were adults in their late teens or twenties, though they were all mistaken as minors due to their childlike appearances. The siblings were very clearly malnourished, the eldest sibling weighing a measly 82 pounds, and many had cognitive deficiencies due to the lifelong abuse they suffered. Their parents, identified as David, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, were immediately arrested and slapped with many charges ranging from torture and abuse of children and adults to lewd acts on children below the age of 14. After the news broke out, more gut-wrenching details began unraveling about the horrors that transpired within the Turpin home, which would no later be dubbed ‘’The House of Horrors’’.

The children were forced to sleep during the day and stay up all night. Their parents kept them isolated from the outside world and never let them play with toys. They were generally only given one meal a day, which consisted of bologna or peanut butter sandwiches. The children were physically punished if they dared to steal food or access the internet. One of the siblings was strangled by their mother for sneaking onto the internet to watch a YouTube video of Justin Bieber. Six of the minor children who placed in foster care. The remaining adult children are now in assisted living.

David and Louise were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Some of the children issued their own statements at the sentencing hearing. revealing they were still haunted by the abuse but had forgiven their parents. One of them, now in college, had stated, ‘’My parents took my whole life from me, but now I’m taking my life back.’’ She added that the abuse made her strong and described herself as a fighter.

Body Recovered From Ohio's Scioto River Identified as Missing Social Justice Advocate, Amber Evans

The body of a young woman recovered from the Scioto River in Ohio on Saturday has been identified as 28-year-old community activist Amber Evans by Columbus Police. She had been missing since Jan. 28.

Evans was a well-known community activist in the city, working with a variety of social justice organizations.

Since 2015, she had worked with Juvenile Justice Coalition; she was promoted to executive director weeks before her disappearance.

Evans played a key role in organizing protests at Columbus City Hall; she was also “heavily involved” with the People’s Justice Project, a nonprofit dedicated to organizing working people and people of color across Columbus.

She was reported missing in late January, following a domestic dispute with her boyfriend of 10 years, police say. Amber went to work the morning of Jan. 28; she left following a 5:30 p.m. meeting after telling her coworkers she wasn’t feeling well. She was last seen in security footage at a local store, where she bought cold medicine and a Snickers bar.

Police found Evans’ abandoned car later that evening in the Scioto Mile area in Downtown Columbus with her purse in the trunk; her phone was found on another part of the Scioto Mile the next day.

Two days before Evans went missing, Fischer said she spoke with her daughter on the phone about her plans for the next 20 years.

“I said, ‘Amber, tell me what your life is going to be — your 30 and 40-year-old life — and how that looks for you.’” Fischer said, recounting the conversation for NBC News’ “Dateline.”

She says her daughter told her, “Mom, I want to go back to Paris and teach the children English again.” Evans had worked and studied in the French capital; Fischer said it was the happiest her daughter had been.

It was the last conversation she would have with her daughter.

National social justice network “Showing Up for Racial Justice” released a statement Sunday responding to the news of Evans’ death. Excerpts of the statement were published by Columbus’ local ABC affiliate.

“Anyone who knew Amber knows that she was extremely disciplined and dedicated to struggling for a better world,” wrote lead organizer Tynan Krakoff. “She treated everyone with dignity and when you spoke, it always felt like she truly was listening. She was a fighter and we will continue her legacy.”

Candace Newmaker was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, on November 19, 1989. She was removed from her parents’ care due to negligence by social services. At the age of five, she was adopted by a pediatric nurse practitioner named Jeane Elizabeth Newmaker. Within months, however, Candace was acting very violently at home. As the years went on, her behavior only worsened. It is believed Candace was suffering from reactive attachment disorder. In a desperate attempt to control her daughter’s behavior, Jeane took Candance to the unofficial home of attachment therapists in Evergreen, Colorado, where she was to endure two weeks of intensive sessions of attachment therapy with Connell Watkins and Julie Ponder.

In an intense three-hour session, they attempted to re-enact a birthing scene by wrapping the young girl in a sheet to simulate a womb. The purpose was to help her bond with her adoptive mother. Four adults applied their weight on Candace’s tiny frame so she couldn’t free herself. Candace screamed and pleaded for air, and had even stated she was dying. One of the therapist shouted, ‘’You want to die? OK, then die. Go ahead, die right now.’’ Only twenty minutes into the session, Candace vomited and defecated, but she was forced to remain wrapped in the sheet. Finally Candace was asked if she wanted to be reborn, and she weakly replied, ‘’No’’. This would be her last word she would ever utter. The therapists began calling her a ‘’quitter’’ over and over again. The therapists then forced everyone to leave. When they unwrapped the blanket, they found Candace motionless. Connell Watkins said, ‘’Oh, there she is sleeping in her vomit.’’ Her lips and fingertips were blue and she wasn’t breathing. Jeane then rushed in and attempted to perform CPR on her adoptive daughter. When the paramedics arrived, they determined the little girl was unconscious and probably hadn’t been breathing for quite some time. She was rushed to the hospital and was declared brain dead the following day.

All adults involved in Candace’s death were charged and convicted of child abuse. In honor of the tragedy of Candace Newmaker, ‘’Candace’s Law’ was passed which outlaws rebirthing as a treatment in the state of Colorado.
